76.46% pass in Higher Secondary exam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A total of 76.46 per cent of school-going students passed the Higher Secondary examination for 2008-09, the results of which were announced here by Education Minister M.A. Baby on Tuesday.

The pass percentage shows a decline of 4.59 points over the previous year. The success rate among school-going students last year was 81.05 per cent.

In the Open School category, 39.61 per cent of the students won eligibility for higher education.

In all, 4,02,034 students wrote the higher secondary examinations this year. Of them, 2,61,419 were in the school-going category and 88,739 in the Open School category. As many as 49,108 students took the examinations in 'compartments,' which means they wrote the examinations for the specific subjects in which they had failed. And 2,768 students wrote the examinations under the old scheme.

In the school-going category, the pass percentage is 75.18 in the science group; 79.03 in the humanities group; 77.11 in the commerce group; 73.63 in the technical group; and 72.46 per cent in the arts group. In the Open School category, the pass percentage is 22.93 in the science group; 44.59 in the humanities group; and 37.34 in the commerce group.

Mr. Baby said 25 schools secured 100 per cent pass, two of them aided schools, 20 unaided schools and three special schools. As many as 1,415 students scored 'A+' grade in all subjects. Of them, 278 are from government schools, 918 from aided schools, 195 from unaided schools and 24 from technical schools. 'A+' in all subjects was most in the science group, with 1,163 students winning the grade. Thirty-two students in the humanities group, 195 in the commerce group and 25 in the technical group also received 'A+' in all subjects.

VHSE results
The Education Minister also announced the results of the vocational higher secondary examinations held in March. Of the 24,762 school-going students who took the examinations, 22,937 (92.63 per cent) won eligibility for certificates in part one and part two. As many as 19,528 (78.86 per cent) students are eligible to pursue higher studies.
