COIMBATORE: As an outcome of the Vice-Chancellors' meeting held in Chennai on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam has announced that training in a trade will be offered as an elective under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

An addition: The elective will be offered in addition to the diploma course that is being extended to undergraduates of the university.Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) had identified 200 trades to be offered as electives under the CBCS.

"The trades will be offered as electives since the Higher Education Ministry felt that there were very few to choose from. Also, there was a feeling that skill development electives were not available for the students," Mr. Thiruvasagam said.According to the decision of the Ministry, the trade training could be undertaken for six months (certificate course) or one year (diploma course), along with the degree programme the students were pursuing. The degree would be given by the university to which the college was affiliated to, while the certificate or diploma in the trade would be given by the DOTE.To propagate this, the representatives from DOTE were expected to visit the universities in the State.TrainingMr. Thiruvasagam said the students would get hands-on training in that particular trade in an industry; or, in the absence of an industry, in a polytechnic college.
