Tamil University signs pact with adheenam trust

SIVAGANGA: Tamil University in Thanjavur has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kundrakudi Thiruvannamalai Adheenam Trust, recognising the later as a Centre for Research in Education.

M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor and Shri Ponnambala Adigalar signed the memorandum at a function held at the Thavathiru Kundrakudi Adigalar College of Education, Kundrakudi, near here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rajendran said that the Adheenam Trust would offer full-time and part-time Ph.D. and M.Phil. courses on education based on rules and regulations of the university. It would approach finding agencies in the the State and Central-level for pursuing research projects. It would also undertake research projects with the Department of Education of Tamil University.

The university would launch a 'Tamil Ula' programme from the next academic year (2009-2010). Professors, Tamil scholars and students would be taken to famous temples, which were referred in the ancient books such as Thevaram on second Saturday of every month. They would stay for at least a day in each temple and study the functioning and historic aspects of it. This would be helpful to revive the glory of the temples and ancient Tamil works.

Stating that the Trust was one of the very few organisations in the country to receive the status of centre for research, the Adigalar said that it would play a leading role in producing devoted research scholars. Though the country was marching forward in all spheres of life, the importance given to research was abysmally low. The vacuum had to be filled so that development could be accelerated.

S. Mohan, Secretary, Adigalar College of Education, said that the research centre would focus on cognitive development, biological inputs, environmental inputs, neuro psychology and plasticity.

R.K. Sundararajan, Principal and K. Balakrishnan, advisor, spoke.
