Biggies line up for 2009 tamil movies

Kollywood, ushers in the New Year with many exciting releases of big banners and stars in the offing. Here is a sneak preview in to what we could expect in the year 2009:

Villu: January will witness the first biggie of the year. Villu starring Ilaya thalapathy Vijay and Nayantara, directed by Prabhudeva, is among the most awaited film of the first quarter. Vijay is heavily banking on this film to come back to winning streak after two flops in Azhagiya Tamizh Magan and Kuruvi. Nayanthara too had a bad year with her Aegan, Kuselan and Sathyam bombed at the box office. The Movie is all set to hit the halls on the eve of Ponga, just as the blockbuster Pokkiri did in 2007. 

Naan kadavul: Director Bala, who is known for distinctive movies, is ready with Naan Kadavul starring Arya and Pooja. After taking more than a year and a half, the director has finally completed the project, which is said to be potentially an award winning movie. The grapevine has it that Arya plays a cannibal in the movie.

Ayan: The next big movie of the year will be Surya - Thamannah starer Ayan, directed by K.V. Anand. After winning critical acclaim in Vaaranam Aayiram, Surya is gearing up for a movie, which is a light hearted romantic movie, which has ample dosage of action. Surya is said to have done some breath taking stunts.

Aayirathil Oruvan: Selvaraghavan, another director with the reputation of taking a long time to finish a project is nearing the completion of his forthcoming movie Aayirathil Oruvan, which has been in the making for more than a year. This will be Paruthi Veeran Karthi's second movie in which Reema Sen and Andrea play the female lead roles. The movie has gained more significance after the split between Selva's lucky mascot Yuvan Sahnkarraja. Now Selva has roped in G.V. Prakashkumar to score the music.

Kanthasamy: After the forgettable experience of Bheema, Vikram is working in SUsi Ganesan's mega project Kanthasamy, produced by Kalaipuli Dhanu. Vikram dons six different get ups, including that of a woman. The movie is said to have a super man like story. The hot gal Shriya Saran is there to add glamour quotient of the movie, which is expected to ht the halls on May 1.

Ashokavanam (working title): ace director Mani Ratnam is busy shooting his direct Tamil film, five years after Ayutha Ezhuthu. He has roped in Vikram, Aishwarya, Prithviraj and Priyamani in the movie, which is said to be Mani's interpretation of the epic Ramayan. The trilingual movie (Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi) has music by Mani's favorite music director A.R. Rahman. The director is planning to bring out the movie by June.

Sultan the warrior: An indigenous 3D animation film starring Rajinikanth has been produced and directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth. The movie which has all the ingredients of commercial cinema is expected to be released worldwide during summer with 3,500 prints (the highest in the history of Indian cinema).

Endhiran - the mother of all biggies: Director K. SHankar's Endhiran, the most awaited movie of 2009, is undoubtedly the biggest ever to be made in Tamil with a whooping budget of Rs. 150 crore. The movie has become bigger with Sun Pictures has taken over the production rights of the movie. The Rajinikanth - Aishwarya rai Bachchan starrer is gearing up for the year end release.   

Thalaivan Irukkinraan: After the successful Dasavatharam, kamal Haasan was about to commence a mega project titled Marmayogi. The mega budget film (Rs 120 crore) has been postponed for wanting of funds, thanks to the global economic slowdown. Kamal Haasan has decided to go for a quickie in Thalaivan Irukkinraan, which is said to be a full fledged comedy film.

Apart from these movies, we have Padikkaathavan (Dhanush - Thamannah), Arumugam (Bharath - Priyamani), Paiyaa (Karthi - Thamannah), Sarvam (Arya - Trisha), Peranmai (Jayam Ravi), Aadhavan (Surya - Nayantara), and Ajith's untitled movie. There are also some movies, which are anticipated with eager because of the director. Nandalala by Misskyn and Angadi Theru by Vasantha Balan are two such movies.

With all these movies, 2009 has the potential to be more exciting than 2008.

10 Films to look out for in 2009

This year is going to be crucial for the Tamil film industry. Almost all the big stars have made it clear that they will have a release this year. Here is a list of the 10 most eagerly awaited films...


Endhiran
Cast: Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai
Director: Shankar music: A R Rahman
Rajinikanth and Shankar are coming together again in this science fiction movie considered to be a mass entertainer. The movie is said to be the costliest film ever being made in India with Hollywood technicians.

Naan Kadavul
Director: Bala
Music: Ilayaraja.
The film slated to be Bala's magnum opus, has taken nearly two years to complete. Many believe that it is to be Arya's ticket to stardom as Bala has the reputation of giving big breaks to his artistes.

Kandasaamy
Cast: Vikram, Shreya
Director: Susi Ganesan
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Tamil cinema's first super hero film is all about the idea that size does matter. It is going to be an out and-out fantasy film with Vikram and Shreya in a glamorous role.

Aayirathil oruvan

Cast: Parthiban, Karthik, Reema Sen, Andrea
Director: Selvaraghavan
Music: G V Prakash
The film is the first-of-its-kind in the genre of action-adventure-fantasy and has been in the making for the last 18 months. Selva has opted for the state-of-the-art special effects and graphics in this big-budget entertainer, which according to sources costs around Rs 20 crores.

Sultan — the warrior
Cast: Rajinikanth, Vijayalakshmi.
Director: Soundarya Rajinikanth
Music: AR Rahman
It is a bold and daring experiment carried out by Soundarya Rajinikanth and her ocher studios, as she is making a full length animation film with her dad, Rajinikanth playing the central character.

Villu
Cast: Vijay, Nayantara, Prakash raj, Vadivel
Director: Prabhu Deva
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
The movie is expected to be a complete mass entertainer. Vijay is a one-man army when it comes to providing comedy, romance, action and dance. Vijay is being paired opposite Nayantara for the first time and his favourite director Prabhu Deva is in charge. Their last film together Pokkiri was a big hit and fans are expecting a lot from this film too.

Asokavanam
Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, And Prabhu, Priyamani
Director: Mani Ratnam
Music: AR Rahman
Mani Ratnam is making this film as a trilingual in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. The film is said to be a version of modern day Ramayana.

Ayan
Cast: Surya, Tamanna and Aakashdeep Saigal
Director: KV Anand
Music: Harris Jayaram
The movie has a brand new pair with a director who is all the more innovative. The movie will show Tamanna doing her first glamorous role, while Surya will showcase his six-pack abs.

Goa
Cast: Premji, Vaibhav, And Aravind and jai
Director: Venkat Prabhu
Music: Yuan Shankar raja.
Venkat Prabhu through his last two films, has established that he can do films with lesser known actors. The director is on the lookout for a Hollywood actress to play the female lead in the film. Today, the director is a brand who has an audience for his kind of films.

Padikkathavan
Cast: Dhanush, Tamannaa, Atul Gulkarni and Vivek
Director: Sooraj
Music: Mani Sharma
Dhanush is working his way up with light- hearted entertainers. It is an all-new team and the director is known for his films laced with comedy. There will not be a dull moment in this slapstick, action comedy.
