India Coronavirus Cases Cross 49-Lakh Mark, Deaths Cross 80,000

Coronavirus Updates: India's COVID-19 case tally stands at 49,30,236 with a spike of 83,809 new cases and 1,054 deaths in last 24 hours, data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shows.



New Delhi: With 83,809 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus tally has crossed the 49 lakh mark. The pandemic claimed 1,054 lives in the last 24 hours taking India's total death count past the 80,000 mark. The country now has 9.90 lakh active cases and a total 38.59 lakh patients in the country have recovered from COVID-19. Maharashtra remains the worst affected state by the pandemic, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Worldwide, almost 3 crore people have been infected by Sars-CoV-2, and more than 9.23 lakh people have lost their lives to the pandemic since it surfaced in China late last year.

At 83,809, the new coronavirus cases reported in the last 24 hours are the fewest India has reported in the week when its daily cases were about 90,000.

India, which has been reporting the highest number of new cases in the world since August, tested more than 10.7 lakh samples in the last 24 hours, data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) shows.

With India now the epicenter of the pandemic, the Monsoon session of the Parliament started on Monday and 25 MPs - 17 members of the Lok Sabha and eight from the Rajya Sabha - tested positive in the mandatory tests carried out, sources said.

Among the infected Lok Sabha MPs, the BJP has a maximum number -- 12. The YSR Congress has two MPs, the Shiv Sena, DMK and RLP one each.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has been leading the national capital's fight against the coronavirus pandemic, also tested positive for the virus on Monday. The leader confirmed his infection in a tweet and said he was in self-isolation to prevent transmission of the illness.

As overall cases dipped marginally today, states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha recorded their highest every daily spike in coronavirus cases yet.

However, the country continues to have the highest number of coronavirus recoveries in the world with a recovery rate of 77.99 per cent. On Monday, India overtook Brazil to have the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries globally, data from the US-based John Hopkins University showed.

Globally, there are more than 2.89 crore COVID-19 cases, with 9.32 lakh deaths.

The United States has the most deaths with 1.94 lakh, followed by Brazil with 1.31 lakh, India 80,521, Mexico 70,821 and Britain 41,628.

The World Health Organization reported a record one-day increase in global coronavirus cases on Sunday, with the total rising by 307,930 in 24 hours. It expects Europe to see a rise in the daily number of Covid-19 deaths in October and November after a sharp rise in recent weeks.
