How do I Edit WMV Files?

Use Editing Software to Edit WMV Files

In order to edit WMV files, you will need to use special editing software. Most editing software's are not free and can cost from $20 to several hundred dollars for professional tools. However, one software product that is powerful, employs lots of features and is free is Movica. Movica is an editing application that can easily make edits to WMV files, it has a graphic user interface making it extremely easy and intuitive to use.

Install and Launch Your Editing Software

As stated above, for this article we will use a simple program called Movica. Once installed on your computer, you can launch the program.

Open a File to Edit

With this software, you can launch the program and then choose the Open option from the top toolbar. This will allow you to view all files that the software supports including WMV files. You should see a thumbnail of your WMV file. Once it is located double click the file.

Select Scenes to Edit by Playing the File

The easiest way to start the editing process is to select the part of the file to edit. This can be done easily within Movica by playing the file. You can use the simple play, forward, reverse, pause and stop buttons at the top to easily locate the part of the file to edit. In addition, you also can use the set a starting point button and set an ending point button to easily narrow down your selection.

Start the Editing Process

There are many types of editing that you can do including, extending a scene, cutting out a scene, disjointing a scene, etc. However, with Movica and other types of editing software, you can easily find information within the software on how to create your specific effect or edit.

Proof the Edit

Once an edit is complete, you will want to do a dry run or "proof it" to make sure that the edit was created correctly. Proofing the edit usually only requires you to play the edit back using the software. If the edit is not satisfactory, you can return to editing it and proof it again and again, constantly tweaking the edit until it is perfect for your use.

Finalize the Edit

Once the edit has been proofed and you are completely satisfied with it, you can finalize it. Finalizing means that you incorporate the edit into the file and formally save it. However, once you save a file, you will not be able to go back to the original, unless you have saved a spare copy.

Save the file to a Recordable Media or Send to Friends or Family

Now that your edit has been finalized, you can save it to your hard drive, burn it onto a CD or DVD or transfer it via the internet to friends and family.

It should be noted that Movica is a free, open source video editing application. You can download Movica Here.
