753 TCE students get placement

MADURAI: The campus recruitment at Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) here was strong and encouraging for academic year 2008-09 despite the recession.

According to a placement report prepared for the year, 33 companies had visited the TCE campus and recruited 753 students. The recruitment details were presented during the 'Placement Day' function held in the college on April 3.

Of the several top companies that recruited suitable candidates, the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) alone has recruited 301 students for the, according to G. K. Rajesh, Placement Officer of the college.

The highest salary offered was Rs.13.6 lakhs per annum by Amada and the average annual salary for the placed students was Rs.3.15 lakhs.

K. Ganesan, vice-president (HR), TCS, Karumuttu T. Kannan, college Correspondent and V. Abhaikumar, Principal, congratulated the students who were successful in campus placement.

"Despite the recession, companies are hiring students of engineering colleges and the TCE stood among the top three institutions in the State in terms of placement," Mr. Rajesh said in his report.

The companies that recruited include TCS, Cognizant, iGate, Keane, Syntel and IBM. Besides, core companies like Motorola, Honeywell, TVS Motors, L&T, Amada (Japan), HCL, Dalmia Cements, Renault Nissan, Titan, TAFE and Vedanta also recruited the students of TCE. "This is the second consecutive year that TCS had recruited more than 300 students," the Placement Officer said. In the undergraduate courses, 479 students got placement.

According to the report, the total placement percentage for UG courses was 90.27 per cent while it was 85.7 per cent for MCA students and 40.94 for postgraduate students. The college authorities said that efforts to find suitable placement are being taken for students of all engineering branches.
