TIRUCHI: With assistance of Indian Welding Society (IWS) and BHEL Small and Medium Industries Association (BHELSIA), National College here has introduced a diploma course in fabrication engineering for its students.

The college signed a memorandum of understanding with the IWS and BHELSIA, under the industry-institute collaboration programme on Monday. Principal K. Anbarasu exchanged documents with the IWS, president, Southern region and Managing Director, G.B. Engineering Enterprise Private Ltd, B. Pattabhiraman and BHELSIA president K.G. Muralidharan, in the presence of the College secretary K. Raghunathan, and the National Secretary of IWS N. Rajasekaran.

The programme of 240 hours duration is to be offered for second year under graduate students pursuing humanities and science streams in the college. The students would be given practical exposure at the fabrication units in the district.

The syllabus has been devised by the IWS and the BHELSIA and the classes would be held after regular classes.

Terming the diploma programme as a novel initiative, Dr. Anbarasu said it had been introduced as Tiruchi was the hub of fabrication units. According to Mr. Pattabhiraman, there was a dearth of welders today.

V. Gopalakrishnan, former executive director, BHEL, Tiruchi said skill enhancement would ensure employment to students. Mr. Muralidharan said that the units had to scale up their activities phenomenally.
