Tesla driver in fatal California crash first to face felony charges involving Autopilot

A Tesla owner is facing the first felony charges filed against someone using a partially automated driving system in the US, according to AP. The defendant, Kevin George Aziz Riad, was driving a Model S when he ran a red light and crashed into a Honda Civic at a California intersection in 2019. It ended up killing the Civic's two passengers, while Riad and his companion sustained non-life threatening injuries. California prosecutors filed two counts of vehicular manslaughter against Riad in October last year.

The court documents reportedly didn't mention anything about Autopilot. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has been investigating the incident over the past couple of years, recently confirmed that it was switched on at the time of the crash. The NHTSA formally opened a probe into Tesla's driver assistance system in August last year following a string of 11 crashes involving parked first responder vehicles that killed 17 people. It's also investigating other types of crashes with Tesla vehicles, including one complaint blaming the beta version of the company's Full Self Driving technology for a collision in California.

As AP notes, Riad is the first to face charges involving a widely used driver assistance technology, but he's not the very first person using an automated driving system to be charged in the US. In 2020, an Uber backup driver was charged with negligent homicide after the company's autonomous test vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona. According to an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Uber's technology detected the victim more than five seconds before the crash but wasn't able to identify her as a pedestrian. The driver could have avoided the crash if she had been paying attention.

The NHTSA told AP in a statement that "every vehicle requires the human driver to be in control at all times" even if it has a partially automated system. On its Autopilot page, Tesla says that Autopilot is "intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment."

BSNL Launches Three Prepaid Plans Under Rs. 20 With Up To 2GB Data

The State-run telecom operator BSNL has been getting a positive approach of late as it offers relatively cheaper prepaid recharge plans as compared to rivals. It started getting the love from users soon after other telecom operators such as Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio increased their prepaid tariff late last year.

Adding to this, BSNL also offers extended validity and data benefits to its subscribers. In terms of comparison, the private operators cut down benefits in select circles. Following this, there are reports that customers are porting to BSNL in large numbers in various circles. Now, BSNL has introduced three low-cost plans priced under Rs. 20. Let's take a look at these newly launched prepaid plans from here.

The three new prepaid plans from BSNL offer up to 2GB of additional data. These plans will come to help when the existing prepaid plan's daily data limit is exhausted. These are data vouchers priced at Rs. 13, Rs. 16, and Rs. 19. Notably, these plans offer up to 2GB of data and a validity of 1 day. As emergency vouchers, these will offer only 3G internet speeds in all circles.

The BSNL Rs. 13 prepaid plan bundles 2GB of data for browsing the net, streaming videos and more and offer a validity of 1 day besides the additional data benefit. The Rs. 16 prepaid plan offers 2GB of data and one day of validity but is available only in select circles. The last prepaid voucher is priced at Rs. 19 and offers 2GB of high-speed 3G data and has a 1 day. None of these plans offer voice and SMS benefits.

Given that mobile data is highly used these days and internet connectivity is significant, it can get quite frustrating to run out of data. So, if you have exhausted the data benefit of your existing plan, then you can recharge to any of these data vouchers priced under Rs. 20 to use it on top of your existing plan when you run out of data. If you are low on data or have run out of daily data limit on your existing plan, then you can check for these mini data recharge plans to get 2GB of extra data for a day.

Making it more attractive to users opting for BSNL, the telco is also offering free data benefits to those who make the switch. Last month, BSNL announced additional offers for subscribers who use their annual prepaid plan of Rs. 2,399. Those who subscribe to this plan will get an additional validity of 90 days.

Notably, this offer was slated to end on January 15 but the telco seems to have continued this offer. Going by this offer, the Rs. 2,399 prepaid plan that usually offers 365 days of validity will come with an extended validity of 90 days, which totals 455 days of validity without spending any additional amount. So, you can continue to get this additional data benefit until the telco puts an end to it.

Microsoft Adds Five New Features To Teams; Big Help For Frontline Workers

Microsoft Teams is getting five new features aimed at helping frontline employees cope with stress. Walkie Talkie app, organizing virtual appointments, Microsoft Viva, Reflexis Shifts Connector, and audio notice for the misplaced device are among the new features.

For the Walkie Talkie app in Microsoft Teams, Microsoft has collaborated with Zebra mobile devices, but it will also be accessible for other cellphones. It could be easy for the company's entire team to stay up to speed on necessary and recommended training as per the Microsoft Viva learning app.

Microsoft said in a blog post that Microsoft Teams will now include five new features to help frontline workers cope with stress. According to the latest Work Trend Index from the American IT giant, 88 percent of frontline workers are "excited about job chances created by technology."

The Walkie Talkie app is the most important of the five new technologies introduced. Zebra's new app will be available on a variety of mobile devices. The push-to-talk (PTT) button on Zebra mobile devices uses Microsoft Teams' digital Walkie Talkie capabilities to empower frontline employees with clear, quick, and secure communication. On the other hand, the Walkie Talkie app will be available on Android and iOS devices as well as on Zebra mobile devices.

The second feature offered by Microsoft is the ability to manage virtual appointments. Workers will be able to "manage and request approvals in their business using Power Apps component framework (PCF) controls" with this capability. Frontline workers will be able to see a holistic view of virtual appointments as well as real-time data on wait times, queueing, missed appointments, and staffing delays due to this functionality.

The third upgrade is to the Microsoft Viva app, which allows employees to find, access, share, and track learning content from Microsoft Teams. The Viva learning app has unveiled major collaborations with EdCast and OpenSesame, which will give employees access to a wealth of information to help them upskill and train.

The fourth new feature for Microsoft Teams is Reflexis Shift Connector, which connects to Reflexis Workforce Scheduler (RWS) to create a "seamless, real-time sync for viewing, allocating, and monitoring shift requests." RWS is stated to help with worker autonomy, optimize scheduling, and provide frontline workers with access to their schedules when used in conjunction with Microsoft Teams.

Furthermore, Microsoft Teams will now send out a notification when a device is misplaced. The IT department will be able to send out an audio alert that will assist frontline staff in quickly locating the missing device. Moreover, frontline employees will be able to sign out all relevant apps with a single tap on Android smartphones to make the devices ready for the next worker.

Samsung Exynos 2200 Announced: Coming To Galaxy S22 Series Of Smartphones

After multiple delays, Samsung has finally launched its most powerful mobile processor -- the Exynos 2200. This is the first smartphone SoC to feature a custom AMD RDNA2 architecture-based GPU known as Xclipse GPU and here are the details on the all-new Exynos 2200, powering the upcoming Galaxy S22 series of smartphones in select markets.

The Exynos 2200 is fabbed using cutting-edge 4nm fabrication, similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 and the Dimensity 2000 SoC. This makes this processor energy-efficient in comparison to the Exynos 1200, the predecessor of the Exynos 2200.

Samsung has put a lot of emphasis on the GPU of the Exynos 2200, which is custom designed in collaboration with AMD. The word Xclipse brings the "X" which stands for Exynos and eclipse, indicating the start of a new chapter in the mobile gaming era. The Xclipse 920 GPU offers features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS), which were limited to PCs and consoles.

To improve the overall performance and energy efficiency, the Exynos 2200 also includes technologies like multi-IP governor (AMIGO). As the Exynos 2200 is an SoC, it is not just a GPU, and it does have an octa-core CPU setup along with a custom 5G modem, custom ISP, and more. There is also a custom AI engine with Dual-core NPU and DSP.

Coming to the CPU aspect of the Exynos 2200, the processor has eight CPU cores with a single primary high-performance core based on the ARM Cortex-X2 microarchitecture. Then there are three performance cores based on ARM Cortex-A710 microarchitecture, and four efficient cores based on ARM Cortex-A510 microarchitecture. This CPU design is similar to what we have seen on the Dimensity 2000 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen1.

The custom IPS on the Exynos 2200 is now capable of capturing and processing up to 200MP images in the single-camera mode. Similarly, it also supports 108MP image capture or a dual-camera setup with a 64MP primary camera and a 32MP secondary camera. As per the videos, the Exynos 2200 can encode and decode 4K HDR videos and 8K videos with up to 60fps.

Coming to the display support, the Exynos 2200 can power a 4K display with up to 120Hz refresh rate or a 2K display with up to 144Hz refresh rate. It also supports LPDDR5 type RAM and UFS 3.1 type storage for faster memory access. Samsung has confirmed that the Exynos 2200 is already in the production line. We believe that the Samsung Galaxy S22 series of smartphones will be the first to feature Exynos 2200.

In terms of features and specifications, the Exynos 2200 is on par with the competition. The GPU seems to be the highlighting factor of this SoC. However, we should get a clear idea of the capabilities of the Exynos 2200 once we start getting phones with this processor. Like every year, India will definitely receive the Exynos 2200 powered Galaxy S22, while the markets like the US will get Snapdragon 8 Gen1 powered Galaxy S22.
