D.Ed. college teachers seek pay hike

Bangalore: Members of the Karnataka State D.Ed. College Employees' Association began a relay fast on Tuesday to pressure the State Government to fulfil their long-pending demands.

Association vice-president L. Satish said a major demand was the increase in basic pay. In 1999, the National Council for Teachers' Education made it mandatory for lecturers of D.Ed. colleges to have minimum qualification of M.Sc./ M.A. and M.Ed. "Our basic is now almost same as that of high school teachers though our qualification is much higher than theirs."

He said that the D.Ed. college teachers' salaries should be increased to match that of degree college teachers. "We have submitted memorandums in this regard several times over the past 10 years. Recently, we met the Chief Minister and the Minister for Higher Education and brought our plight to their notice. Though they promised us relief, our demands have not been met," he said.

Around 80 D.Ed. college teachers from different parts of the State are participating in the relay fast.
