Legal education has not got adequate attention

MADURAI: The recent clash between students of two communities on the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College campus in Chennai has brought to light the lack of attention to legal education in Tamil Nadu, Supreme Court Judge A.K. Ganguly said on Monday.

"Actually what happened was an outburst of things that were happening for a very long period of time. I am sorry to say legal education in the State has not received the attention it should have from the appropriate quarters," he said, speaking at a function organised by a Bar Association to felicitate him on his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Clarifying that his intention was not to blame anyone, Mr. Ganguly said, "But that incident was an eye-opener. It actually brought to the surface the situation going on in the college, which required a lot of improvement."

Mr. Ganguly was the Chief Justice of Madras High Court when the violence took place on November 12.
