Taiwanese company Asustek is best known as the world's largest motherboard maker, however, last year the company split off its contract-manufacturing businesses into two new subsidiaries. The parent company is now focusing on building its own brand for PCs and other gadgets. The company is attracting lot of attention for its low-cost Eee PC range.

The Eee PC, whose most basic model sports a seven-inch screen and weighs about 1.5 pounds, has been a huge coup for Asustek. The tiny machine, known as a "netbook," can surf the Internet, send e-mails and play music but lacks the memory or processing power of a more expensive notebook. Asustek is confident of reaching its target for world-wide sales of five million Eee PCs this year.

The company also rolled out new, beefier versions of the Eee PC and related products this year. In June it launched the Eee PC 900, which is slightly bigger and more powerful that the original, and in July it started selling a family-oriented desktop called the Eee Box.

Asustek also plans to offer free online data storage and other Web services in an effort to distinguish its device from the increasingly crowded field of inexpensive personal computers.
