Millions of users use the Internet to share their photos with friends and family spread across the world, something you couldn't easily do even a few years ago. It is one of the most popular activities on the Net. Many leading web sites have developed simple software tools with which it is easy even for a lay person to set up an online photo album and share it with others. Best of all, the service is mostly free.

Where: Yahoo's Flickr (www.flickr.com) is probably the most popular site of this kind.
Over 2,000 photos are uploaded on Flickr every single minute. Photobucket (www.photobucket.com), Zooomr (www.zooomr.com), Fotki (http://www.fotki.com) and Google's Picasa (www.picasaweb) are others worth mention.

How: First, create an account by filling in personal details and sign in to the hosting site.
Using simple upload forms, you can transfer photos stored in your computer, one at a time.

Once you have uploaded all the photos — a process than can take several minutes depending on the size of your photos and the speed of your Internet connection — you can organise and share them.
You can set permissions by naming people who can view them and make sure unwanted or unknown people don't see them. You are guided through this process through simple forms/buttons. You may also choose to leave the images as 'public', which means anyone can view your albums.

Choices: Most sites offer a free 'basic' service, which will limit the number of images you can store. Usually this limit is based on the size of the images, or the amount of space it requires on a server. For example, Flickr allows 100 MB (megabytes) free space but some Fotki offers 1 GB (gigabyte), ten times more.

Also, 'premium (or pro)' service for which you need to pay. Premium services typically offer 'unlimited' uploads. For most users, the basic service should suffice.
