TUTICORIN: A team from Catholic Junior College, Singapore, has arrived here on a week-long programme on developing teaching methodology with the adoption of innovative modules of delivering lectures and sharing culture at La Salle Higher Secondary School.

Aaron Rajoo, a teacher specialising in activity-based teaching of English, told The Hindu that learning had two components — teaching on the part of speaker and listening on the part of receiver.

Teaching subjects in chalk-and-talk mode always puts the students in a state of boredom. The process should be executed in a play way method that would help even slow learners to gain confidence, he said. Yang Yun Hui, other faculty member, said that the objective of the programme was to impart new forms of learning techniques. The students were taught through activities rather than monotonous way of memorising things, she said.

Teaching should be balanced with a blend of interaction and inculcation, she said. Teaching aids included charts and cards of sudoku, puzzles, poems and stories with illustrations and game plan activities, she added.

Artistic creativity could not be taught but it was in conformity with the sense of thinking, she added.

A graphic calculator was used to explain mathematical concepts. Video clips were shown to express the real life applications of mathematics, which aroused the curiosity of students. Lessons on ecology and food chain were involved to gauge the commitment of students.

R. Antony, Headmaster and correspondent, La Salle Higher Secondary School, said the programme was arranged for 160 students of standards VI, VII and VIII.
