Acer's Android Phone Expected by Year-end

Acer, the world's third largest computer maker, has made its intentions clear with its plans to enter the highly competitive mobile phones segment. While the company had joined the Open Handset Alliance last year, it had not announced when we could expect the first Android based devices from their stables.

Last month, there were rumors that Acer's A1 was expected to be launched sometime in September 2009. Now again, we have some more news coming in from Acer about their new Android phone. This one, however, as Acer's head of mobile phone products Aymar de Lencquesaing puts it, is coming "by the end of the year". At this time we're unsure if we're still talking about the A1 or if the A1 does exist at all.

What exists however is the Windows Mobile line-up from Acer that was first seen at the Mobile World Congress back in February. Back then, they had announced four new Windows Mobile based phones. It remains to be seen if the new Android phone will be based on one of these devices. Or is it that Acer wants the new phone to be an exceptional one and is taking its own time to develop? Only time will tell.
