The Punjab Agricultural University today released the status report of monsoon in Punjab together with impact of drought on Punjab agriculture. The report shows that many districts of Punjab received good rains with rainfall distribution for last five weeks indicating that during June 1 to August 5 Ludhiana and Kapurthala had excess rain (20 per cent or more), Jalandhar, Sangrur, Ropar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur had normal rainfall while Patiala, Bathinda, Moga and Faridkot received deficient rains.

Musktasar, Ferozepur, Fatehgarh Sahib and Amritsar had a scanty rainfall. The conventional meaning of drought in terms of its impact on agricultural productivity and production does not apply to Punjab state, as 97 per cent of its crop area is under assured irrigation throughout the year, PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Manjit Singh Kang said.

Similarly, there was no adverse impact on the productivity of all the crops, said the experts.
