The Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Doctoral Fellowships were initiated to impart required training and opportunities for scholars with exceptional talent. It is expected that the scholars would conduct high quality research work by focusing on developmental issues connected primarily with Tamil Nadu.
MIDS was established by Dr. Malcolm S Adiseshiah and Mrs. Elizabeth Adiseshiah in 1971. Dr. Malcolm S Adiseshiah was the Director General of UNESCO

The Government of India explored the possibility of elevating MIDS to a national institute of social science research and sent a team of experts from the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) for conducting an in-depth study of the institute's academic and administrative activities. On receiving a favorable report from the team of experts, the Government of India conferred the status of a national institute on the Madras Institute of Development Studies, in the March of 1977. The Government of India, ICSSR and the Government of Tamil Nadu became the sponsors of MIDS

The MIDS aims to:

    * To conduct studies and research in development related problems with focus on the agricultural sector of the villages of the state of Tamil Nadu. It also resolves to analyze the causes for the backwardness of a large percentage of the population of our country
    * To hold symposiums, seminars and conferences on progress related issues focusing specially on Tamil Nadu.
    * To promote co-operation among the social scientists of the universities of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh
    * To initiate research activities and propagate information on related subjects

The Doctoral Fellowship awarded by the MIDS institute has the following features:

    * It is a full-time program for students and scholars engaged in teaching
    * The focus of the program is on the quality of research work and not on the number of scholars registered under the program
    * Fully flexible program and all the institutional facilities are available to the scholars
    * The theses compiled under the Doctoral Program is reputed for its all round excellence

The Doctoral Fellowship of the MIDS is given under the following 3 categories:

    * ICSSR Doctoral Fellowships
    * RBI Doctoral Fellowships
    * Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Ph.D. Merit Scholarship
