'Ta-ta' rivals: 6 Tata cars slated for launch in next 6 months for showdown

NEW DELHI: Tata Motors has been one of the domestic automakers that have fared quite well during the pandemic. Tata managed to roll out all of its 2020 launches- Altroz, Nexon BS6, Nexon EV, and the Harrier BS6- right before the lockdown began and these 4 offerings managed to keep the automaker afloat during the tough times in quite impressive manner.

The festive season was a boost for Tata Motors too as the automaker recorded the second biggest rise in November market from 4.84% to 7.5%. And now Tata seems to be banking on this miraculous turnaround as it is ready with back-to-back launches for the next 6 months to retain its overall market share especially when the competition is getting fiercer every day. Here's the list of the Tata cars that will take the competition to the next level in the coming days:

1. Tata Gravitas

Tata Gravitas is definitely the most anticipated launch out of all the Tata offerings slated for a 2021 launch. Gravitas is the 7-seater version of the homebred Harrier which is also doing quite well in the market.

Tata Gravitas will also be based on the same platform as its sibling, the OMEGARC, which is derived from Land Rover's D8 platform. Expected to be 63mm longer and 80mm taller than Harrier, the Gravitas will retain the Impact 2.0 design language. Tata Gravitas will borrow the same 2.0-litre Kryotec turbo diesel engine from Tata Harrier that manages to offer 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. The engine will be paired to the same 6-speed MT and 6-speed AMT derived from Hyundai.

Expected to start somewhere around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Gravitas will lock horns with MG Hector Plus and the upcoming next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the 7-seater version of the Hyundai Creta.

2. Tata HBX/Tata Hornbill

The Tata HBX, codenamed Hornbill, is the new micro-SUV that will be offered by the automaker. Showcased at the Auto Expo 2020, the Tata HBX looks like a downsized version of the Tata Nexon BS6. The HBX looks very rugged for a car of its size and is expected to be equally intriguing in terms of its performance as it is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine borrowed from Tata Tiago that offers 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The micro-SUV will possibly offer a 5-speed MT and an optional AMT.

Expected to be priced somewhere around Rs 5 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata HBX will take on the likes of Mahindra KUV100 and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis in the market.

3. Tata Hexa BS6

The launch of the Tata Hexa BS6 will mark its return to the line-up once again after it quietly went missing from the line-up after April 2020. The Tata Hexa, which was earlier the automaker's flagship model, will now be positioned under Tata Gravitas. Hexa will more or less be the rugged version of the Gravitas. Hexa will retain its Impact design language and look equally imposing on the roads.

Tata seems to be correcting the minor flaws with the SUV in the BS6 version like offering a 4x4 drivetrain with an automatic transmission. The 4x4 edition will be called the 'Safari Edition' and it was already showcased in Auto Expo 2020. The Tata Hexa is expected to flaunt a BS6 compliant version of the same 2.2-litre diesel engine that offers 156PS of power and 400 Nm of torque and will be paired to a 6-speed MT or 6-speed AMT.

Expected to receive a price hike, the BS6 Hexa will start at Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom) and will continue taking on the MG Hector Plus and the Toyota Innova Crysta.
