New 'green' car runs 170 km per litre

New Delhi: If you hate paying for fuel which is getting more and more expensive by the day, then you'll be happy to know India does have other options. Have a look at India's most fuel-efficient car.

The car can drive 170 km on one litre of fuel and was built by our very own students at the Delhi College of Engineering. The downside — it's maximum speed is only 45 km.

The leader of the team which made car, Shubhanshu Bansal says, "We built this car for the Michigan competition. We had to skip school and put in a lot of effort to build it."

The car cost about Rs 3.5 lakh to build. The students made a slower but higher mileage vehicle by converting a 150 cc engine into a 50 cc one. In other words they turned a Bajaj Pulsar Bike Engine into that of a Sunny Scooter. Combine this with an aerodynamic and lightweight body and you have our latest super mileage vehicle.

However, the car is not the most comfortable of modes of transportation. It has one gear and it can seat only one. But with rising petrol prices, fuel-efficient cars are going to be in high demand.

"We are looking forward to seeing green cars in the Indian market," says Shubhanshu Bansal.

But before green cars hit the market, here are a few ways to ensure your car travels further on fuel so that it doesn't leave you stranded on the highway.

    * Keep your tires fully inflated to make sure your engine isn't doing extra work.

    * All that stuff you keep in your boot is costing you lots of money on fuel.

    * Idling at long red lights is getting you 0 km to a litre, so switch off that engine.

    * Finally, drive at a consistent speed if you want to save on fuel.

If saving gas isn't for you, very soon you could be buying a hybrid, electric or even hydrogen fueled car. Whatever your choice, one thing is clear — green is the road that lies ahead.
