Hi Acumen's

Recently a techie from Jharkhand hanged herself at the Infosys campus in Mysore .The incident went virtually unnoticed till it was mentioned in a blog .Most of the bloggers blamed it work stress.

Was excessive work pressure responsiblefor a techie teking her life at the Infosys campus in Mysore on January 24? Chandraprabha , a 22 year old from Jharkhand ,Left a suicide note stating that no one was responsible for her death, but some of her colleagues have, in their pstings on ablog, blamed excessive work pressure for her extreme step .

When Bangalore Mirror contacted Infosys Technologies' Group Head,HR ,Nandita Gurjar, She said, "As of now, the reason is not clear and we do not wish to speculate about it. At the time, supporting the family in their hour of grief and being sensitive to their privacy is of utmost importance to us."

Chandraprabha ,who had joined the company four months ago, hanged herselfn her hostel room in Block 37 on the Infosys campus.

According to the Vijaynagar police, She left a suicide note in which she apologised for taking the extreme step and claimed that she alone was responsible for her action. The police said the incident acme to light at 5pm on January 24.According to them, her parents have "so far" not raised any "objections" regarding the incident.

But the very next day,  the suicide figure in a blog called 'Technical Happenings', Where techies blamed ' work pressure' for her death. The news falshed on the blog came from employees at the Mysore campus.

According to them, the company's "HR person" there asked employees not to mention the incident to anyone .

They reffered to "three days of continuous (excruciating)training, from8 am to more than 9 or 10pm in the night."

One blogger, Deepak, wrote on Januar29, "It is their training which is killing people. They cut short three months' training to one month and make employees clear exams with 65% marks. This puts them under very high stress.Infosys should make sure that people who fall in exams should be given proper trining for the remaining months. A human life is more importan than project delivery......."

Tarun said in his post on Jan26, "It is not that the whole world is not working but ... we Indians are being pushed to extrmem limits....... All IT firms in India take up projects at thelowest possible quotes and exploit employees, Keeping the fact that the employees are also human beings aside........I think this case should be made public so that who are opting to come into IT should be aware that it is HELL."

Some of the messages struck a different note.Mathi said onJanuary 29,"Infy recruited an immature girl...a corporate needs professionals..."

Leena's post on January 29 said, "It is not like she committed suicide because she failed.......her test result is not yet announced. There might be some personal problem."

Hi Acumen's now a Days, Community site is Safe , Is  It :blindfold and do You  :gum... :agree or  :boooo

New Delhi: Internet giant Google Inc, which operates social networking site Orkut, said on Tuesday that it has removed a fake profile of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati from the website.

"The fake profiles of Chief Minister Mayawati violated Orkut's policy on impersonation and have been removed," a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

"We take violations of Orkut's policy very seriously as such activities diminish the experience of our users. When we learn about illegal or inappropriate content, we act quickly to remove it," the spokesperson said.

Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Javed Ahmed said on Tuesday that the government would take strict action against the offenders. The spokesperson said the company has a reporting tool that state police authorities can use to have a direct line of contact to report inappropriate content on Orkut.

"The reporting tool does not affect the way we treat users' data. It only enables a faster, direct communication channel. Authorities will still be required to follow the appropriate legal process," the official said.

Meanwhile, cyber law experts said the government should take steps to prevent misuse of such networking platforms.

"These excesses on social networking sites are not covered under Information Technology Act. Even the proposed amendments to Indian Cyber Law seeks to make a feeble attempt in making the identity thefts as a bailable offence," Pawan Duggal, a cyber law exprt and Supreme Court lawyer, said.

"What is required is stringent deterrent provisions of civil and criminal liability for such crimes," he said. Duggal also said it was technically possible to identify the last computer from where the mysterious content was uploaded by Internet protocol tracking mechanism.

Hi Acumen's

Mumbai:  >:( A breakdown in an international undersea cable network badly disrupted Internet links to India and Egypt on Wednesday.

Egypt's Telecommunications Ministry said a communications cable in the Mediterranean was cut, disrupting 70 percent of the country's Internet network.

The ministry said in a statement it was not known how the cable was cut but that services would probably take several days to return to normal.

India reported serious disruptions to its services and one Indian Internet service provider linked the problem to the Egyptian outage.

"There has been a cable cut on several cable systems in Alexandria, Egypt which has impacted internet connectivity in India," Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), an internet service provider, said in a statement.

VSNL said its service had been "largely restored" by diverting to another cable.

India said it had lost more than half of its capacity.

"There has been a 50 to 60 percent cut in bandwidth," Rajesh Chharia, president of the Internet Service Providers' Association of India, told Reuters.

He told the Headlines Today news channel that a "degraded" service would be activated by Wednesday night, but full restoration will take 10 to 15 days.

Chharia said companies, including some of India's many outsourcing businesses, had been affected.

Chat Box / HBO to Offer Content Online
Jan 27, 2008, 03:32 AM
Hi Acumen's

HBO is rolling out a new service that will allow subscribers of the premium cable channel to watch HBO programs, movies, and sports shows on their computers.

The service will be offered first in Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin, through HBO's sister company Time Warner Cable, which is also part of the Time Warner Inc. media conglomerate.

HBO is in talks to expand the service to other areas and also to other cable providers in the US and, ultimately, overseas.

Only available to HBO subscribers who also use Time Warner Cable for high-speed Internet access, the new service will allow viewers to watch HBO programming on their computers using a special video player program.

Viewers can either download shows to their computers or begin watching them almost immediately online, similar to a video-on-demand program on cable TV.

Hi Acumen's

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday announced a renewed commitment over the next five years to Partners in Learning, a program that provides the education community with resources and training to help students reach their full potential. Through Partners in Learning, Microsoft seeks to leverage the power of software to create innovative educational experiences.

Partners in Learning is a key education initiative under Microsoft Unlimited Potential, the company's commitment to creating sustained social and economic opportunity for everyone. Tuesday's announcement represents a new, five-year, $235.5 million investment, and will bring the company's total 10-year commitment in Partners in Learning to nearly $500 million.

Since its launch in 2003, Partners in Learning has touched the lives of more than 90 million students, teachers and education policymakers in 101 countries. In the next five years, Microsoft is aiming to triple the impact of the project's three core programs: Innovative Teachers, Innovative Students, and Innovative Schools.

"Microsoft has always believed that education is the cornerstone of opportunity, and that investing in education is the best way to help young people achieve their potential," said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. "Partners in Learning is one of the ways Microsoft works with governments and schools around the world to help teachers use technology in the classroom to make learning exciting and relevant for the 21st century."

"Actively integrating technology into the classroom takes more than just PCs; it requires the cooperation and input of those with expertise, vision and strong experience in all aspects of the educational process," said Cristian-Mihai Adomnitei, minister of education, research and youth in Romania. "Microsoft's continued partnership and guidance through Partners in Learning has been instrumental in the success of our programs to achieve better education through IT and in forming talents for a competitive economy."

An important element of Partners in Learning is connecting the global teaching community, allowing educators to share their ideas with their peers around the world. This is brought to life through the Innovative Teachers program, which includes one of the world's largest online collaboration portals for educators, and a series of worldwide conferences that bring them together to share ideas and reward exceptional teaching practices.

In addition, the Innovative Students program provides affordable, reliable software to qualifying governments purchasing Windows-based PCs for primary and secondary students' personal use at home. Microsoft also works with governments, educators and partners to deliver expert guidance in holistic school reform, plus a road map for technology integration to help schools meet their education objectives.

Cars and Bikes / BMW X6 Concept Car 2009
Jan 23, 2008, 10:15 PM
Hi Acumen's

BMW X6 is the first car in the world to feature Dynamic Performance Control for unique directional stability and precision under all driving conditions as well as BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology.

- The powerful presence of the car's body merges smoothly and harmoniously with the low-slung roof
of the greenhouse. This flowing roofline is indeed a characteristic element of the coupe silhouette, just like the short front overhang, the long wheelbase and long rear overhang.

- In its design, BMW X6 expresses all the DNA so characteristic of BMW X. The optical balance of the front and rear wheels clearly visible from the side bears convincing testimony to BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology.

Just three months after the official debut of the X6 Concept, BMW has revealed the production version of the X6 coupe-crossover, which it calls a "Sport Activity Coupe." Along with the wild exterior comes an all-new twin-turbo V8 that will find its way into other new BMWs next year.

BMW is the first automaker to bring such an SUV to market, although other automakers are said to be planning similar coupe-like utility vehicles. Land Rover, for example, recently unveiled its LRX coupe-crossover concept.

Compared with the concept, very little has changed. In fact, you'll have a hard time noticing any differences at all. The only obvious design tweak was made to the crossover's side windows. On the concept, the B- and C-pillars are not visible, but on the production car they clearly divide up the glass.

Even the X6's complex front fender design made it to production. Each front quarter panel surrounds the entire headlamp, creating a very seamless appearance. The X6's aggressive front fascia is also carried over from the concept, with its large air intakes and stylish fog lamps.

As the photos show, the X6 is anything but a conservative design.
The X6's roofline begins arching downward after the B-pillar and continues plunging right to the X6's rising waistline. As a result, second-row headroom and rear cargo volume are both compromised.

The new X6 will be longer and lower than the new X5, seating only four. But what the sporty X6 loses in seating and storage, it is expected gain in performance.

Compared to the X5, the X6 has almost an inch of additional wheelbase length, and two inches of added width. The overall height of the X6 is a whopping 3.3 inches lower than that of the X5.

The range-topping X6 xDrive50i is propelled by an all-new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 unit producing 407 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 446 pound-feet of torque between 1750 rpm and 4500 rpm. The sprint to 62 mph takes just 5.4 seconds and fuel economy is estimated at around 19 mpg (U.S. gallons).

The engine is designed as a replacement to the company's current 4.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8. It is expected to filter into other models like the 5-Series, 6-Series and 7-Series in the near future.

The engine seems to represent the second stage in a shift at BMW from high-displacement naturally-aspirated motors to slightly smaller turbocharged powerplants. BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine that powers the 335i and 135i has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it appears BMW is hoping for similar results with its new V8.

The X6's other engine is also a twin-turbo setup. The xDrive35i will come with the aforementioned 3.0-liter inline-six from the 335i, producing 306 horsepower.

A diesel model will be offered in Europe, but it is unlike to come to America.

X6 to be BMW's first hybrid?

BMW has comitted to delivering an X6 hybrid, but official details have not yet been released. Visually the hybrid is identical to the regular X6 but BMW claims that the model is 20 percent more fuel-efficient.

Various reports indicate the X6 will be BMW's first production car offered with the option of a hybrid powertrain.

HI Acumen's ,

New Delhi: Think cars fly only in the movies? Well, meet the Skycar. A cross between a Ferrari and a Batmobile, it takes off vertically just like advanced fighter aircraft and is just one in a series of personal flying machines being developed around the world.

Cars this cool are still some way off. But driverless cars? Those you can get. For the past few years, robot cars have raced against each other, navigating deserts and city roads on their own, in contests backed by the US Army and private manufacturers.

Using easily available technology like GPS tracking, Intel computer chips and laser censors, they still aren't quite as good.

But in few years, they could replace our friendly neighbourhood taxi driver.

Robots or not, cars need gas and gas costs money. Then there are cars that run on air. Compressed air moves the pistons, which in turn drives the wheels. Result: absolutely no emissions and speeds up to 150 km per hour.

Tata Motors and French company MDI are already readying such a vehicle for Indian roads.

Bangalore: Five workers were killed and 13 others injured in the campus of IT major Infosys Technologies on Wednesday, when a scaffolding crashed at the site of an additional software development centre, police said.

"The incident occurred when the victims who were fixing the facade of the glass standing on the scaffolding fell on a concrete floor from a height of 45-50 feet after one of the ropes (holding the scaffolding) gave way from the top," Bangalore Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east) Subhendru Mukherjee said.

The injured have been rushed to the St John's Hospital in the city and Narayana Hrudyalaya, adjacent to the electronics city, about 30 km from Bangalore, for treatment. One of them was reported to be critical, while the remaining 12 were recovering.

An official of Shoba Developers, a construction firm that executes all Infosys building projects in the country as its main contractor, said the families of the five victims would be paid about Rs.2,50,000 as ex-gratia under the Workers' Compensation Act and a matching amount by the company after completing investigations into the incident.

The IT bellwether has one of the largest campuses in the electronics city on the outskirts of Bangalore. The specific work of fixing the glass facade was sub-contracted to CCCL Ltd of Chennai, the official said.

This is the second accident in the electronics city after three workers died last week in the Biocon Park campus when an under-construction storeroom came crashing down.
