In 2018, Sudha Kongara stated that she will be collaborating with Suriya for the director's next film, which is tentatively called as Suriya 38. The film will be produced by Suriya's production house, 2D Entertainment[14] with Guneet Monga of Sikhya Entertainment as the co-producer. G. V. Prakash Kumar was selected to work on the film's music, collaborating with director Sudha and actor Suriya for the first time.[15] Niketh Bommireddy handles the film's cinematography. Meanwhile, Sathish Suriya who worked on director's Irudhi Suttru and Guru assigned as film editor and Jacki will handle as the film's art director.

The film production began with a principal photography on 7 April 2019.[16] On 13 April 2019, the title was revealed as Soorarai Pottru.[17] After months of shooting, the film was successfully wrapped in September 2019.[18][19][20]

Suriya spent about Rs 47 lakhs per day to rent an aircraft. The team shot almost a couple of weeks inside the aircraft, which indeed increased the budget of the film.[21]

The dubbed Telugu version of Soorarai Pottru is titled as Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra which is also releasing on the same date.[22] The makers of the film have also announced that the film will be dubbed in Kannada.[23]

Marketing

As part of the film's promotional strategy, the production company announced that they will collaborate with SpiceJet as their official partner. The chairman of SpiceJet, Ajay Singh was launched his company's Boeing 737 plane with a poster from the film branded on it on 13 February 2020, the same day where the second single of the film was launched inside on the company's Boeing 737 plane during mid-air flight. This will be the third time a passenger jet had been wrapped for advertising an Indian film, after AirAsia India did for Kabali in 2016 and SpiceJet for Darbar in 2020.[24][25]

Release

The film was scheduled to release on 9 April 2020, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[26] In an online interaction with his fans, Suriya said that he is eagerly waiting to catch the film on big screens.[27] Suriya's performance won praise from the Central Board of Film Certification.[28]

The film will be simultaneously released in Telugu with the title Aakasam Nee Haddhu Ra.[29] The makers of the film announced that the film will be dubbed in Kannada.[30]

Music

The music and score will be composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, working with Suriya for the first time. The audio rights have been acquired by Sony Music India. The lyrics for the Tamil version will be written by Snehan, Yugabharathi, Vivek, Arunraja Kamaraj, Yogi B, Ekadesi, Maya Mahalingam and Arivu.

The first single track, a theme song titled "Maara Theme" was released on 24 January 2020. The song, sung by Suriya, marks his third stint as a singer after sung for a song in 2014's Anjaan and still yet to be released Party.[31]

The second single track, titled "Veyyon Silli" was released during the second single's launching ceremony that was held inside SpiceJet's Boeing 737 aircraft flying on mid-air on 13 February 2020, the first in Tamil cinema history to hold a film's music launch during mid-air flight.[24] In addition, 100 first-time fliers including 70 school children are invited to the second single launch that was held during mid-air flight.[32]

A 1 minute video of fourth single track "Kaattu Payale" is to be released on 23 July 2020, coinciding on Suriya's birthday.[33]
