GATE applicants up, but success rate down

HYDERABAD: While the State rejoices over bagging the top rank of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year, the decline in the pass percentage indicates the poor quality of engineering education being offered.
There is a surge in the number of applicants this year for the GATE across streams but the success rate has come down sharply. For example 1.7 lakh candidates appeared in the computer science stream this year compared to 42,383 last year but only 11,000 odd qualified with the cut-off percentile increasing by four per cent. Last year the cut-off percentile was 86.88 while it is 89.46 this year.
Similarly, 1.4 lakh candidates appeared in Electronics and Communication stream compared to 42,943 last year but only 11,000 odd qualified. The aspirants increased considerably in Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical too, but the success rate is not encouraging. GATE scores are considered for entry into post-graduate engineering courses with assured scholarships. Moreover, some companies also prefer GATE scores.
The sharp decline in the passes is being attributed to poor quality of education offered in engineering colleges apart from introduction of analytical questions. This year verbal aptitude and quantitative aptitude of 15 marks have been introduced and this could have had an effect on the success rate. "This shows how our students are not prepared or trained. It reflects how they lack in core subject knowledge and also analytical skills," says K. Ramalinga Reddy, HoD of ETM Department at G. Narayanamma Institute of Technological Sciences.
Recession and few job offers in the industry are said to be the reasons students opting for GATE this year.
Most of these students would have opted for higher education abroad but with student loans hard to come by and not so good employment reports in the US they preferred to take GATE and get into post-graduate courses in India itself.
