Standard VIII students to be taken on exposure visit

Nagercoil: The government plans to conduct a three-day exposure visit for 3,270 students of 8th standard in the State under Sarva Sikshya Abiyan in January and February.

Speaking to The Hindu, P. Periyaswamy, Additional Chief Educational Officer, said here that the SSA and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation would jointly organise the programme meant for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minority communities. The students will be accompanied by 326 teachers.

The students would be taken to historic and cultural important places, besides places known for scenic beauty in different parts of the State. Hundred-and-four students from Kanyakumari district would participate in the programme.

In the first phase, students from 17 districts — Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tiruchi, Karur, Namakkal, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni and The Nilgiris — would be taken to Chennai and Kanchipuram districts.

In the second phase, students from Coimbatore, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem and Tiruvallur districts would be taken to Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts.

In the third phase students from Chennai, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Perambalur would be taken to Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai districts.

R. Venkatesan, State Project Director (SSA), has directed the district coordinators to select 25 percent boys and 75 percent girls, besides best students from schools where 'activity-based learning' method was being taught.
