Teachers asked to keep pace with changing education scenario

ERODE: Responsibility on the shoulders of a teacher has increased as education is undergoing a tremendous change, T. Padmanaban, vice- chancellor, Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education University, has said.

Transformation
Delivering the graduation day address at Maharaja College for Women and Maharaja College of Education in Perundurai near here, he said, "Change has become the order of the day; changes in society, its setting and values as well as transformation in culture have their impact on an individual. Education has to keep pace with such a change. And, this puts enormous responsibility on the shoulders of a teacher."

"Education in the twenty-first century has become more complex than before. The simple process of educating the young, developing their cognitive skills, psychomotor abilities has become difficult."

"Now education should be learner-centric and keep pace with rapid developments in society," he said.
Multiple roles

He further said, "Need and importance of a teacher education in this context is important as a teacher has to perform multiple activities like teaching, evaluating, communicating, guiding and counselling students, organising co-curricular activities, participating in community programmes, etc. This needs excellence in academic and professional preparation of teachers."
Investment

Mr. Padmanaban also said that education was no longer a welfare activity but an investment in the future. "Investment in higher education is an investment in future, as higher education institutions have a great responsibility in providing opportunities to the members of society for intellectual exploration, showcasing their creativity and experimenting new ideas."

For the Country to be a knowledge superpower, he said the following were required: learner-oriented syllabi, not examination-oriented; global education, not national; education for all, learner-centric education, not teacher-centric; quality institutions with accreditation, etc.

Medals
He then presented medals and certificates to 42 rank holders.
