Special eye camp for children today

Kakinada: Goutami Eye Institute (GEI), Rajahmundry is organising a special eye camp for children aged below 14 at Municipal Girls High School in Jagannadhapuram here on May 13 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Those wishing to avail of the opportunity should come with white ration cards.

GEI programme manager A Radhakrishna said in a press release that blindness and poor eyesight could be cured by providing them proper treatment at the right time.

Cataract, squint and corneal defects are the main reasons for blindness among children. Treatment will be provided free of cost for these problems at Wednesday's camp.

Eye donation

VELLORE: The eyes of Jeeva (16) of Palanisamy Street, Tirupattur, who drowned while bathing in a temple tank in Tiruvannamalai, were handed over to the eye bank of Christian Medical College Schell Eye Hospital, Vellore.

Jeeva had gone for a bath on May 8 but drowned. He was rescued and admitted to the government hospital, Tiruvannamalai, from where he was referred to CMC Hospital, Vellore. He died there on May 15. His relatives desired to donate his eyes to the eye bank of the CMC. Based on a request from S. Ramesh, president, Udhavum Ullangal, Tirupattur, and brother-in-law of Jeeva, the boy's eyes were removed and preserved at the eye bank.

ERODE: Department of Handlooms and Textiles recently conducted an eye camp for weavers.

A release says under the Weavers Welfare Insurance Scheme, through the ICICI insurance card, the weavers of Veerappanchatram Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sales Society and Dravida Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society participated.

Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital was the partnering institution, the release adds. Senior Department officials were present on the occasion.

Eye camp at NLC

CUDDALORE: The Neyveli Lignite Corporation will organise a one-day free eye camp on the NLC general hospital premises at Neyveli near here on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Specialists from Aravind Eye Hospital, Puducherry, would examine children and adults for refractive errors, squint, glaucoma, squint, cataract and other eye ailments.Those selected for the cataract surgery would be taken to the Aravind Eye Hospital on the same day. For them the operation, intraocular lenses, medicine, transport and accommodation would be provided free of cost.

Those intending to attend should bring the Electors' Photo Identity Card or ration cards for address proof, an NLC statement added.

Sterlite organises free eye camp

Tuticorin: A free eye camp at RC Primary School, Cruzpuram here was organized by Sterlite Industries India Limited in association with Boopalrayapuram Merchants' Association and Aravind Eye hospital, Tirunelveli on Sunday. Around 200 people benefited from the camp and the participants were screened by a team of doctors from Aravind hospital comprising Dr. M. Sakthivel and Dr. L. Praneep.

During the camp, tests for various defects like myopia, hypermetropia, presbyopia, eye pressure, colour blindness were carried out on the participants and 20 people were referred for cataract surgery to Aravind Eye hospital in Tirunelveli.
Spectacles provided

As many as fifty two people were identified with eye defects and provided with free spectacles. R. Rajasekarapandy, Associate Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, Suganthi Chelladurai, Associate Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, SIIL, the members of Merchants' Association and employees of Sterlite were present.

Free eye camp inaugurated at NLC hospital

NEYVELI: Neyveli Lignite Corporation director (Finance) J.N. Prasannakumar inaugurated a two-day free eye camp at the NLC General Hospital here on Wednesday.

He said that the NLC had so far conducted seven free eye camps for people living in the surrounding villages.

The camp, launched on Wednesday, was the eighth in the line being organised in coordination with Aravind Eye Hospital, Puducherry.

Mr. Prasannakumar said that in terms of medical equipment and service, the NLC General Hospital stood on a par with any specialty hospital in Chennai and Bangalore.

The NLC was taking all efforts to expand greenery on its premises and hence there was not much of pollution despite large-scale mining activity.

Mr. Prasannakumar said that the NLC had installed control mechanism worth several crores to keep pollution below the level prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

NLC director (personnel) P. Babu Rao said that eye camps and health camps were being organised for the well-being of the people living near Neyveli and not for fame.

He recalled a camp organised in 2004 along with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Samithi, Jaipur, for distributing artificial limbs to differently abled persons. He called upon the organisers to arrange for another such camp in the near future.

Doctors screened 800 persons at the camp on Wednesday and recommended 105 for cataract surgery. They were taken to Aravind Eye Hospital in the evening for surgery.

NLC director (mines) B. Surender Mohan, Chief General Superintendent of NLC hospital V.Seetharaman and Chief of Aravind Eye Hospital Venkatakrishnan were present.

1,300 patients screened at eye camps


KHAMMAM: Over 1,000 patients had undergone the preliminary vision testing and diagnostic examination at the free eye camp organised by the Police Department in coordination with the Shankar Foundation at Karepalli on Sunday.

Helped by the ophthalmic assistants, doctors examined the patients, mainly the residents of tribal tandas – for clinical conditions such as external eye infections, vision loss caused by nutritional deficiency and various other factors.

Patients advised surgery, were motivated by the counsellors. Some 187 of them with serious vision related problems were referred to the Shankar Foundation, Visakhapatnam.

They will undergo the surgery and avail post-operative care free of cost.

The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh M. Bhagwat who inaugurated the eye camp said that people in the rural pockets were yet to be fully aware of the health care. Illicit distillation had been a major problem in the tandas, had been playing havoc with their health.

The problem was being felt increasingly in habitations such as Bhagyanagar tanda near Karepalli.

He sounded a warning against the practice of illicit brewing and wanted it to be stopped immediately. People should come out of the superstitions also. Quacks and conmen have been cashing in on the superstition of the village people.

Vinod Prasad, coordinator Shankar Foundation eye hospital, sub divisional police officer, Ramulu were among those who spoke.

In the meantime, a similar eye camp was organised at Burgumapdu village. Some 300 patients had undergone for screening for cataract and 100 of them were referred to the Sri Kiran Eye Hospital Kakinada for surgery.

The Kothagudem Deputy Superintendent of Police, Prakash Jadav, Inspector, Ganesh and sub-inspector, Narasimha Reddy were among those who took part.

Eye camp held

Tuticorin: As many as 180 people benefited from a free eye camp organised by Indian Bank's Melur branch in association with Vivekananda Kendram here on Sunday at R.C Bethani School.

As many as 30 persons were identified with defective vision and referred to Aravind Eye Hospital here for removal of cataract.

Ten National Social Service (NSS) volunteers of Barathiyar Vidyalayam Higher Secondary School, Perumalpuram, assisted the two camp doctors and 12 paramedical staff from the Hospital.

Free eye camp to be held on July 12

VIZIANAGARAM: Toshniwal Walkers' Club here, in association with Sankar Foundation, Visakhapatnam, will conduct a free eye camp in memory of J.L. Toshniwal on the premises of Jonnavalasa Zilla Parishad High School from 9 a.m. onwards on July 12 and late Toshniwal's 80th birthday celebrations at Toshniwal Bhavan here. 'Toshniwal Home', a care and support centre for the physically challenged children will be inaugurated at Kotta Kopperla (Konada Junction) in Poosapatirega mandal the following day, according to Ch, Mohana Rao, president of the Walkers' Club.

At a press conference here on Thursday, he said that the poor who required eye operations would be referred to Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital in Visakhapatnam after diagnosis.
Free transport

The club would also arrange free transport for the patients. The patients, however, have to attend the camp with previous medical reports, if any, and white ration card to avail of the facility.

He said that P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, MLA, would inaugurate the eye camp.

Eye bank to be opened in Gulbarga

GULBARGA: President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society and MLC Shashil G. Namoshi said on Saturday that a full-fledged eye bank would be set up at the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital in the city on September 1.

Mr. Namoshi told presspersons that the proposed eye bank would be established in the ophthalmology department of the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital.
Training

He said that three technicians from the ophthalmology department here had been sent to the Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad for training. Trained doctors were available in the hospital to run the proposed eye bank, he added.

Mr. Namoshi said that Rs. 10 lakh had been provided to set up a "slit laboratory" in the eye bank and an additional Rs. 10 lakh had been released for improving existing hospital infrastructure.

To a question, he said that the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital would be converted into a super-speciality treatment centre, in a phased manner.
Initiative

An initiative had been taken to establish an oncology department in the hospital by inviting a consulting oncologist from Bangalore to visit once in three months to screen patients and treat patients. Mr. Namoshi said that a full-time nephrologist had been appointed in the hospital.

Free eye camp organised

Nellore: Over 100 patients were treated at a free eye camp conducted at S.S. Praja Vaidyasala in Nellore on Friday.

The camp was organised by Vasan Eye Hospital in association with The Private Medical Practitioners (PMP) Association of India.

Mayor N. Bhanusri, who inaugurated the eye camp, complimented the hospital and the PMP doctors for organising the free camp, whcih she said would be of immense benefit to the people, especially the poor. Hospital manager Satyam Reddy, Dr. Rehaman, PMP Association district president S. Venugopal and others were present.

Free eye camp to be held in Vellore on Sunday

VELLORE: The Vellore District Jaggery Merchants Charitable Trust, Vellore District Blindness Prevention Society and Arvind Eye Hospital, Puducherry, will be organising the 6th Annual Free Eye Screening Camp at Rangalaya Thirumana Mandapam in Gandhinagar near here from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Participants will be tested for cataract, diabetes, retinopathy, glaucoma, myopia, long-sightedness and corneal ulcer, while children's problems will also be assessed. Those found to have cataract will be taken to Arvind Eye Hospital, Puducherry, the same day for free cataract surgery. They will be provided free transport facility to go to Puducherry, and free food and accommodation at the hospital. They will also be provided intra-ocular lens and medicines free of cost.

Durai Murugan, Law Minister, and S. Jagathrakshakan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, will inaugurate the camp. G. Viswanathan, VIT University Chancellor, will provide free spectacles, sponsored by the VIT University.

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithis in Vellore will be offering their voluntary services at the camp.

A total of 8,985 persons have so far participated in the annual camps conducted by the Vellore District Jaggery Merchants Charitable Trust from 2004, while eye surgery has been performed on 1,279 persons.

Eye donation campaign launched

VISAKHAPATNAM: Mohsin Eye Bank has launched a campaign to create awareness on eye donation.

The fortnight-long celebrations inaugurated on Tuesday by District Medical and Health Officer J. Sarojini would highlight on process of eye donation.

Regional Eye Hospital Superintendent M. Mohana Rao, Mohsin Eye Bank chairman Kasim S. Mehdi, noted ophthalmologists R. Ahikrishna, A.V.N. Chetty, C.V. Gopal Raju and others spoke.

Dr. Sarojini observed that the awareness level on eye donation was not much and underlined the need to educate all on a continuous basis.

During the fortnight, the bank's members would go to various schools, petrol bunks, colonies and tribal areas to educate on eye donation.

Mohsin Eye Bank set up eight years ago through Vebart Trust has collected 986 corneas including 240 during 2008-09.

It has entered into memorandum of understanding with King George Hospital, Apollo and other hospitals.

According to an estimate, the number of people with loss of vision in two eyes is 2.1 lakh and one is 7.86 lakh. There are about 9.82 lakh people with corneal blindness. Every year, this number is going up by 25,000 to 30,000.

As there is acute shortage of donor eyes, more people should pledge to donate their eyes after death so that the cornea transplant could be performed to help restore vision to many deserving people, bank's joint secretary A. Srirama Murthy said.

Eye donation awareness rally taken out

Chennai: The Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, the Rotary Club of Madras, T. Nagar, and Rajan Eye Care Hospital organised an eye donation awareness rally from Light House to Anna Square here on Saturday.

Actor Prashanth flagged off the rally, which was conducted as part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight celebrations.

Over 1,000 students from various institutions participated , stated a press release.

Apart from students, there were members of Rotary International, doctors and staff of Rajan Eye Care Hospital.

T.A. Shekar, former cricketer; Krishnan V. Chari, past district governor, Rotary International District 3230; Mohan Rajan, District Chairman Eye Care, Rotary International District 3230, were among those who participated.

Students take out rally to create awareness on eye donation

SALEM: A rally to create awareness among people on the importance of eye donation was taken out here on Tuesday.

The Vasan Eye Care Hospital in association with the Rotary Club of Salem Sun Star organised the rally to mark the Eye Donation Day.

Flagged off by Inspector General of Police and City Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Singh at the New Integrated Bus Stand, the rally passed through the Omalur Main Road and culminated near Anna Park.

A large number of students from various colleges, students from the school for the blind, doctors, hospital staff members and Rotarians participated in the rally.
Slogans

They raised slogans highlighting the importance of eye donation. A large number of people in the country were affected by corneal blindness.

The increase in the eye donations would enable the doctors to carry out more corneal transplants, they told the people.

Handbills carrying information on the eye donation were also distributed.
Pledge

Over 100 participants of the rally pledged to donate their eyes.

Eye camp organised

PERAMBALUR: A large number of men and women were screened for eye disorders during the two-day camp organised jointly by the Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital and Perambalur Panchayat Union for the benefit of the noon meal staff, cooks and assistants which concluded here on Tuesday.

Collector M. Vijayakumar visited the camp and made enquiries with the beneficiaries.

In a statement he said, similar camps for the noon meal staff, cooks and assistants will be held in Veppanthattai union office on May 5 and 6, Veppur union office on May 7 and 8 and in Alathur union office on May 10 and 11. He called upon the target groups to take advantage of the camp.
