30 students to take part in national-level science exhibition

SHIMOGA: Jyoti Hirekumbi of Hooli High School in Savadatti taluk of Belgaum district won the Young Scientist Award at the 16th State-level National Children's Science Meet which concluded here on Monday.

She won the award for her model on the "Role of microorganisms in increasing fertility of soil" exhibited at the meet organised at the Adichunchangiri School.

She received a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 while her school library got Rs. 4,000 and her teacher got Rs. 1,000. Apart from this award, Jyoti also bagged Dr. S.G. Nagalotimath Award for securing the first place in the rural senior category at the exhibition.

Kavya of Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district won the first prize in the rural junior category, K. Usha of Manipal PU College in Udupi district bagged the first prize in the urban senior category and M. Pranav of B.M. Shri. Primary School of Mysore bagged the first prize in the urban junior category.

As many as 30 students who exhibited their projects under the four categories will represent Karnataka at the National Science Exhibition to be held in Nagaland from December 27 to 30.

The students who will represent the State at the national-level exhibition (category-wise) are as follows:

Rural senior: Jyoti Hirekumbi of Savadatti taluk (Belgaum); Akshata of Basavana Bagewadi (Bijapur district); Pooja Hegde of Bhairumbe (Sirsi taluk, Uttara Kannada district); N. Mahalakshmi of Ponnasandra (Pavgada taluk, Tumkur district); Nagaral Devappa (Raichur); C. Vasanthi (Bhadravati, Shimoga district); Sheela (Tumkur); Sujan Dinesh (Davangere) and Mallikarjun Kardi (Gadag).

Rural junior: Kavya (Uppinangady); P.S. Pavitra (Bangalore); Geetha (Savadatti taluk); Tanuja Bhogle (Negalur); Ravikumar Madanbhovi (Tegur); and Pooja Bhat (Bisgodu).

Urban senior: K. Usha (Manipal); Sankalpa A. (Dharwad), Ashwini Bhat (Sirsi), Trupthi S. Kotari (Gadag); S.J. Sanjana (Gulbarga); Kruttika T. (Belgaum); Vidya S.G. (Bagalkot); N.S. Nagesh (Bangalore); and Divya Shekhar (Sirsi).

Urban junior: M. Pranav (Mysore), Divyashri Mishra (Sedam, Gulbarga district); Nitish N. Hegde (Gokak, Belgaum district); D. Manasa (Davangere), Shweta Maganur (Bagalkot); and Santosh Banakar (Hubli).

Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara, who gave away prizes to the winners, emphasised the need for engaging children in practical training so that their creativity could get a fillip.

Secretary of the National Education Society S.V. Thimmaiah released the souvenir, "Vasundhare", on the occasion.

President of the City Municipal Council (CMC) M. Shankar presided over the function. Prasannanath Swamiji of the local branch of the Adichunchanagiri Math and Deputy Director of Public Instruction S.L. Chauvan were among those present.
