Sometimes when we take some extra time with our computer, we look at our hard drive and we believe that we have plenty of room to store and install a lot of things yet. Suddenly, we see that the space has decreased significantly without an apparent reason. This problem is more common than we think and in many cases it is difficult to know where "extra space" in our hard disk storage is.

If this happens to you, there are some things we can do to try to recover the disk space that we think we are lacking. Many times this occurs because we have installed or saved same files twice, often simply by double copy and paste. Many people think that you can defragment your hard disk to get the required free space, but the truth is it does not really released anything, but reorganizes the information to access data more efficiently.

We can never avoid it: sometimes, when we are saving files, we do not pay attention to where we end up saving them. We just go on and continue working and saving every once in a while, and then after we are done, we turn off our computers and leave. There is no perceived problem until you come back, sit at your computer, and decide to access the last file you saved. Fortunately, for some computers, they are built with certain features that can recall the last path in which a file was saved. However, this feature does not exist in all computers.

And so, you go ahead and spend precious time locating the file you wanted to open. There are two ways you can do it: by using specialized software that locates files, or by doing the traditional manual search wherein you go through all your folders and sub-folders. The latter option could work but generally, using specialized software to find files is much easier, less tedious, and faster.

An example of software that locates files and documents is the Duplicate Finder 2009. Duplicate Finder 2009 can search documents in your drives and can give you the locations and paths within seconds. Not only it can find your files, it can also identify certain files that are saved in duplicates. Of course, there may be instances where files are intentionally saved in multiple locations. However, majority of the occurrence of duplicates saved in more than one location is by accident.
