Tuticorin: As part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the field of health, various medical camps were being conducted by Sterlite Industries India Limited (SIIL) in different parts of the district at regular intervals. A medical camp was organized at Nainarpuram village in association with Apollo Hospitals, Madurai, on Sunday.

Around 160 villagers were benefited from the camp and the participants were screened by a team of doctors comprising Dr. Udhaya and Dr. Shankar.

Indian Medical Association to organise health camps for doctors

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu State branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will organise exclusive health camps for the benefit of medical fraternity, its president R. Gunasekaran said.

Speaking after being installed as the president of the State branch of the IMA for 2009-10, here on Saturday, Dr. Gunasekaran said that doctors should keep themselves fit to serve the society.

The IMA has taken up the responsibility of preventing coronary artery disease, particularly among the men doctors at high risk; and cancer -- cervix and breast -- among women doctors.

The IMA's branches would organise special health camps for doctors.

He also said that the specialists in cardiology, gynaecology and other fields would screen the doctors during the course of these camps.

The State branch of the IMA would sanction adequate funds to the local branches for organising these camps.

Dr. Gunasekaran said that the State branch would also focus on the IMA's national programmes, including 'Save the girl child,' 'Anaemia-free India,' and 'Aao Gaon Chalen' (let us go to villages).

Referring to the menace being caused by quacks, he underlined the need for enacting an anti-quackery bill by the State government.

The branches of the IMA would observe "Anti-quackery week" from October 2 throughout the State, with a view to creating awareness among the masses in the larger interest of ensuring a responsible health care to the public.

The State secretary of the IMA, T. N. Ravisankar, in his report, said that the State branch of the IMA had imparted special training through its special courses for para-medical personnel.

Out-going president L.V. K. Moorthy installed the office-bearers on the occasion.

The national president-elect, IMA Headquarters, New Delhi, G. Samaram released a souvenir.

The national vice-president K. Vijayakumar declared open an exhibition.

The honorary secretary general, IMA headquarters, New Delhi, Dharam Prakash, was among those who spoke.

Health camp for senior citizens held

CHENNAI: The valedictory programme of a 10-day master health check up for senior citizens was held at the Government General hospital here on Monday.

The camp was sponsored by the Probus Club of Chennai. Around 30 members were screened every day during the camp period, according to representatives of the Club.

R. Subbaraj, secretary of the Club, said that the programme had benefited the participants as they did not have to pay large sums of money.

"The equipment was placed in one room so senior citizens did not have to go to various departments for the tests."

The master health check up was provided to senior citizens at a concessional rate of Rs. 150 and included ECG, X-ray and ultrasound tests.

Senior officials of the State Government, including Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi and Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj participated.

There are proposals to extend such subsidised health check up programmes to taluk hospitals and later to primary health centres.

KORAPUT: A free medical camp was organised by JK Paper Mills at Budni, a remote village near Kalyansinghpur in Rayagada district. People, who are purely dependent on the bamboo operation work of JK Paper Mills for their livelihood were given free medical care and medicines.

More than 200 people from Budni, Tentulipadar, Narengtola, Chatikona and Melkajuba villages were benefited by the programme, said M.C. Goel, executive vice-president (works) of the paper mill.

He said more such medical camps would be conducted as part of the company's social responsibility.

KRISHNAGIRI: A total of 2,164 physically challenged persons attended the special medical camp conducted at Bargur recently.

A meeting was convened by Collector V.K. Shanmugam recently. It was decided at the meeting that officials from all the departments will assemble at one place to redress the grievances of the physically challenged.

Collector instructed the officials to ensure bus facility to the medical camps. The date and time of the camp should be informed well in advance through proper advertisements.

Equipments to the physically challenged persons should be distributed at the camp itself.Collector said that about 315 national identity cards were distributed.

Order for financial assistance through revenue department was issued to 250 persons and 270 persons became members of the Welfare Board. Bank loans were given to 35 persons for self-employment. District Revenue Officer S. Nagarajan, Additional Collector (Development) Darez Ahmed, District Rehabilitation Officer Manimaran and other officials participated in the camp, says a press release.

Tirupur: As many as 1,572 people were screened at a mega free health camp organised by the Corporation at Gandhi Nagar here on Friday under the government-sponsored Varumun Kappom Thittam.

City Health Officer K.R. Jawaharlal said that five persons who were detected with cataract had been referred to the District Headquarters Hospital situated on Tirupur-Dharapuram road for free surgery.

Services of 95 doctors and paramedical staff attached to Tirupur GH and primary health centres were utilised to check the people.

Coimbatore: Larsen and Toubro, in association PSG Urban Health Centre, conducted a free health camp at Panchayat Union Elementary School, Chettippalayam, on August 30 (Sunday).

L&T Vice-President S.C. Sarkar inaugurated the camp. A release said that 315 villagers attended the camp and underwent comprehensive health check-up.

They were offered medical advice and diet tips. Free medicines were also distributed.

The camp was as part of a Corporate Social Initiative of L&T was aimed at benefiting the villagers of Malumichampatti and Chettipalayam panchayats where the company has manufacturing facilities. The health camp would continue till the entire population in these villages is covered.
