Districts steal a march over city in class X exams

Chennai: There was little cheer for students of Chennai schools on Saturday when results of the State Board standard X examinations were released, as candidates from schools in small towns and tier-II cities cornered most of the top ranks.

The overall pass percentage was higher in three streams this year.

The top ranks in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, the Matriculation Board Examination and the Anglo-Indian School Leaving Certificate (AISLC) Examination were all bagged by students from schools outside Chennai, with an exception each in the matriculation and Anglo-Indian streams.

N L Dhinesh of Zion Matriculation School, Selaiyur, secured the state second rank with an aggregate score of 489 out of 500. Likewise, V Jey Varshini of Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in T Nagar shared the third slot with three other students in the AISLC, having scored 483 marks.

The picture was in complete contrast to 2008, when nearly half a dozen students brought laurels to the city.

This year, M P Jose Rijan of St Mary Goretty Higher Secondary School in Thuckalay in Kanyakumari district secured the state first rank in SSLC, scoring 496 marks. While the second rank was shared by five students from Tirunelveli, Madurai, Gobichettipalayam, Namakkal and Pattukottai; three students from Aruppukottai, Palani and Karur were tied in the third slot.

A Bala Priya Darshini of Thoothukudi topped the matriculation examination with a score of 490 among students who had studied Tamil, while M Gautam of Madurai was the topper in the non-Tamil category with a score of 492.

In the AISLC examination, L Caroline Silvia of St Joseph's Anglo Indian School in Tiruchi emerged the state topper with 486 marks. While two students shared the second rank, four were tied in the third slot.
