60,000 file IT returns at special counters on last day

Bangalore: There was a fair turnout on the last day of filing of income tax returns on Friday, with the special counters to receive annual tax returns from salaried persons and pensioners at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore receiving as many as 60,000 of them, compared to last year's figure of one lakh.

The department attributes this to the special counters that operated for two weeks this year. Last year, they operated for a week, said K.P. Prasad, Commissioner of Income Tax (Salaries and Pensions Range), Bangalore.

About 3.8 lakh IT returns were received at these counters ever since they were set up on July 16.

The facilities drew plaudits from the tax-payers who voiced their appreciation both at the counters as well as on blogs.

"Many tax payers have created blogs on the Internet which received thousands of comments appreciating the facilities. Blogs like "Mango Man — An Aam Admi" posted views of young tax payers who submitted their return at the special counters," Mr. Prasad said.

Mr. Prasad said that the operation of special counter at a spacious location with free parking facility made the tax payers to submit their returns without hassle and the Department will try to improve the system the next year.
