Educational loan only for poor, meritorious

MADURAI: Students who can afford to pay tuition fees and had obtained average marks in their qualifying examinations cannot compel banks to disburse educational loans, the Madras High Court has ruled.

Dismissing a writ petition filed by an aeronautical engineering student in the Madurai Bench of the court, Justice S. Manikumar said: "The beneficial scheme should reach the poor and meritorious students."

The Judge said the petitioner could not claim grant of loan as a matter of right when he had scored only 70 per cent marks in the qualifying examinations and his parents together were earning over Rs.30,000 every month.

"If that is permitted, then the whole object of the scheme will be defeated," he opined.
