What is it that almost all computer makers have in common: Taiwan-based Wistron. This unsung manufacturer works for all of them. According to Forbes, it makes notebooks for Dell, Lenovo and Acer, which used to own Wistron. Now the company is turning out LCD TVs for Sony, desktop PCs and soon more monitors.

Taiwan's leading computer and peripheral original design manufacturers (ODM) reported a first-half gross profit increase of 50 per cent to $350 million. The company attributed the increase to strong shipments of notebooks and LCDs.

Wistron, once part of the design, manufacturing and services unit of Acer Inc, was spun off in 2001. Earlier in the year, Wistron agreed to purchase the computer monitor business of Lite-On Technology Corp.
