Anna univ team inquires into student's death

Chennai: An inquiry team headed by Anna University (Chennai) vice chancellor P Mannar Jawahar visited the St Joseph's College of Engineering in suburban Chennai on Wednesday to get an account of the prevailing atmosphere on the campus following the suicide of a first year student on Monday.

The inquiry team – also comprising registrar S Shanmugavel and students' affairs director S Ganesan – which went to the college around noon, questioned its director Babu Manoharan, principal

Jolly Abraham and manager Selvaraj. They inspected the hostel room where I Vivek had ended his life following disciplinary action for malpractice in examination.
"We interacted with around 50 hostellers and randomly conducted inquiries with 40 day scholars. It appeared that the students were under a fear psychosis due to the disciplinary measures. We will finalise our report by Thursday," the vice chancellor told The Times of India.

College director Babu Manoharan assured to look into the students' complaints. "Discipline can always be tailor made to suit the students' needs," he told TOI.
