Acer

Market Value: $5.1 bn

Sales: $14.3 bn

Forbes calls Taiwan-based Acer one of the "sharpest tech titans in Asia." The world's third-biggest PC supplier bought US-based Gateway in 2007 and Packard Bell of the Netherlands this year, pushing Lenovo to fourth position.

An obscure Asian brand till a few years back, Acer today is an internationally recognised name. The company expects its notebook PC sales to hit a record 3.8 million units in September, followed by further growth in October and November, despite an economic slowdown. Presently, Acer's PC sales are driven by its new Aspire One low-cost, mini notebook model.

Acer's focus on consumer and educational segments and its limited exposure to corporate and government-related businesses is shielding the company from an overall slowdown.
