District Education Office for Kumbakonam soon

KUMBAKONAM: Additional buildings have been constructed for 69 schools in Thanjavur district at a cost of Rs. 39.69 crore under National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) scheme, said Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education, here on Monday.

He was speaking at the inauguration of Rs. 1.28 crore building constructed under NABARD scheme for the Kumbakonam Government Girls Higher Secondary Shool. The building, declared open by Ko. Si. Mani, Co-operation Minister, has 32 class rooms and two laboratory buildings.

Mr. Thennarasu said that such model buildings are to be constructed in each district. Kumbakonam stands first in the list. The sports ground of the school will also be improved at a cost of Rs. 18 lakh. A library building has also been constructed at a cost of Rs. 8.50 lakh.

The building has been named as Anna Centenary Celebrations Memorial building to commemorate the centenary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

Steps will be taken to upgrade Kamarajar Middle School at Kumbakonam into high school and high schools at Thirupurambiyam, Sundaraperumal Koil and Thirubuvanam into higher secondary schools.

Responding to the demand made by the people, the Minister said that a District Education Office would be opened at Kumbakonam soon. It will function with Kumbakonam as headquarters. M. S. Shanmugham, District Collector, said that 1,300 students studied in the school at Kumbakonam. The school has registered 97 per cent pass in plus two and tenth government examinations.

Ko. Si. Mani distributed Rs. 1,500 each to 35 students under farmers social security scheme at the function. Incentive was given by Thangam Thennarsu to the teachers who showed high per centage of pass.

S. N. M. Ubayathullah, Commercial Taxes Minister, S. Ramalingam, Chairman of Thiruvidaimaruthur panchayat union, S. Kalyanasundaram, Vice-president, Parent Teachers' Association, K. Anbazhagan, member of Kumbakonam panchayat council and Thamizhazhagan, Chairman of Kumbakonam Municipality, participated in the function.
