Thousands of alumni of IIT Madras to get together

CHENNAI: Thousands of alumni of IIT Madras are expected to participate in the institute's 'Golden Jubilee Alumni Day' on December 26. The institute, which is set to complete 50 years, is joining hands with three alumni associations to make the event 'a blast to celebrate the past, present and future'.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday, R. Nagarajan, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Advisor, Office of Alumni Affairs, IIT Madras, said that this is the first time that such a large gathering of alumni across batches and branches is being planned.

"We normally have alumni meetings by batches. Over the decades, 32,000 students have passed out of the institute. A donor wall of fame will be unveiled in the evening on that day at the SAC Auditorium," he said.

Among the other programmes planned are a quiz on the history of IIT-M, State of the Institute – a presentation about the institute by its Director and Deans, and a State of the Alumni Association – about the alumni activities, he added. For details, call 22578390 or mail oaa@iitm.ac.in
Incubation Initiative launched

At another function held on Friday, IIT-M Director M.S. Ananth underlined the need for encouraging micro and small enterprises. Launching an MSME incubation initiative of the institute, he said that the micro sector was important as it generated much more employment. Poor cash flow was a major problem faced by the micro sector.

The initiative has been set up with the assistance of Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

It would provide initial funding and momentum to the students and faculty members of the institute to support innovations that have a strong potential for being developed as successful business.

IC and SR Dean Job Kurien, Department of Management Studies Head, C. Rajendran, Assistant Professor Thillai Rajan and Cell for Technology Innovation, Development and Entrepreneurship Support Professor in-charge L.S. Ganesh spoke.
