Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA)

The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) –Target-of –Opportunity Fellowship (TOF) is sponsored by the Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA), The Crane-Rogers Foundation. The Target-of –Opportunity is a Fellowship award instituted by ICWA for providing bright and brainy students a chance to understand a problem or an issue of a country or region situated outside the United States of America. Thereafter, the student or the scholar is required to discuss his findings in public.
The Fellowship is for a period of at least 2 years and candidates desirous of availing of the scholarship awards should be below 36 years of age.

Candidates should also satisfy the following criteria:

    * Should display the right attitude and initiative
    * Should have integrity
    * Should possess an unblemished character
    * Should possess outstanding communication skills
    * Should be enthusiastic and serious
    * Educational qualification is not considered

While selecting a candidate for the award, the ICWA strongly believes that he/she will contribute to the United States by spreading the acquired knowledge in his society which in turn will help civilization per se. The Institute grants the fellowship only to candidates who are greatly optimistic in their outlook of life and are ready to shoulder the consequences of an uncertain future.
The Target-of-Opportunity Fellowship allows an individual to conduct his study in any country of the world. However, the countries of interest to ICWA are:

    * Middle East
    * North Africa
    * Brazil
    * Japan
    * Korea
    * Republic of Mongolia
    * Poland
    * Russia
    * Venezuela

While the average amount per award varies on a case-to-case basis, the Target-of –Opportunity Fellowship covers travel, living and dependent expenses besides providing finance for housing and insurance for health. The Fellowship assists an individual by providing full financial support to self and family.

The TOF's are however not scholarships in the strictest sense of the term as they do not support academic work, research projects or writing of books.
