Residential schools lack infrastructure

BERHAMPUR: The residential Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalays for girls in Ganjam district lack basic infrastructure in a major way.

These schools are managed by the Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan to promote education among the poor and dalits. The long standing problems and lackings of these schools came to the for discussion during a meeting of the headmasters of these schools held at district headquarter, Chatrapur. This meeting was also attended by the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Rasbehari Gochhayat and district welfare officer, B.B.Sahu. The headmasters prepared a list of their problems and handed it over to the district Collector for necessary action.

There are 12 Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalays in the district. It was alleged that no doctor was coming for regular health check up of the students of the school at Chhchina in Beguniapada block. There were no Sanskrit and Hindi teachers at the school at Rikapalli. Lack of teachers, toilets, classrooms and drinking water supply was major complaint of these schools.

Medical check-up
Lack of medical check up along with lack of toilets and water supply was the problem of the school at Ramchandrapur. Similar was the problem of Mundamarei school. The school at Palibandha was still running in a cyclone shelter without any infrastructure of its own. The headmasters of many schools like the one at Bhabarada alleged that their students had to go out at nature's call.

No boundary wall
Many schools like the one at Pathara did not have proper boundary wall around them to provide secure atmosphere to the students.

The headmasters urged the CDMO to make arrangements so that their students could be checked up regularly to save them from infections. The CDMO promised to depute doctors posted in Teharea to make a visit to the schools at least once in a fortnight for check up of the students. Similarly the district welfare officer also promised to build up proper number of toilets at these schools under sanitary mission project.
