According to the study conducted by the researchers at MIT and Caltech, global warming can trigger more floods as well as heavier rainstorms in future.

Previously, the studies have shown that, the average annual rainfall in the tropics and temperate zones will witness a surge whereas it will dip in the subtropical parts.

The researchers, Paul O'Gorman from Department of Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences at MIT and Tapio Schneider, professor of environmental science and engineering at Caltech were conducting research on frequency and magnitude of intense precipitation. They found that, this extreme precipitation can cause frequent floods and soil erosion.

According to the scientists, the model simulations technique, they used, can increase up to 6% for each degree rise in temperature.

It has been predicted that, unless we change the policy on global climate change, the global surface warming may surge up in a range of 5.2 degrees Celsius by 2100.

Richard Allan, a senior research fellow at the Environmental Systems Science Centre at Reading University in Britain, lauded Paul O'Gorman's effort and said, "O'Gorman's analysis is an important step in understanding the physical basis for future increases in the most intense rainfall projected by climate models."

According to Allan, as the air heats up, so it holds more water vapour, which causes the rise in precipitation extremes.
