OU students get unique ID number

A unique identification number being introduced from this year by the Osmania University can trace the student's roll number, course, college, year of study and the zone under which the college falls. The 12-digit number will also work as the hall-ticket number of the particular student for the examination purpose and is being given to all the graduate and post-graduate students.

The first digit denotes the district code followed by three digits allocated to the particular college. The next two digits will indicate the year of joining while the following three digits reflect course code. The last three digits will be allocated to the roll number given to each candidate. A combination of all these digits will be the hall-ticket number of each student, which means the same number can be never be repeated for any other student.

For example, if a student is studying in Hyderabad (1) in AV College (053) this year (09) in BA International Studies and Foreign Languages (001) and he gets the roll number 1 (001), his identification number would be 1-503-09-001-001.

"This method allows officials to easily trace the student's history in the university," says S.L. Goud, Director, Central Facilities, Osmania University. The existing eight digit code system is followed separately for UG and PG courses and it doesn't indicate the college and course. "The UGC is now seeking precise information on the strength district wise also. The new system will make identification easy," he says. The University offers nearly 700 courses in 1,000-odd affiliated colleges and the strength of students runs into nearly five lakhs. "For such a massive strength this unique number will make administration more convenient," says C. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Director of Academic Audit. He said each stream of study is put in a different band. Like the Arts group subjects are in 001 to 091 band, social sciences 111 to 363, commerce 401 to 419, technology 801 to 823 and likewise. Roll number allocation will also indicate the section and the medium. Numbers from 001 to 500 are allocated for English medium, 501 to 800 for Telugu medium, 801 to 900 for Hindi medium and 901 to 999 for Urdu medium.
