IIM to be set up in Chennai

PALANI: An Indian Institute of Management (IIM) will be established in Chennai. Other six IIMs will be set up in other parts of the country, said D. Purandareshwari, Minister of State for Human Resources Development.

Talking to reporters during her visit to the temple town here on Friday, she said that massive efforts were on develop higher education. Central government has plans to set up seven IIMs in the county. Besides Tamil Nadu, Shillong, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Chhattisgarh will have one each.

Indian Institutes of Technology will be established in eight places and National Institutes of Technology in 20 places in the country.

However, the minister ruled out new Indian Institute of Technology for Chennai as it already has one such institute. Top priority has been given to new state that did not have such premier institutions, she added.

Ms. Purandareshwari visited Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy hill temple to have dharshan. Later, she left for Coimbatore.
