DINDIGUL: From now on, the Canara Bank that offers financial services to rural people will take care of their health also. For the first time, it has set up a homeopathy clinic as part of its rural clinic service under community development programme at Chennamanaickenpatti with an aim of taking alternative medical care to the doorstep of the rural poor.

Inaugurating the clinic at the village near here on Thursday, Collector R. Vasuki said that the nation's development depended on development of villages. To ensure this, villages must have education, health and road facilities. The main objective of the scheme was to provide medical facilities to backward villages that did not have access to basic medical care and to provide self-employment opportunities for unemployed doctors to set up their clinics in remote and backward villages.Opportunity was being given to qualified doctors recognised by the State and Central governments or universities approved by All India Medical Council.

The bank was offering Rs.3,000 as service charge to the doctor and Rs.1,500 for purchase of medicines. Even as the doctor would work on contract basis, he could find a good place in the hearts of villagers through his medical expertise and dedicated service.Performance of this centre should persuade the bank to extend its community service to other places, she said.

Even as the State government was taking all efforts to take health care to the rural poor, such measures by banks would expedite the process, she said. Canara Bank Assistant General Manager S. Nagarajan said that the bank disbursed Rs.25.06 crore as educational loans to 2,485 persons and revolving fund of Rs.6.83 crore to 800 self-help groups. Lead Bank Manager P.
