Two more test H1N1-positive in city, Central team arrives



Chennai: Two more persons from Chennai have tested positive for the H1N1 flu, taking the total number of infected people in Tamil Nadu to 56, of which one patient — a fouryear-old boy — died last Monday.

    Kancheepuram collector Santosh K Misra told reporters that the two persons, one a resident of Nanganallur and the other from Medavakkam, tested positive for H1N1 virus and were rushed to the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet for treatment.

    Meanwhile, a team from the Union health ministry, comprising a deputy director and a chief medical officer, arrived in the city on Wednesday afternoon and visited the CDH where 15 H1N1 positive patients are undergoing treatment.

    The team then inspected the preparedness and precautionary measures followed by the staff and the Tamiflu stocks required for treatment at the CDH and expressed satisfaction, said city health officials. Accompanied by a team of public health officials, the team inspected the King Institute for Preventive Medicine and the government General Hospital as well.

    In Puducherry, at least seven persons have been admitted to the JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) with symptoms of the H1N1 flu. JIPMER director K S V K Subba Rao told TOI that the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) referred a middleaged man with symptoms of the flu on Tuesday night. He added that all the seven suspected H1N1 patients were admitted to isolation wards in the institute and were being closely monitored.

    PIMS director Dr James Gnandoss said an 18-year-old boy from Chennai, who had come to Puducherry to meet his relative studying in the institute, was diagnosed with symptoms of the flu and was referred to JIPMER.

Steps to Lesson the Spread of Flu in the Home


When providing care to a household member who is sick with influenza, the most important ways to protect yourself and others who are not sick are to:


· keep the sick person away from other people as much as possible (see "placement of the sick person")
· remind the sick person to cover their coughs, and clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub often, especially after coughing and/or sneezing.

· have everyone in the household clean their hands often, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub

Placement of the sick person:


· Keep the sick person in a room separate from the common areas of the house. (For example, a spare bedroom with its own bathroom, if that's possible.) Keep the sickroom door closed.

· Unless necessary for medical care, persons with the flu should not leave the home when they have a fever or during the time that they are most likely to spread their infection to others

· If persons with the flu need to leave the home (for example, for medical care), they should cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and wear a loose-fitting (surgical) mask if available.

· Have the sick person wear a surgical mask if they need to be in a common area of the house near other persons.

· If possible, sick persons should use a separate bathroom. This bathroom should be cleaned daily with household disinfectant

Protect other persons in the home:


· The sick person should not have visitors other than caregivers. A phone call is safer than a visit.
· If possible, have only one adult in the home take care of the sick person.

· Avoid having pregnant women care for the sick person. (Pregnant women are at increased risk of influenza-related complications and immunity can be suppressed during pregnancy).

· All persons in the household should clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub frequently, including after every contact with the sick person or the person's room or bathroom.

· Use paper towels for drying hands after hand washing or dedicate cloth towels to each person in the household. For example, have different colored towels for each person.

· If possible, consideration should be given to maintaining good ventilation in shared household areas (e.g., keeping windows open in restrooms, kitchen, bathroom, etc.).

If you are the caregiver:


· Avoid being face-to-face with the sick person. · When holding small children who are sick, place their chin on your shoulder so that they will not cough in your face. · Clean your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub after you touch the sick person or handle used tissues, or laundry. · Talk to your Doctor about taking antiviral medication to prevent the caregiver from getting the flu. · Monitor yourself and household members for flu symptoms and the local H1N1 Command Center if the symptoms occur.

Household Cleaning, Laundry, and Waste Disposal:


· Throw away tissues and other disposable items used by the sick person in the trash. Wash your hands after touching used tissues and similar waste. · Keep surfaces (especially bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, and toys for children) clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.

Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are sick do not need to be cleaned separately, but importantly these items should not be shared without washing thoroughly first. · Wash linens (such as bed sheets and towels) by using household laundry soap and tumble dry on a hot setting. Avoid "hugging" laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating yourself.

Clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub right after handling dirty laundry. · Eating utensils should be washed either in a dishwasher or by hand with water and soap.

Sickness Can Bring Pain As Well As Profit. A Look At Companies & Retailers Who Rake In Money When Epidemics Hit


Chennai: At a time when people are reeling under the fear of the flu, the old saying 'Where there is a will, there is a way' can also be interpreted as 'When there is a disease, there are big bucks' — for those in the business of medicine.

    Reaping in the moolah in the times of H1N1 are the business houses making and marketing Tamiflu, dealers of surgical face masks, chemists and of course, blackmarketeers. With reports of deaths pouring in due to the complications arising out of the flu, people have been flocking to designated hospitals to get themselves tested.
    The city is also beginning to run out of masks — or so claim the wholesellers and chemists, to jack up their prices. The prices of masks have shot up three-fold in the last four days, thanks to the growing awareness among people about precautions to be taken, which is also seeing a gradual but steady increase in the sale of disinfectants and hand-wash products across the city.

    Text messages are also floating around peddling dubious home remedies like using eucalyptus oil on handkerchiefs and masks, claiming that the tip came from the National institute of Virology. Other such measures being text-messaged around include the use of tulsi (basil) leaves with two black peppers — crushed together and swallowed.

    Here's a look at how one man's pain is another man's gain. Those raking in the big bucks in the time of the flu are:

Pharma companies

    Roche is raking it in big-time, but others aren't doing too badly either. Vitamins and paracetamols are in demand. Makers of anti-bacterial and alcoholic hand gels and wipes (for instance, Reckitt Benckiser) and suppliers of swine flu kits (like Religare) are running to keep up with demand. Ever since India's first recorded H1N1 death, Religare alone has sold over 200 kits worth Rs 500 each, a jump from the 700 that it sold over the last three months.

    With the Centre set to lift the ban on production and sale of the anti-H1N1 oseltamivir drug (by companies other than Roche, which has the licence for the Tamiflu brand), desi manufacturers like Cipla, Ranbaxy and Hetero Drugs are preparing to launch more affordable, generic versions of the drug.

    Cipla's joint managing director Amar Lulla told TOI: "In the past, the production of flu vaccines was almost unprofitable and most companies producing such vaccines had pulled out of the US. This time round the scene could be just the opposite. We are awaiting the government's call for local producers to supply the drug,'' Lulla told TOI.

    Ramesh Adige, president of Ranbaxy, said: "Ranbaxy produces the generic equivalent of Tamiflu, the API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) oseltamivir and formulations. If required, Ranbaxy can provide close to a million capsules in the next few weeks to the Indian market.

    Then, there's the stampede to develop a vaccine for swine flu (oseltamivir is curative while a vaccine would be proventive). Industry estimates suggest that multinationals in the fray for making the swine flu vaccine, like Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline, amongst a host of others, are expected to charge around $6 (approximately Rs 288) per dose although it shouldn't cost more than $1 (Rs 48) per dose to produce it. Pharma companies will tell you it costs billions to develop a vaccine.

    Chemists

    Chemists in Chennai are seeing a significant rise in the number of people coming to buy disinfectants like Dettol and other liquid handwash products, eucalyptus oil and vitamin tablets.

    In Mumbai, one of the worst H1N1 virushit cities in the country, there has been a surge in the sale of hand sanitisers, disposable tissues, alcohol based disinfectants and skin care wipes, a 'newly introduced'product. At many places in Mumbai, these products are out of stock.

    In Chennai, even though the situation is not as serious as in Mumbai and Pune, people are willing to pay higher prices to procure masks. Some of them are even buying dozens of masks and stocking them up. "We have had about 25-30 customers walking in to buy dozens of masks," a dealer on Anna Salai told The Times of India.

    "People have been buying handwash products in the last few days and also masks. We are trying to maintain a decent stock of masks, but the supply is not there," said a chemist in Velachery, the home of fouryear-old Sanjay Balakrishnan who succumbed to complications arising out of the influenza last Monday.

    There are also reports of masks being sold at exhorbitant prices in the black market. In the last 10 days alone, the prices of the masks have been steadily rising. "Wholesale dealers usually sell N95 masks for Rs 45 to Rs 75 apiece, and the disposable ones for Rs 3.50. But in the last few days, N95 masks were sold at pharmacies and even hospitals for Rs 100 to Rs 175, while the disposable variety cost anywhere between Rs 3 and Rs 15," a dealer said.

    "At the moment, we have a stock of regular face masks. There is a constant flow of people coming into buy disinfectants, handwash and face masks. We have not stocked up on N-95 masks as they are now being priced exhorbitantly. Only last week, they were being sold for Rs 25-30," said Radhakrishnan of Vasanth Medicals.

    "As of Wednesday, masks are being sold even to the chemists at Rs 300 per piece. We cannot charge that much from the consumer and lose our regular business, as it will look like as if we are taking advantage of this situation," he said

    But the government has already stepped in to prevent such blackmarketing of masks. Assistant health officers (AHOs) of the Chennai corporation have been directed to take severe action against the traders who sell surgical masks at higher prices.

This follows a high-level visit by a team of doctors from Ripon Buildings to Nainiappan Naickan Street on Broadway on Wednesday, who found that the wholesale surgical mask dealers were fleecing customers.

    "The AHOs may even go to an extent of cancelling trade licences to those shops, if the latter continue to sell masks at higher prices," Chennai Corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni told TOI.

    Taking a serious note of the violations, the public health wing of the Chennai Corporation has taken up the issue with the commercial taxes department to take stringent action against erring traders.

    People who have complaints of being fleeced by dealers can call the corporation's toll-free helpline number 1913.

    Even Indian websites about the H1N1 virus have witnessed heavy traffic in the last few days. People from Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Delhi are clicking away for information.

Sites with domain names dedicated to the flu in India like www.swinefluindia.com, and www.swinefluindia.org recorded the highest traffic on Tuesday. "We have seen an unprecedented growth in traffic on our site. We have received a lot of mails and our page rank on Google has improved drastically,'' said a spokesperson of swinefluindia.com.

Mumbai: As the Maharashtra government ordered all 1,400 schools across Mumbai to close down until August 19, Pune once again confirmed its status as the epicentre of the swine flu pandemic with five more fatalities on Wednesday, taking the city's toll to 11. Together with a death in Nashik, Maharashtra's toll rose to 14 — including two in Mumbai — out of a national total of 18.

    Compounding the loss of the lives is the double blow that Maharashtra's economy has been dealt. The spread of the swine flu and the worst drought in recent history in more than 24 districts have hit business in many parts of Maharashtra. A senior minister said that in seven districts, district central cooperative banks — the backbone of the rural economy — hadn't seen a single transaction in the last 15 days; things aren't much better in other parts of the state. The swine flu scare is also set to act as a dampener on retail and wholesale markets during the coming festive season.

    On Wednesday, the Maharashtra government asked all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to close from August 13 to 19 as a precautionary measure. Also, the state government appealed to malls in the city to go slow on Independence Day sales on grounds that they would attract big crowds.
    Coaching centres were also asked to call off lectures until next week.

Mumbai: Although malls in Mumbai will remain open for the next three days, the Maharashtra government has asked retail outlets, which were hoping to see a spurt in holiday sales, to avoid advertising the big sales and keep down crowds. Malls like the high-end Atria, with designer stores like Mango, Rolls-Royce and Nine West, have asked store managers to avoid big rush and try and ensure that customers keep a distance from each other.

    In New Delhi, seven new cases were reported, including that of a 14-year-old student of Delhi Public School, R K Puram. Three serious cases at RML hospital were responding to treatment, doctors said, adding that city transport minister Haroon Yusuf's sons, who were hit by the virus, had been shifted to home quarantine. The latest positive cases takes the total number of swine flu patients in the capital to 312.

    In a move to avoid treatment and detection bottlenecks, the Delhi government asked all hospitals with more than 200 beds to create 10-bed isolation wards within the next two weeks. Authorities also inspected Dr Dang's, Dr Lal's Pathlabs and SRL Labs ahead of likely accreditation for allowing them to test for H1N1. Tests are expected to cost between Rs 5,000-Rs 10,000.

Govt to set up hi-tech phone tapping centre

New Delhi: India will soon face far higher levels of phone surveillance, with the government set to take control of all phone and wire-tapping activities. Till now, tapping was carried out by the telecom operators. But a felt need for higher levels of secrecy in the backdrop of terror attacks has spurred the government to do away with multiple channels of surveillance and set up a centralized facility.

    According to DoT sources, the government is designing a monitoring facility at a cost upwards of Rs 800 crore, to be executed with help from the Centre for Development of Telematics.

Engg colleges in TN slash fee to fill up seats

Chennai: Faced with the prospect of empty benches in classrooms due to the supply of BE/BTech seats far exceeding the demand this year, several self-financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu have begun slashing the tuition fee to woo students under the management quota.

    Instead of the Rs 62,500 annual fee — fixed for management quota seats by a committee, headed by Justice N V Balasubramanian — the colleges are now willing to admit students for much less. Some are sending SMSes to mobile phone users informing them of their decision to slash the fee for students joining under the management quota.

"Join BE in a college near Chennai under management quota paying just Rs 50,000 per year," read one such SMS sent by a private college in Kancheepuram district. Other institutions were willing to admit students even for Rs 40,000 — the fee for a seat allotted under the government quota in a course recognised by the National Board for Accreditation.

    On Wednesday, when the curtains came down on Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (2009) for government quota seats, a whopping 30,550 seats in undergraduate courses remained vacant across all streams — academic, vocational and special quota seats. As many as 1,14,102 seats were on offer in 440 colleges (including 24 government, university and aided institutions) under the government quota this year, but only 83,552 were allotted.

    Private colleges now have the onerous task of filling these 30,550 "lapsed seats", in addition to approximately 35,000 seats earmarked under the management quota, before the September 4 deadline. Few takers for seats in new engg colleges

Chennai: Private engineering colleges have begun slashing tuition fees to woo students under the management quota.The September 4 deadline was fixed by the Directorate of Technical Education.Classes for first year students must commence on September 7, as per an earlier directive of Anna varsity.

    "The situation is particularly alarming in many of the 87 newly established private colleges, which have had few takers.More than 100 colleges could fill less than 50% of the government quota seats. Some colleges are also offering students the option of paying the fee in two halfyearly installments," an education consultant said.

    A few years ago some institutions had lowered their annual fees to Rs 20,000.

அதே கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த, ஆறுமுகம் மனைவி விஜயலெட்சுமி(45) என்பவருக்கு நேற்று காலை திடீரென்று காய்ச்சலுடன், வாந்திபேதி எடுத்துள்ளது. மயங்கி விழுந்த அவரை உறவினர்கள் மீட்டு புதுக்கோட்டை அரசு தலைமை மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்த்தனர். இவை பன்றிக் காய்ச்சல் குறித்த அப்பகுதி மக்களின் சந்தேகத்தை வலுப்படுத்தியது. திருச்சி: திருச்சி அரசு மருத்துவமனையில், ரயில்வே பாதுகாப்புப் படை வீரர் பதர்சிங், திருச்சியை சேர்ந்த ரயில்வே ஊழியர் விஜயன், ஜெயப்பிரகாஷ் ஆகியோர் பன்றிக் காய்ச்சல் அறிகுறி காரணமாக, அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டு சிகிச்சை பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.

பொதுப்பிரிவு மாணவர்கள் கவுன்சிலிங் நிறைவு: 31,210 இன்ஜினியரிங் 'சீட்'கள் காலி

பொதுப்பிரிவு மாணவர்களுக் கான பொறியியல் கவுன்சிலிங் முடிவில், 31 ஆயிரத்து 210 இடங்கள் காலியாக உள்ளன. ""பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளில் நிர்வாக ஒதுக்கீட்டு மாணவர் சேர்க்கையை செப்டம்பர் 4ம் தேதிக்குள் முடிக்க வேண்டும்,'' என, தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்வி கமிஷனர் ஜெயக்கொடி தெரிவித்தார்.


பொதுப்பிரிவு மாணவர்களுக்கான பொறியியல் கவுன்சிலிங், ஜூலை 10ம் தேதி முதல் சென்னை அண்ணா பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் நடந்து வந்தது. இக்கவுன்சிலிங் நேற்றுடன் முடிவடைந்தது. மொத்தம் ஒரு லட்சத்து 18 ஆயிரத்து 749 மாணவர்கள் கவுன்சிலிங்கிற்கு அழைக்கப் பட்டனர். இதில், 39 ஆயிரத்து 657 பேர் கவுன்சிலிங்கிற்கு வரவில்லை. கவுன்சிலிங்கிற்கு வந்தவர்களில் 421 பேர் "இடம் வேண்டாம்' என தெரிவித்தனர். ஏழு பேரின் விண்ணப்பங்கள் நிராகரிக்கப்பட்டன. பொதுப்பிரிவு கவுன்சிலிங்கின் முடிவில், 78 ஆயிரத்து 664 மாணவர்களுக்கு இடம் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டது.


அண்ணா பல்கலைக் கழக துறைகள் மற்றும் பல்கலைக் கழக கல்லூரிகளில் 5,715 பேர், அரசு மற்றும் அரசு உதவிபெறும் கல்லூரிகளில் 4,291 பேர், தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் 68 ஆயிரத்து 658 பேருக்கு இடம் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பொதுப்பிரிவு மாணவர்களுக்கான பொறியியல் கவுன்சிலிங்கில், கடைசியாக இடத்தைத் தேர்வு செய்த அஸ்வினி என்ற மாணவிக்கு, தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்வி கமிஷனர் ஜெயக்கொடி சேர்க்கை ஆணையை வழங்கினார். அவர் கூறுகையில், ""பொறியியல் கவுன்சிலிங்கின் முடிவில் காலியாக உள்ள இடங்களை, தனியார் கல்லூரிகள் நிர்வாக ஒதுக்கீட்டில் நிரப்பிக்கொள்ளலாம்.


இந்த மாணவர் சேர்க்கையை செப்டம்பர் 4ம் தேதிக்குள் முடிக்க வேண்டும்,'' என்றார். சென்னை அண்ணா பல்கலைக் கழக துணைவேந்தர் மன்னர் ஜவகர் கூறியதாவது: இந்த ஆண்டு 92 புதிய கல்லூரிகள் உட்பட,மொத்தம் 440 பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகள் உள்ளன. பி.ஆர்க்., படிப்பு வழங்கும் ஆறு கல்லூரிகளையும் சேர்த்து மொத்தம் 446 கல்லூரிகள் உள்ளன. இதில்,மொத்தம் ஒரு லட்சத்து 26 ஆயிரத்து 819 பேர் விண்ணப்பித்திருந்தனர். இதில் 82 ஆயிரத்து 496 பேருக்கு இடங்கள் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதில், 51 ஆயிரத்து 351 பேர் ஆண்கள்; 31 ஆயிரத்து 145 பேர் பெண்கள். பொதுப்பிரிவில் மட்டும் ஒரு லட்சத்து 18 ஆயிரத்து 594 பேர் விண்ணப்பித்திருந்தனர்.


இதில், 78 ஆயிரத்து 664 பேருக்கு இடங்கள் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதில், 47 ஆயிரத்து 808 பேர் ஆண்கள், 30 ஆயிரத்து 856 பேர் பெண்கள். அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டில், 26 கல்லூரிகளில் 100 சதவீத இடங்கள் நிரம்பியுள்ளன; 32 கல்லூரிகளில் 20 சதவீதத்திற்கும் குறைவான இடங்கள் நிரம்பியுள்ளன. ஆறு கல்லூரிகளில் 10 சதவீதத்திற்கும் குறைவான இடங்க ளே நிரம்பியுள்ளன. இவ்வாறு மன்னர் ஜவகர் கூறினார். பிளஸ் 2 உடனடித் தேர்வெழுதி, பொறியியல் படிப்பில் சேர தகுதி பெற்றவர்களுக்கான பொறியியல் துணை கவுன்சிலிங் இன்று நடக்கிறது. இதற்கு 880 பேர் அழைக்கப்படவுள்ளனர்.


கவுன்சிலிங்கின் முடிவில் அருந்ததியினர் பிரிவில் 2,279 இடங்கள் காலியாக உள்ளன. இந்த இடங்கள், விருப்பமுள்ள எஸ்.சி., மாணவர்களுக்கு ஒதுக்கப்படவுள்ளன. இதற்கான கவுன்சிலிங் நாளை நடக்கிறது.

Endhiran is ready, says Rajini

Endhiran is ready, says Rajini Superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday said 85 per cent of the shoot of his magnum opus Endhiran was over. 'Working with Shankar in Sivaji and Endhiran is a delight.

I have discovered a close friend in him,' he said while talking at the audio launch of Eeram, a film directed by debutant Arivazhagan and produced by Shankar.

Pointing out that he hardly chose to attend public functions after started working in Endhiran, Rajini said he however had no other
option than accepting the invitation extended by Shankar to attend the audio launch of Eeram. 'Because, Shankar is my best friend.' Rajini also uttered some words of wisdom in his typical style.

'Hard physical labour along with smartness and efficiency will always fetch success,' he said.

Sasikumar of Subramniapuram and Nadodigal fame received the first copy of Eeram audio, released by Rajini. In his address, Shankar thanked Rajini for attending the function and hailed Sasi for setting a new trend in Tamil cinema. Others who spoke include Tamil Film Producers Council president Rama Narayanan, Distributor Association president Kalaipuli G Sekaran, lyricist Viveka and director Vasantha Balan.

Kanthaswamy, directed by Susi Ganesan starring Vikram and Shriya in the lead, will hit the screens on 21 August.

Circles close to producer Kalaipuli S Thanu confirmed this saying all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure that the film would see the light of the day on 21 August.

A 35-year-old ayurvedic doctor and a four-year-old boy died of swine flu in Pune and Chennai today, taking the toll due to the dreaded viral infection in the country to six.
     
The medic, Babasahib Mane, died in the Sassoon Hospital in Pune this morning, becoming the third person in the worst-hit Maharashtra city to succumb to swine flu, a senior health official said.

Mane was ailing for sometime and blood had been found in his sputum in the last couple of days, he said. In Chennai, a four-year-old boy, who was admitted to a private hospital with kidney and liver-related complications
and had tested positive for swine flu, died this morning, health officials said. The boy had also been suffering from asthma. This is the first case of flu death in the city.
     
The boy was in a very critical condition. He had been suffering from asthma and he had been taken from one hospital to another for various complications. Ultimately he landed up in this hospital for a kidney-related problem...and they found the boy testing positive (for swine flu)," Tamil Nadu Health Secretary V K Subburaj said.
     
The boy, who was on a ventilator, died following multi- organ failure S Ilango, Director of Public Health, said. With the two deaths today, the swine flu toll in the country has climbed to six.

Pvt school declare week long holiday for primary section
   
A private school in the city today declared a week-long holiday for its primary wing as a precautionary measure following the steps adopted by schools in Pune, where the disease claimed a 14-year-old girl's life.
   
Sources said some schools here have asked parents to take their wards home if the children are found suffering from cough, cold or fever.
   
Karnataka has so far recorded about 85 confirmed cases of swine flu.

First swine flu case in Thane; schools shut
   
A six-year-old girl from the district has been admitted to a suburban hospital in Mumbai after she tested positive for swine flu, civic officials said today.
   
Pranita Kulkarni, a student of A K Joshi English School, was admitted to Kasturbha hospital last night after she showed flu like symptoms, they said adding her test reports later confirmed flu.
   
Following Kulkarni's admission, all the educational institutes in the district have announced a week's closure, sources said. Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has swung into action to take preventive measures against the viral infection.
