Bank's education loans on the rise

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi circle of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) witnessed a growth of about 125 per cent in sanctioning education loans, the Circle Head of the bank, S. M. Veerappan, said.

Speaking at the Foundation Day celebrations of the bank here on Wednesday, Mr. Veerappan said that the bank's branches in Tiruchi circle sanctioned education loans to 2,666 beneficiaries during last year compared to 1,186 sanctioned the previous year.

He said that the bank had given special emphasis for the growth of agriculture where number of beneficiaries increased by 30 per cent (from 24,000 to 31,000).

PNB Vidyarthi account, specially designed for students, found wide acceptance. Students above the age of 10 could open the account with zero balance.

The Director, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T), M. Chidambaram, who was the chief guest, expressed the hope that the bank would continue to contribute to nation building.
