Colleges must leverage student ideas

TIRUCHI: Since the expectations of the companies are higher in the challenging situation caused by global recession, students must equip themselves in soft skills, communication skills, analytical skills and technical skills, according to J. Leo Ananth, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, Tiruchi zone.

Educational institutions should make efforts to leverage innovative ideas of students with the needs of corporates, he said, delivering a special lecture on 'Current Industrial Scenario – Recession and Revival' organised by the Department of Commerce and Financial Studies, Bharathidasan University, recently.

The CII, he said, provided a platform to students for industry exposure, helping them to acquire jobs or start new ventures. The Indian situation is better compared to economies in developed countries though IT, textile, tourism and automobile sectors have taken a hit. Indian industries have to brace up to face the current recession for the next two years, Mr. Leo Ananth said. Following the lecture, he interacted with students and explained the procedure for starting businesses.

A session was devoted for a debate on 'Contributions of Public Sector vs Private Sector in Indian Economic Development' chaired by D. Sivasubramaniam, Head, Department of Commerce, National College. The verdict was that both public and private sectors are essential for the smooth performance and fast growth of the Indian economy. Prof. Sivasubramaniam traced the growth of public and private sectors in the country against the backdrop of LPG (liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation). Rajaraman Venkatesan, Financial Analyst, Oracle, Bangalore, an alumnus, made a presentation on 'Six Sigma Practices'. Department Head M. Selvam saw the scope for institutions to accelerate efforts to impart industry-oriented training to students with CII participation. Department faculties M.Babu, S.Vanitha and J.Gayathri also interacted with the students.

Inaugurating the special lecture programme, R.T. Pannerselvam, Syndicate Member of Bharathidasan University and Principal, Government Arts College, Ariyalur, advised students to set goals and work towards attaining them.
