Kodak IM5 Smartphone - Kodak Begins Its Smartphone Journey

Kodak has collaborated with Britain-based Bullit Mobile to launch its first Android smartphone – the Kodak IM5. Priced at $249 USD (approximately Rs. 15,800) the phone will go on sale in Europe first, followed by a global rollout by the end of Q1 2015.

As far as specifications go, the Kodak IM5 smartphone comes with decent mid-range specs. Powered by a 1.7 GHz octa-core processor from MediaTek, the phone features a 5-inch HD display (1280 x 720px resolution), 1GB of RAM and an internal storage of 8GB (expandable upto 32GB via microSD card). The phone will run on Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, although an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop has been promised by the company.

The camera front doesn't exactly scream spectacular, at least on paper. But that might be because very little is actually known about it. The Kodak IM5 will come with a 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, while the front will house a 5-megapixel camera.

India creates history as ISRO's first Mars orbiter Mangalyaan successfully enters red planet's orbit


The Mars Orbiter insertion exercise began at 4:17 AM. The spacecraft switched over to the medium gain antenna at 6:56 AM.

The nail-biting moment was at 7:17 AM when the burn of the liquid apogee motor started and reduce the spacecraft's speed relative to Mars from 22.3 to 4.2 kilometers per second. It has to awaken as it was in sleeping mode for 300 days. The ISRO received confirmation only at 7:30 AM.

The engine stopped burning at 7:41 AM and communication with the spacecraft was be re-established at 7:47 AM.

Twenty-one minutes prior to the start of the manoeuvre, the spacecraft rotated forward to point its engine.

The engine fired again for about 24 minutes, imparting a deceleration force of 1098.7 metres per second to enable the spacecraft to slip into an orbit with a nearest distance of 423 km to the red planet and a farthest distance of 80,000 km. The manoeuvre consumed 249.5 kg of the 280 kg fuel on board the spacecraft.

NYU launches largest student hacking competition On worldwide


Last year, over 15,000 students attended and competed in preliminary rounds in order to reach the finals in six separate competitions. This year, which is the 11th CSAW event, the winners of the preliminary hacking rounds will travel to Brooklyn, NYC to compete for scholarships and prizes.

The competition finals will take place 13 – 15 November.

Dubbed 'Capture the Flag,' the hacking event includes the testing and securing of hardware, quizzes and research submissions. In addition, new this year, students will also compete to develop the best cybersecurity public policy.

Yahoo's chief information security officer Alex Stamos will be in attendance, and will deliver the keynote address during the Finalist Reception on November 13. Stamos's talk, "Shaping the Future: Spies, Cyber Crimes, and Your Career," will explore historical and ethical debates within the field, as well as discuss his own experiences in protecting the data of Yahoo users.

Amazon's Prime Air is an octocopter, a drone fitted with eight rotors. Most recently, Amazon had said it is developing vehicles that weigh less than 25kg and travel at over 80kmph. The drone will carry a payload of up to 2.26kg, which covers 86% of products sold on Amazon.

Top-selling products such as mobiles and books will likely be delivered within 90 minutes-3 hours for select customers.

Amazon's plan to deliver packages using drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, according to two people aware of the development. Apple has also slashed the price of all variants in India. The 13-inch 128GB MacBook Pro Retina will now retail at Rs. 94,900 (down from Rs. 99,900), the 256GB at Rs. 109,900 (down from Rs. 114,900), the 512GB 13-inch variant at Rs. 129,900 (earlier Rs. Rs. 134,900), and the 15-inch 256GB variant at Rs. 144,900 (earlier Rs. 149,900).

The biggest price drop is on the high-end, 15-inch 512GB variant MacBook Pro Retina, which will now retail Rs. 179,900, compared to Rs. 199,900 earlier. This variant has received a price cut of $100 in the US market, while the price of other models remain unchanged.

The prices (before taxes) in the US now stand at $1299 (13-inch, 128GB), $1499 (13-inch, 256GB), $1799 (13-inch, 512GB), $1999 (15-inch, 256GB), and $2499 (15-inch, 512GB).

Retina MacBook Pro Lineup Refresh Brings Faster CPUs, More RAM Standard; India Prices Slashed

Apple has refreshed its lineup of Retina MacBook Pro laptops, giving each model a speed bump and an increased amount of RAM by default. Further, the India prices of all Retina MacBook Pro variants have been slashed, with most models receiving a  Rs. 5,000 price drop, while the most expensive variant has seen its price cut by Rs. 20,000. The non-Retina MacBook Pro has received a price drop of  Rs. 11,000.

All 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro laptops will now come with 8GB RAM standard. Earlier, the 256GB and 512GB SSD storage variants came equipped with 8GB RAM, while the entry-level 128GB model had 4GB RAM standard. The 128GB and 256GB SSD storage variants will now come with 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, instead of the 2.4GHz processor they earlier came with. The 512GB SSD variant gets a speed bump from 2.6GHz to 2.8GHz.

The 15-inch 256GB SSD variant of the Retina MacBook Pro will now come with 16GB RAM as standard to match its 512GB SSD counterpart. The CPU on the 256GB and 512GB SSD variants has been bumped up to 2.2GHz and 2.5GHz respectively, a jump of 200MHz for both.

Amazon infuses $2 billion into Indian arm, a day after Flipkart announced $1 billion funding

On Tuesday Flipkart announced that it raised a fresh round of funding worth $1 billion. This is seen as a part of Flipkart's aggressive scale up after Amazon's rapid expansion in India that has heated up competition.

Now a day later, Amazon announced that it will invest an additional $2 billion "to support its rapid growth and continue to enhance the customer and seller experience in India."

Cortana will be a part of an Windows Phone 8.1 update but users in India will get an alpha version of the app.

Windows Phones will get the voice-recognising app in an update to Windows Phone 8.1 that will begin rolling out to developers next week and to users in the coming months.

Ford launches new-look 'muscular' Endeavour  at Rs 19.84 lakh

The 2014 Ford Endeavour sport a fresh new look, with a bold grille and headlamps, and refreshed interiors.

The new Ford Endeavour will be sold at the starting price of from Rs 19,83,898 for the base variant.

The Endeavour continues to be powered by 16-valve Duratorq TDCi powertrain. The 3.0-liter Duratorq TDCi common-rail powertrain peaks at 380 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm with 156PS of power.

The SUV is available in three variants: 2.5 Liter Duratorq TDCi 4×2 Manual Transmission, a 3.0-Liter Duratorq TDCi 4×2 Automatic Transmission and a 3.0-liter Duratorq TDCi 4×4 Automatic Transmission, that will be available at Rs 19,83,898, Rs 21,28,119 and Rs 23,06,302 respectively (all ex-showroom Delhi prices).

Twin blasts at Chennai Central Station, woman dead, at least 10 injured

Two low- intensity bomb blasts took place on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express as it was approaching platform number 9 at the Chennai Central Station, killing one and injuring at least 10 others. The explosions took place on coaches S4 and S5 of the train.
Chennai Police have detained a suspect in connection with blasts.

The train arrived at the station around 7.05 am and the explosion took place at 7.15 am. Southern Railway General Manager R K Mishra at Chennai Central told reporters that the train was being checked by the bomb disposal squad.
Chief spokesman of India's southern railway system M. Bhupati said  that authorities suspect the blasts were caused by bombs planted on the train. Police are investigating.

Bhupati says at least one of the blasts erupted from underneath a seat. The woman killed had been sitting in the seat where the explosion occurred.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Swati, who was travelling to Guntur along with a relative. The Union Railways Minister Mallikarjun Kharge had declared an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Two people were critically injured and seven others have minor injuries.

World's biggest cyberattack detected, 360 million accounts, 1.25 billion email addresses hacked

One of the hacker attacks stole over 105 million records making it the single largest data breach in cybercrime history.

The trove included credentials from more than 360 million accounts and around 1.25 billion email addresses.

The discovery was made by cybersecurity firm Hold Security. "These credentials can be stolen directly from your company but also from services in which you and your employees entrust data. In October 2013, Hold Security identified the biggest ever public disclosure of 153 million stolen credentials from Adobe Systems. One month later we identified another large breach of 42 million credentials from Cupid Media," the firm said.

Adobe's security team announced recently that the attackers accessed Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords on its systems and removed information including customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and customer orders.

US company to beam free wi-fi to entire world from space

A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet - a global network of cube satellites broadcasting Internet data to all the people on the planet - for free.

The idea is to offer free Internet access to all people, regardless of location, bypassing filtering or other means of censorship, according to the New York based non-profit organisation, Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).

MDIF proposes that hundreds of cube satellites be built and launched to create a constellation of sorts in the sky, allowing anyone with a phone or computer to access Internet data sent to the satellites by several hundred ground stations.

The organisation claims that 40 per cent of the people in the world today are still not able to connect to the Internet - and it's not just because of restrictive governments such as North Korea - it's also due to the high cost of bringing service to remote areas, 'phys.org' reported.

An Outernet would allow people from Siberia to parts of the western US to remote islands or villages in Africa to receive the same news as those in New York or Tokyo.

The Outernet would be one-way - data would flow from feeders to the satellites which would broadcast to all below.

MDIF plans to add the ability to transmit from anywhere as well as soon as funds become available.

MDIF has acknowledged that building such a network would not be cheap. Such satellites typically run $100,000 to $300,000 to build and launch.

The timeline for the project calls for deploying the initial cubesats as early as next summer.

Trail run was conducted between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar today (14-02-14).

The trial run covered a distance of about 6 kms. Thiru.Pankaj Kumar Bansal, I.A.S., MD, CMRL, Directors, CGMs and officials from CMRL, DMRC, GC, Alstom, SOMA, L&T and Siemens were present during this trail run. Three trails trips were conducted between the above stations.
