Biodiversity conservation classes held for school students

In the global movement towards conservation of biodiversity, the students of a Madurai school on Wednesday began to make a small contribution.

An awareness programme was held by the Capron Hall Girls' Higher Secondary School with the coordinator being Jessie Jeyakaran, Member of International Zoo Educator Association - South Asia Network.

The school also launched a signature campaign on conservation of amphibians. The signatures would be forwarded to the District Forest Officer, Chief Educational Officer and District Collector. Says the school headmistress, R. Rani Chandraleela, during the morning assembly, the gathering of around 3,000 students was told the importance of amphibians such as frog, which faces the threat of extinction.

"Our school was chosen as many students come from a rural background and also our school is very near to the river," says Correspondent A. Henry. Ms. Jessie Jeyakaran says that the while a general briefing was given to all the school students on biodiversity conservation, the school's National Green Corps (NGC) volunteers would be part of a yearlong effort in this direction.
