English teachers asked not to compromise on quality

Shimoga: Dean of English Language Studies, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, G. Rajagopal on Satuday called upon English teachers not to compromise on their professional excellence at any cost.

He was speaking as a chief guest at the one-day workshop for English language teachers organised here under the aegis of the Department of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in English, Kuvempu University, Orient Blackswan Publishers, Hyderabad and Acharya Tulsi National College of Commerce.

He said that English teachers should have preparedness over the requirements of modern times. He said that developing proficiency in the language and adopting professional qualities were major needs to become a successful teacher in English.

Mr. Rajagopal observed that teachers would face challenges while teaching English language in modern times. The outlook, objectives and approach in teaching had changed a lot, he added.

He remarked that nowadays English language teachers at colleges seemed to be allergic to useful workshops. He said that participating in such workshops would help teachers to pull up their socks and gain expertise in the language.

He suggested to the Kuvempu Univeristy Vice-Chancellor B.S. Sherigara to send students of English to the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad to pursue one-year diploma course in English Language Teaching (ELT) which would help them gain more proficiency in English language.

Prof. Sherigara who inaugurated the workshop accepted the suggestion made by Mr. Rajagopal and said that he would visit the varsity soon to make an agreement between the two institutions with regard to training students in English language teaching.

He also said that the university was thinking of introducing courses to facilitate learning of foreign languages.

Expressing his views over the importance of English language, the Vice-Chancellor said that in the present scenario there were many challenges for English language teachers. He said that the teachers should face the challenges boldly and excel in their profession to meet the present-day requirements.

Prof. Sherigara said that English teachers should upgrade their knowledge about the developments in language studies.

Over 60 English teachers participated in the workshop.
