Honor announces partnership with IMAX, teases circular camera island for Magic 3

The Honor Magic 3 smartphone is expected to arrive on August 12 and will have a Snapdragon 888+ chipset. The brand has now announced a partnership with IMAX Enhanced on its Weibo page, where an image of a film reel was posted which looks a lot like a circular camera setup, similar to what we've already seen in previous leaks.

IMAX Enhanced is the product of joint work between IMAX, the proprietary system of high-res cameras, film formats, film projectors and theaters, and DTS, an American audio company. The Enhanced project essentially brings IMAX capabilities to consumers' living rooms.

Up until now, IMAX Enhanced has been available only to a limited number of TVs, projectors and AVRs. It is a format that allows 4K HDR content with DTS audio to be played on HDR10+ displays, meaning the Honor Magic 3 will be the first smartphone to offer this unique video experience.

Watch the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4, Mi Pad 5 launch live

Xiaomi is about to introduce its Mi Mix 4 flagship smartphone and Mi Pad 5 tablet. Both devices are bound to be flagship-tier, with the phone being the first in the world with Snapdragon 888+, while the tablet is aiming to be a direct competitor to the Galaxy Tab S7 series and the latest iPad Pro 11. The event is scheduled for 19:30 Beijing Time, which is 11:30 GMT.

The event is taking place in China, so logically it will be in Chinese. This is also the first market to get the new device but hopefully the international rollout won't take long.

We've embedded the video below but if you can't play it, we've provided a link at the end of this article.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 might be first in the world with the latest Qualcomm SoC and it's going to be the first Xiaomi phone with a selfie camera mounted under the display.

The Mi Pad 5 is going to be the first Xiaomi tablet in three years. It will come with a keyboard cover and will support a stylus, and we should expect vanilla and Pro variants, with the latter being 5G-enabled, while the former is the Wi-Fi only version. There are also rumors about a Lite option and a Redmi slate, but for now they are mostly unsubstantiated, so we won't hold our breath for seeing them at this event.

Specs-wise, we expect to see 10.9" IPS LCD, an 8,750 mAh battery with 67W charging and a Snapdragon 870 chipset.

Ather opens its proprietary fast-charging connector to rival electric scooters

Ather Energy has more than 200 fast chargers across the country and is looking to add to these numbers.

Ather Energy on Tuesday informed that it has opened it proprietary fast-charging connector to electric scooters from rival brands in a bid to promote quicker EV adoption in India. With range anxiety one of the biggest stumbling blocks for those who may consider an EV, more charging infrastructure is likely to play a big role in calming frayed nerves.

While government established charging stations are open to all EVs, those established by a manufacturer may only be for EVs from its own brand. A few now have started opening their respective facilities to all with Ather becoming the latest. "Sharing our proprietary charging connector is a big step for having a common connector and hence interoperable chargers for all two-wheelers," said Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO at Ather Energy. "At this stage of the category, the industry needs these collaborations and we are already in talks with some OEMs to take this industry collaboration forward."

Collaboration - and not competition - may be the way forward indeed as India's EV-charging infrastructure is still less than ideal. While various subsidies have brought prices of electric two-wheelers down significantly, multiple charge locations in at least big cities could further accelerate EV adoption. And fast-charging could be a bonus.

Ather says that its proprietary fast-charging connector has a combo AC and DC charging. "This connector size has been designed to be suitable for integration into two-wheelers and three-wheelers with the ability of CAN 2.0 communication with control and proximity pilot," the company informs.

There are currently more than 200 fast chargers from Ather Energy in the country and the Hosur-based company is looking at adding on to these numbers in the times to come.

Pawan Munjal showcases Hero MotoCorp's upcoming electric scooter

Pawan Munjal, Chairman of Hero MotoCorp, was seen standing next to the new electric scooter, which will be launched soon for the Indian market, during the two-wheeler manufacturer's tenth anniversary celebrations.

Hero MotoCorp has showcased the first look at its upcoming electric scooter. The world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, which celebrated its tenth anniversary on Monday, seems ready to bring in its first electric model for the Indian market soon.

Pawan Munjal, Chairman of Hero MotoCorp, was seen standing next to the new electric scooter during the company's livestream event of its ten-year celebrations.

The design of the electric scooter in the version shown in the teaser appears quite sleek. It gets a curved body design with the combination of white and black colours, flyscreen, and a long seat that appears spacious enough to accommodate two easily. The electric scooter also gets a 12 inch wheel on the front and a 10 inch wheel on the back.

Hero MotoCorp or Pawan Munjal did not share much detail about the upcoming electric scooter. However, during the event, Munjal said that it is expected to be unveiled soon.

In April this year, Hero MotoCorp had signed an agreement with Taiwanese company Gogoro to share battery swap and technology features. The design of the new electric scooter does not reflect what Gogoro offers. Instead there are certain elements, like the single-sided swingarm, which has similarities with the Bajaj Chetak.

Hero MotoCorp's latest teaser comes only days before one of the most anticipated electric two-wheeler launch from Ola Electric. Besides Ola, Hero's new electric scooter will compete with Bajaj Chetak electric, Ather 450X and TVS iQube among others when launched.

The Hero MotoCorp electric scooter is likely to go on sale later this year or early next year.

Back to the future: 50 years on, Lamborghini Countach all set for fresh innings

If you were born in the 1970s, 1980s or even the 1990s, chances are that your room at some point had a poster showcasing what is still regarded as one of the most stylish sports cars ever manufactured and sold. A timeless piece of automotive art, the Lamborghini Countach set pulses racing and even today, evokes a fond memory. But put memories aside for a moment because a new Lamborghini Countach is all set to be unveiled to the world, 50 years after it was first showcased and sold across the world.

Lamborghini Countach LP 500 was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show some 50 years ago. Styled by Marcello Gandini, it was a sports car far ahead of its times. It went into production in 1974 and there was just no looking back as the world got divided between those who owned it and those who desired to own or at least drive it.

(Also read: Lamborghini Countach LP 500 turns 50 years old. Still looks 50 years young)

There may yet be a chance in the offing, assuming one can afford whatever price tag comes along with the new Lamborghini Countach.

Lamborghini dropped an official teaser on Monday and the 21-second video was enough to get tongues wagging. "The new Lamborghini Countach is coming," was the simple text accompanying the video.

Since this was just a very short teaser image, nothing much is known about what the new Lamborghini Countach will be all about. The rebirth of an iconic model may be an exciting prospect but it also carries the risk of living up to the glitzy reputation of its predecessor. Some feel it could be an all electric vehicle considering Lamborghini has already confirmed its plans to have such a model on offer by the middle of this decade. Others still feel that it may well be a concept sports car.

Either or any other option would still ensure that memories come gushing back as Lamborghini Countach gets ready for a rebirth.

Car impounded in Delhi? You may not have to pay charges to recover it

Delhi government announced that impounded vehicles won't be slapped with custody charges till September 30. This decision has been taken in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Custody charges in Delhi can range up to ₹1,500 per day, depending on type of vehicle.

Delhi government has announced a waiver of custody charges on vehicles impounded by the traffic police and transport department, which have not been bailed out by their owners. The relaxation will be effective till September 30 this year. It comes as relief for the owners whose vehicles may have been impounded and are still awaiting to be recovered.

Delhi government has said that this decision has been taken in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic. "As per an advisory issued by the government of India on June 17, parking/custody charges imposed under Rule 16 of Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Rules 2019 are waived off," the order reads.

This is not the first time the Delhi government has ordered such a relaxation. Last year too, it ordered a similar relaxation for vehicle owners who were affected by Covid restrictions.

Vehicles impounded in Delhi by any government agency for violating rules are slapped with custody charges if their owners don't get the vehicles released within 48 hours. Custody charges can range between ₹200 and ₹1,500 per day, depending on the type of vehicle. Delhi transport department keeps hundreds of impounded vehicles at locations such as Burari, Dwarka and Sarai Kale Khan.

This also comes in line with the June order of the union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), which suggested an extension of validity for various motor vehicle documents till September 30. These included documents such as driving license, fitness test certificate, vehicle registration certificate etc. Many vehicle owners couldn't renew these documents due to lockdown and other Covid-related restrictions. MoRTH proposed the extension to give them relief.

Delhi transport officials told news agency PTI that many vehicle owners couldn't get their impounded vehicles recovered due to the pandemic related restrictions. This resulted in accumulated custody charges. PTI also reports that one vehicle has accumulated a custody charge of ₹2 lakh.

Tesla's most-affordable electric car inches closer to production in China

Tesla's upcoming $25,000 (less than ₹20 lakh) electric hatchback will be manufactured in China, where the EV-maker's first R&D Centre outside US nears completion.

Tesla is soon likely to start manufacturing its most-affordable electric car yet. According to reports, the facility where it is to be manufactured is almost ready to start operations. The electric vehicle, which will cost around $25,000 (roghly converted to ₹18.60 lakh), is expected to go for trial production by the end of this year.

During Tesla's Battery Day this year, CEO Elon Musk had said, "Tesla will make a compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that is also fully autonomous." Musk had said that Tesla's new battery cell and battery manufacturing will help keep the cost of the electric car cost half the price it would have otherwise.

The facility is being set up in Shanghai in China and will be Tesla's first R&D Centre to come up outside its home turf United States. The facility will focus on vehicle design, vehicle software, hardware design engineering, material engineering, powertrain and energy engineering, R&D engineering operation, and vehicle engineering. Tesla is currently looking for people to work at the facility.

Tom Zhu, President of Tesla China, said, "The centre is in Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai, where we are now. We are now building our China R&D centre right here. This R&D centre is also the first Tesla R&D centre outside the United States...In the future, we want to design, develop and produce an original model in China, manufactured here and sold to the whole world. This R&D centre is the starting point of the goal."

The affordable and compact electric car from Tesla began taking form last year when the EV manufacturer had started taking design submissions.

Tesla has been planning to manufacture the compact electric car, most likely to resemble a hatchback, at its Gigafactory in Shanghai. The car will be built initially for the Chinese markets, but may be sold globally later on. This does not rule out the chances of Tesla bringing this electric car to India, where it aims to start operations soon.

Tesla currently is in talks with the Centre to reduce import duty taxes before it starts selling its vehicles in India. According to a Reuters report on Monday, Tesla proposal to reduce the import duties to about 40 per cent is likely to be considered by the government. Tesla is yet to announce its plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India yet, which could keep the costs of its electric cars down.

Warren Buffett calls it right on EV batteries

The Sage of Omaha's Berkshire Hathaway bet on China's BYD looks like it's paying off. It's all about the technology.

Warren Buffett gets lots of investments right with his patient and deliberate buy-and-hold strategy. And it's becoming apparent that he's doing it again with electric vehicles. For investors pouring money into the technology, it would be wise to consider how the Sage of Omaha has looked into the future of the sector.

The value of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s holdings in BYD Co. Ltd., one of China's oldest makers of cars and automotive batteries, has skyrocketed this year: BYD's share price is up almost 30%. Buffett has backed BYD for over a decade, holding around 22% in the Hong Kong-listed company, which now sits on a market capitalization of over HK$915.6 billion ($117.6 billion). That's more than investor darling Nio Inc., the new-generation Chinese automaker listed in New York.

So how is that different from the rest of the EV universe, which just keeps on surging? BYD is more than just another upstart trying to take on Tesla Inc. It is getting closer to mastering the right technology for EV batteries -- the core of the electric car that accounts for almost 50% of the price and is crucial to widespread EV adoption. And that's what Berkshire has honed in on.

Longtime Buffett partner Charlie Munger had spotted the genius of Wang Chuanfu, the chemist and researcher behind BYD, leading to Berkshire taking a 10% stake for around $230 million in the company in 2008. In a 2009 Fortune magazine cover story, Munger described Wang as "a combination of Thomas Edison and [General Electric's] Jack Welch -- something like Edison in solving technical problems, and something like Welch in getting done what he needs to do. I have never seen anything like it."

That's turned out to be quite a prescient call. Wang understands batteries: Getting the chemistry right would determine how well cars equipped with these powertrains would and could do. It's given his company a leg-up as the rest of the sector stumbles through recalls and battery fires.

BYD electric cars are clunky and don't carry the techy-coolness of new generation cars like Nio Inc.'s or Tesla's Model X with its falcon wing doors. But it does have the right price and safe battery technology. It's now China's largest EV maker, selling more cars than the competition in the mainland.

BYD has doubled down on making affordable batteries at scale -- and has bet on the technology to achieve that goal. At its 2020 annual results, the company said it would stop plans for nickel-cobalt-manganese battery adoption, which most car and battery makers are set on. Instead, BYD has turned all its attention to so-called lithium iron phosphate, or LFPs, for its so-called Blade battery, which was released early last year.

Transport minister Nitin Gadkari has said that his ministry has put together a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety.
The strategy is based on four factors - Education, Engineering of both roads and vehicles, Enforcement and Emergency Care.

A total of 3,564 road accidents took place in the country due to potholes in the year 2020, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Parliament. The accidents have been reported to be the lowest in then last five years. The total number of road accidents due to potholes in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 were 6,424, 9,423, 4,869 and 4,775 respectively.

Gadkari added that his ministry has put together a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on four factors - Education, Engineering of both roads and vehicles, Enforcement and Emergency Care.

Elaborating on the total number of accidents that took place in the year 2019, Gadkari said that the figures have declined by 4 per cent to 4,49,002. Of these, overspeeding caused 3,19,028 mishaps while drunken driving/consumption of alcohol and drugs caused 12,256. The number of accidents due to driving on wrong side/ lane indiscipline, jumping red light and use of mobile phone in 2019 stood at 24,431; 4,443 and 10,522, respectively.

This is how GMC Hummer EV could have looked like

The design image reveals Hummer EV in a different avatar with unusual tailgate, taillights and rear bumper.

General Motors has revived its iconic Hummer in a new avatar. This time, it is powered by an all-electric powertrain instead of a mammoth internal combustion engine. The US automobile giant took Instagram to reveal a design iteration of the Hummer EV.

The design reveals an intriguing ideation sketch created during the Hummer EV electric pickup truck's development phase. This image shows how different the EV could have looked. The design image reveals it in a much sharper look than the original model.

The roof, doors and side windows of the image are similar to the production model. Two large tow hooks are visible in the image available in the production model as well. But the concept gets smaller and sharper taillights. Instead of a large unit, the taillight cluster is formed with six small LED blocks. Tailgate and rear bumper of the EV too look very different in the design image.

The front profile and cabin of the proposed concept have not been revealed in the social post. But, it was surely as radical as the rear profile. Side profile of the concept too looks very sculpted and muscular with flared wheel arches, large chunky tyres. Overall, the design image looks very bold but not as aggressive as the production model.

General Motors has already revealed the Hummer EV and grabbed attention from across the world. This all-electric pickup truck is going to be one of the most exciting. The automaker will first launch the Edition 1 of Hummer EV. It gets power from a three electric motor system.

The powertrain is claimed to be capable of churning out 1,000 hp power and 15,592 Nm of massive torque output. Despite being such a mammoth-sized vehicle, it can accelerate to 0-96 km in 3 seconds.

ATM installed at Shillong hospital where its inventor was born nearly a century ago

The historic Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Shillong, which will cross a century next year, got an automated teller machine (ATM) installed at its premises this Saturday--thanks to the State Bank of India.

But authorities of both the bank and the hospital forgot about John Adrian Shepherd Barron, the inventor of the ATM machine, who was born in the same hospital almost a century ago.

Inaugurating the ATM, Ramesh RS, the Chief General Manager (Northeast Circle) of SBI told the small gathering, "On behalf of SBI, we are really delighted to have this opportunity to have an ATM in this iconic hospital, which has completed almost 100 by its hospital for the yeomen service to the people of Meghalaya and neighbouring states since time immemorial and now, especially amidst the greatest health challenge mankind has ever had to face; the life consuming Covid-19 pandemic.

The small but meaningful gathering was attended by the bank's Deputy General Manager Amit Kumar and other officers while the hospital was represented by its Medical Superintendent, Dr Roken Nongrum.

John Adrian Shepherd Barron was born at the Gordon Robert Hospital in Shillong on June 23, 1925; about three years after the hospital came into existence. His father was Wilfred Shepherd Barron, the Chief Engineer of the Chittagong Port Commissionerate and his mother was Dorothy, an Olympic tennis player and a Wimbledon Women's Doubles champion.

The Shillong-born British innovator had joined De La Rue a British company headquartered in Basingstoke, England that manufactures polymer and security printed products including banknotes and tax stamps in the 1950s as a management trainee and swiftly rose the ranks to become the Managing Director in record time.

Galvanised by chocolate vending machines, he conceived what at that point of time surely sounded ridiculous, the idea of cash vending machines as well. Interestingly, the 'Eureka' bolt of creating a self-service machine dispensing cash came to him whilst lying in the bath.

The first De La Rue Automatic Cash System (DACS) machine, called Barclaycash, was installed outside the Enfield branch of Barclays Bank in north London in June 1967. And, the first person to withdraw cash at the DACS machine was actor Reg Varney, a celebrity resident of Enfield.

Now, life without ATMs is almost impossible for all kinds of financial transactions across the globe.

Though there is no record of the British innovator leaving Shillong, it is apparent that the family left after his Scottish father took over as the Chief Engineer of the Port of London Authority.

John Adrian Shepherd Barron was educated at Stowe School, the University of Edinburgh and Trinity College, Cambridge. During World War II, he was commissioned into the Airborne Forces, serving with the 159th Parachute Light Regiment.

Proper thermal screening should be done on the school gate to make sure that if any student or teacher or other school staff shows symptoms of cough, cold, or fever, they will not be allowed to enter the school. The Head of the school or department will make sure that the guidelines related to social distancing and Covid protocols should be followed, the directive added.

Online Classes/Digital Distance Learning will continue and those students who wish to continue their studies through Online Classes shall be allowed to do so, said the Education department.

Earlier on July 28, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had asked for feedback from parents, students, teachers, and principals for a decision on reopening educational institutions in the national capital and both students and parents suggested that school should be reopened.

After a ravaging Covid wave in April-May, Delhi has been witnessing a downward trend in cases.

Canada extends ban on direct passenger flights from India until September 21

The prohibition was scheduled to expire on August 21, making the latest move the fifth extension of the ban since it was first imposed on April 22 - at that time due to fears in Canada over the devastating second wave of the pandemic in India

Canada has, for the fifth time now, extended its ban on direct commercial and private flights from India until at least September 21 due to concerns over the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus.

The prohibition was scheduled to expire on August 21, making the latest move the fifth extension of the ban since it was first imposed on April 22 - at that time due to fears in Canada over the devastating second wave of the pandemic in India.

The latest extension of the ban was announced by Transport Canada just as entry for fully vaccinated US citizens and permanent residents was relaxed on Monday, despite America currently recording over 100,000 new daily coronavirus cases.

Transport Canada said the decision on travel from India was based "on the latest public health advice from the Public Health Agency of Canada".

It said the Canadian government "continues to closely monitor the epidemiological situation, and will be working closely with the government of India and aviation operators to ensure appropriate procedures are put in place to enable a safe return of direct flights as soon as conditions permit".

Transport Canada also extended the requirement related to third-country pre-departure Covid-19 molecular tests for travellers to Canada from India via an indirect route.

"This means passengers who depart India for Canada via an indirect route will continue to be required to obtain a valid Covid-19 pre-departure test from a third country - other than India - before continuing their journey to Canada," Transport Canada said.

On the other hand, Canada is introducing a slew of measures relaxing travel restrictions to the country. On September 7, if the situation remains under control, Canada has decided it will open its borders to travellers who are fully vaccinated with Ottawa-approved anti-Covid shots at least 14 days before entering Canada and those who meet all the entry requirements.

As of Monday, fully vaccinated travellers to Canada do not require a post-arrival test, while those not fully vaccinated, unvaccinated or vaccinated with jabs not recognised by Canadian health authorities, will be tested upon arrival.

It also eliminated its mandatory three-day quarantine requirement at a designated hotel while awaiting results of the test.

Vaccinated travellers will be exempted from any requirement for quarantine, but others will have to provide a quarantine plan.

The vaccines authorised for emergency use in Canada are those made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca - marketed in India as Covishield - and Johnson & Johnson.

Watch: This stripped-down Lamborghini Huracan will give you post-doomsday vibe

The modified Lamborghini Huracan comes powered by a LS V8 engine.
The Lamborghini Huracan will run at Mint 400 racing event in December 2021.

We have seen plenty of post-apocalyptic sci-fi movies and the majority of them featured several uniquely design high-performance vehicles. Here is a real-life example that will give you a similar kind of vibe. What's more interesting is this is based on a Lamborghini Huracan.

The specific Lamborghini Huracan we are talking about is a stripped-down model that looks wild. Powered by an LS V8 engine the wrecked Lambo has been modified by B Is For Build, a customisation group. As the modifier claims, this Lamborghini Huracan has been revived from scrap and given a new lease of life. They call it Jumpacan. The rugged-looking Lamborghini comes as a desert racer. It gets a bare front profile with the bonnet, bumper everything stripped down to nothing. The custom tube subframes along with the front and rear off-road-focused high-travel suspension set up grab attention at the very first glimpse. It looks ready for dune bashing in a desert at high speed.

The cabin of this plush luxury high-performance coupe is not recognizable as a Lamborghini one. The modifiers have stripped down this car's cockpit to the bare minimum. It gets a simple and sturdy sporty steering wheel, a metallic gear shifter, a large-tab like display with some switches below that.

The modified Lambo gets a new roll-cage, large and meaty off-road-spec tyres. The rear shows the engine mount and exhausts without any cover.

This Lamborghini will run at the Mint 400 event in December this year. The event is not something like Baja or Mexican 1000. But it surely will throw a whole lot of challenges to the Lamborghini. Mint 400 challenges the drivers and their respective vehicles with a 100-mile loop that has to be covered four times.

Surely, the event is not meant for a typical Lamborghini. But remember that Jumpacan is not a typical Italian luxury supercar. It is being ready for the final task through some mock test drives in the silty and andy desert region.

Nissan Motor sees return to annual profit despite chip shortage

Nissan's global sales have been boosted by recovering demand for cars in recent months and its newly released models are tracking well.
The company is sticking to its previous outlook on the chip shortage's impact on production.

Nissan Motor Co. forecast a return to annual profit for the first time in three years, reflecting the Japanese automaker's confidence that it can recover from chip shortage-related production cuts.

Operating profit for the fiscal year through March will now be 150 billion yen ($1.4 billion), up from its previous forecast to break even and topping analysts' projection for a profit of 94 billion yen. For the recent April-June quarter, the Yokohama-based carmaker reported a 76 billion yen operating profit, instead of the loss predicted by analysts.

Nissan's global sales have been boosted by recovering demand for cars in recent months and its newly released models are tracking well. Unit sales "increased sharply" in the recently ended quarter, with significant contribution from new models, Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta said at a briefing Wednesday.

Nissan shares are up 6% this year, after climbing on Wednesday ahead of the results. The stock fell 12% in 2020.

Earlier this year, Nissan warned that it is expecting to lose about 500,000 units of production this fiscal year due to the semiconductor shortage, largely in the first half. Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said in a recent interview with Bloomberg Television that the automaker is seeking to recover "half and more" of that lost production by working on inventory levels and production schedules.

Nissan is sticking to its previous outlook on the chip shortage's impact on production, Uchida said Wednesday, adding that output will be hit hardest in the current quarter. Rising raw material prices are also a significant business risk going forward, according to the company.

With regard to semiconductor procurement, many automakers are doing better than they were a few months ago, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Tatsuo Yoshida. Plans Nissan made earlier this year incorporated considerable risk factors and after this quarter, profit conditions "should shift in a slightly more positive direction," Yoshida said.

Uchida said he saw "encouraging changes" in Nissan's performance following the recently ended quarter. Today "we're a bit above the water level."

Samsung announces One UI 4.0 beta (based on Android 12), Galaxy S21 trio is getting it first

The rumors were true - there is no One UI 3.5, Samsung is jumping straight to version 4.0. It is based on Android 12 and the company is already recruiting beta testers to try it out.

Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra owners are invited to sign up for the beta program, which will go live soon. Unfortunately, for now it is only open to users in South Korea. Note: both SIM-free phones and those bought from carriers can participate.

There's no set date for the start of the One UI 4.0 beta program yet. How long will it take to go from beta to stable? You never know with these things as it depends on how many issues are uncovered.

But taking the Note 20 series as an example, One UI 3.0 open beta started in late October and the stable update was rolled out in mid-December. One UI 3.0 brought Android 11, so it was a similarly major update (the recent 3.1 was smaller). If you need a refresher, here is Samsung's update policy - select phones will get 3 OS updates and four year sof security patches.

Signing up for the beta program and news on the progress will go through the Samsung Members app.

ZTE Axon 30 breaks cover in hands-on videos

Rumors and leaks about ZTE's Axon 30 keep pilling on ahead of the phone's announcement date scheduled for July 27. Today we have a pair of short hands-on videos of the Axon 30 showing off its design and the second-gen in-display camera.

The first video shows the phone's front and back design and gives plenty of attention to the hidden selfie camera. There's a quick comparison to the outgoing Axon 20 and we can clearly see the progress in terms of display sharpness especially in the area above of the camera which is rumored to sport a 16MP sensor. The area remains indistinguishable from the rest of the panel even in close-ups which is quite impressive. A while back ZTE teased Axon 30 will sport 400ppi above the camera area which is double of its predecessor.

The clip also shows out a few selfie samples which don't impress with their quality and sharpness. We can also see proof that the phone will sport a 2460x1080-pixel resolution, Snapdragon 870 chipset and 256GB of storage.

The second video showcases the Axon 30's camera capabilities. We can spot four shooters on the back with the main one coming in at 64MP. Details coming in from the main shooter look quite sharp and having the whole screen as an uninterrupted viewfinder is certainly appealing. The post also shows a few selfie samples which again look a bit fogged up and are in general not that impressive.

In related news, tipster Digital Chat Station shared a few product photos and specs for the Axon 30. The phone is said to weigh in at 189 grams and will be just 7.8mm thick. We can see the back design brings a big departure from the look on the Axon 20 with sharp lines and a rectangular camera cutout with two circular openings housing the four camera sensors.

One of the shots also shows the About phone section which shows the phone running MyOS 11 on top of Android 11 alongside 12GB RAM.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and Z Fold3 5G will be IPX8 rated

Yet another insider report points to the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Z Flip3 5G being water resistant. According to Max Weinbach the pair will be IPX8 rated.

That means that they'll be able to withstand water depths of more than 1 meter for over 30 minutes.

If true, and it's looking like it, the pair will be the first water-tight foldables in the world. Yet dust can also be a bane for foldables and their hinges in particular so it could prove more important for them to have dust protection, than water. It's unclear if they are lacking that or the tipster just doesn't have information about it at this point, though.

Foldables have a flexible screen and a hinge, both of which move and make sealing the device harder than your regular bar phone. Still, adding water protection is massively impressive on Samsung's part.

Google Maps now lets you avoid crowded mass transit in 100 countries

Back in June 2019, Google introduced the transit crowdedness estimates on its Maps that lets you avoid crowds in buses, trains, or the subway. That feature was initially available in 200 cities around the globe and now, Google is expanding it to over 10,000 transit agencies in 100 countries, helping more people find open seats in mass transit or avoid it if it's jam-packed and wait for another train because social distancing is important during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Google says these predictions are made using its AI technology, contributions from Google Maps users, and historical location trends through the Location History data, which is kept private using anonymization technology.

The Internet search giant also announced that it's testing live crowdedness predictions in New York and Sydney, allowing you to see how crowded an individual transit car is. The data for this feature is provided by transit agencies Long Island Rail Road and Transport for New South Wales, and the feature will be rolled out in more cities soon.

Google also introduced a new Insights tab for Google Maps users on Android, which can be accessed from your Timeline if you've turned on Location History. As evident from its name, the Insights tab will provide data about which modes of transportation you've used and the distance and time you have walked, biked, driven, or flown. It will also tell you how much time you've spent at different places.

1TB option for iPhone 13 Pro duo, LiDAR on all models, say analysts

Back in June analysts at Wedbush claimed that all iPhone 13 models will have LiDAR and that the Pro models will be available with up to 1 TB storage. Later the analysts at TrendForce reported that neither claim is true, limiting the LiDAR to the two Pro models and their storage to 512 GB.

But the Wedbush analysts have kept a close eye at the supply chain in Asia and now reiterate their original claim - LiDAR on all models, 1 TB options on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. This might mean that the lower storage options (128 GB and 256 GB) will be doubled too.

The analysts don't say anything on the matter, but they do expect the iPhone 13 generation to match or exceed the current 12 generation in terms of sales. The supply chain is targeting 90-100 million units, compared to 80 million for the current models. That's around a 15% increase year over year.

Of course targets change, with the chip shortage having a major effect on that. Still, the forecast is for a profitable year for Apple that will benefit as the economy and consumer interest starts to recover after the vaccine rollout expands.

Mumbai Police recover 70 porn videos made on Raj Kundra's order: Reports

Raj Kundra has not revealed much about his video business in the police custody. Mumbai Police have written to banks to obtain the details of the accounts of his company, reports said.

The arrest of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty's husband, businessman Raj Kundra is not the end of the alleged porn racket operating in Mumbai, as Mumbai police are believed to have found a wider network, involving many small production houses of the city. These houses were associated with the operation of hotshots, the now-deleted streaming application. Reports said Mumbai police recovered 70 videos which were shot by Kundra's former personal assistant Umesh Kamat with the help of different production houses. The police team has also found 90 videos which were exclusively meant for the Hotshots app. Now, these smaller production houses will also come under the scanner.

The complaint against Raj Kundra is not only making pornographic films in India, which is illegal under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the IT rules but also to lure people to feature in porn movies promising them roles in web series. Kundra's lawyer Abad Ponda, however, said the content of the app was vulgar, but not pornographic. Several other Bollywood personalities have claimed so.

Raj Kundra is in police custody till July 23, but he has not revealed much during the questioning. Reports said Mumbai Police have written to various banks seeking details of the bank account of Kundra.

After raiding his house and office, Police have found the server which will be sent for forensic analysis to confirm whether the content for the app was uploaded using the server.

Mumbai Police have launched the probe into the case in February and after several arrests reached Raj Kundra. A report claimed Raj Kundra avoided arrest since February by bribing the Crime Branch officers.

Raj Kundra has been running this business for two years though his Hotshots app was sold to a UK firm apparently to escape investigation in India. Police have revealed that the UK firm is owned by Kundra's brother-in-law and though the official ownership was transferred, Kundra used to manage the operations. Police have also revealed that Raj Kundra was planning to close Hotshots altogether and start a new streaming app. Kundra had also planned to take down some of the content from Hotshots.

ICC fines Sri Lanka for slow over-rate in 2nd ODI against India

ICC on Thursday announced that Sri Lanka were been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in Colombo on Tuesday.

The problems for Sri Lanka are never ending. After losing the 2nd ODI and the series to India despite being in a strong position, ICC on Thursday announced that the hosts were been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in Colombo on Tuesday.

Ranjan Madugalle of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka's side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Lyndon Hannibal, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella leveled the charge.

"In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

"In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, Sri Lanka will lose one point from their points tally during the Super League," ICC said in a release.

ICC also announced that there won't be any official hearing as Sri Lanka captain Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction.

Sri Lanka will again face India in the third and final ODI hoping to avoid a whitewash on Friday.

Karnataka cops launch initiative to combat theft, harassment in train coaches

Police officials in charge of the railway stations across several cities in Karnataka will visit the stations themselves and hand over visiting cards to the passengers and users of the railway station. They will then educate the staffers on how to keep the railway stations and trains safe for users.

Karnataka Police has taken a new initiative to abolish all sorts of nuisance, theft, and harassment to passengers inside the coaches of the railways, according to a report published on 22nd July on BTV Web, a Kannada news channel portal. This is the first time in the country when the standard police force has taken the initiative to curb undesirable activities inside the railway stations and coaches.

Notably, the railway police have also vowed to work in tandem for this initiative. The facility was devised by the combined effort of Bhaskar Rao, additional director general of police (ADGP), and superintendent of police (SP), railways, Sri Gowri.

Initially, the officials carried out a public meeting drive in Cantonment, Yeshwantpur, and Bengaluru Central railway stations.

Police officials in charge of the railway stations across several cities in Karnataka will visit the stations themselves and hand over visiting cards to the passengers and users of the railway station. They will then educate the staffers on how to keep the railway stations and trains safe for users of railway services from nuisance mongers and thefts.

"The 'happy to help' cards will be given to the passengers with contact numbers of the police officials in the area. This initiative will be spread all over the state in a phased manner", Rao was quoted as saying by the portal. The passengers or railway users who are harassed by criminal elements can call or send a WhatsApp message to reach the police officials and can ask for their help.

Police officials in Bengaluru Central, Yeshwanthpur, Cantonment, Bangarpete, Mandya, Hassan, and Arsikere have already printed their visiting cards and they will soon be distributed among the railway users. As many as 18 major railway stations will see this activity being implemented in the next few days, Rao said.

According to the statistics of the police department, the crime rates in railway stations and coaches have come down substantially in the last three years. In 2018, a total of 1,496 cases were reported followed by 1,870 in 2019 and 755 in 2020.

'I'm sorry': Australian PM on slow vaccine rollout amid spike in Covid-19 cases

Australia's two largest states - New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria - recently witnessed a sharp increase in daily Covid-19 caseload, even as both the regions remain under lockdown.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday apologised to his country for the slow rollout of Covid-19 vaccination campaign, even as cases due to the virus outbreak continue to see a spike amid lockdown.

Talking to reporters, Morrison said, "I'm sorry that we haven't been able to achieve the marks that we had hoped for at the beginning of this year."

The country has been inoculating less than 150,000 Covid-19 vaccine jabs a day - much behind other developed countries.

Two of the country's largest states - New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria - logged sharp increases in the daily infection rates on Wednesday. While NSW, which houses Australia's largest city Sydney, recorded 110 new cases - up from 78 on the preceding day - Victoria clocked 22 fresh cases. Sydney was put under lockdown on June 26, and the same will remain enforced until at least July 30. Meanwhile, Victoria is staring at an almost two-week lockdown.

Speaking at a televised news conference on Wednesday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said, "Had we not gone into a lockdown a few weeks ago, the 110 number today would undoubtedly have been thousands and thousands."

However, Berejiklian has urged the people of NSW to get vaccinated and "brace" amid anticipations that "case numbers will continue to go up before they start coming down".

She further stated that whether NSW will exit the lockdown by July 30 target cannot be confirmed until the following week due to rise in coronavirus cases.

The Australian government has said that it will meet its target of vaccinating its adult population by the end of 2021 as millions of Covid-19 vaccine doses from Moderna and Pfizer are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, a third state - South Australia - began its first day of a week-long lockdown on Wednesday. Furthermore, NSW's neighbouring state Queensland has closed its border with the former due to the spike in cases, thereby shutting off one of Australia's most travelled routes.

The highly virulent and transmissible Delta variant of Covid-19 has been confirmed in 124 countries now, including Australia, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday. First detected in India, the variant is "expected" to "rapidly outcompete other variants and become the dominant circulating lineage over the coming months," the global health agency stated in its weekly epidemiological update.

Notably, the Delta variant accounts for over 75 per cent of coronavirus cases in multiple nations, including Australia, South Africa, Great Britain, Russia, Singapore, and India, among others. The US health officials on Tuesday confirmed that the variant is responsible for nearly 83 per cent of the cases in the country.

Over 4 million ineligible people got PM-KISAN cash: Govt in Parliament

According to figures provided by agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar in his written reply on July 20, the number of illegal beneficiaries in Assam stood at 83,5268, the highest in any state, accounting for about a fifth of total ineligible beneficiaries

Nearly 4.2 million people not eligible for pay-outs under PM-KISAN, the Modi government's cash-transfer scheme for farmers, received ₹2,900 crore in all since the scheme's roll-out and steps will be taken to recover the amounts, agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar has stated in a Parliament reply.

According to data cited in Tomar's reply to an "unstarred" question in Lok Sabha, the Lower House, most states had ineligible beneficiaries. The largest numbers were in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Bihar. An unstarred question is one in which a written answer is provided.

Under PM-KISAN, the government provides income support of ₹,6000 a year to every land-owning farmer with a valid enrolment, paid in three equal cash transfers of ₹2,000 -- once every four months. The scheme was launched on February 24, 2019.

In the last instalment paid in May this year, the government disbursed over Rs19,000 crore to 90 million farm households. So far, the Union government has paid nearly ₹1.15 lakh crore.

According to the scheme's guidelines, the responsibility of identifying beneficiaries for PM-KISAN lies with the states.

On May 21, 2020, HT had first reported that the Union agriculture ministry had asked the Assam government for a report and a probe into a potential fraud in PM-KISAN, which allowed non-farmers to get cash in the state. This prompted the state to temporarily halt payments.

According to figures provided by Tomar in his written reply on July 20, the number of illegal beneficiaries in Assam stood at 83,5268, the highest in any state, accounting for about a fifth of total ineligible beneficiaries.

Tamil Nadu, a state known for efficient bureaucracy, figures next with 72,2271 fraudulent beneficiaries. In Chhattisgarh, 58,289 ineligible people got cash benefits, the third-highest. In Punjab, the number of ineligible people was 56,2256, followed by Bihar with 52,178 illegal beneficiaries.

"States have been asked to initiate criminal proceedings against people who fraudulently got into the system and to recover amounts disbursed to them," an official with knowledge of the matter said, requesting anonymity.

The amounts to be recovered from ineligible beneficiaries in some states run into hundreds of crores. Assam needs to recover ₹554 crore, while Uttar Pradesh must get back ₹258 crore (the state had 26,5321 ineligible beneficiaries). Bihar has to recover ₹425 crore, while Punjab needs to recover ₹437 crore.

In India, the well-off or ineligible people often receive benefits they are not entitled to. According to the government's Economic Survey 2015-16, the rich get "implicit" subsidies worth ₹1 lack crore, pointing to the need for better targeting of anti-poverty schemes.

Covishield at govt vaccination centres in Delhi to be reserved for second dose

The vaccination drive in Delhi has slowed down in July as fewer doses of Covishield have been available with the government. The number of doses administered in a day crossed the 100,000-mark only twice this month. It has been dipping to as low as 10,000 doses

Covishield will be reserved for administering the second dose of the vaccine at government vaccination centres until July end, the Delhi government said in an order on Thursday citing a limited supply of doses. The order said the beneficiaries in the 18-45 age group, who began receiving the vaccination in May, are due to become eligible for the second shot.

"Vaccination of 18 to 44 cohort began on May 1, 2021, and with the completion of 84-day interval for the second dose of Covishield, many of them would not become eligible for the second dose in the coming weeks. In view of a limited supply of vaccines, all slots - both for online booking and walk-in -- ... in government Covid Vaccination Centres will be reserved for the second dose with immediate effect till July 31," said health and family welfare department director Monika Rana in the order.

The vaccination drive in Delhi has slowed down in July as fewer doses of Covishield have been available with the government. The number of doses administered in a day crossed the 100,000-mark only twice this month. It has been dipping to as low as 10,000 doses.

The number of doses administered shot up in Delhi after June 21 and crossed the 200,000-mark on three days as the government was able to use up the doses in stock for those above the age of 45. Prior to June 21, free doses provided were restricted for those above 45. The doses for those in the 18-45 age group were purchased by the state government at a differential pricing.

In June, the government stopped the use of Covaxin for the first dose across all government and even private centres following a shortage of vaccines for administering second doses. Those in the 18-45 age group, who received Covaxin shots, were eligible for their second dose in June after completing the four-week gap.

'My name is Roger Federer,' says Indian opener Devdutt Padikkal in 'wrong answers' game - VIDEO

While almost all of the Indian cricketers came up with some hilarious replies to all the questions in 'wrong answers only' game, opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal perhaps took the cake when said his name was Roger Federer.

Indian cricketers in Sri Lanka are in the best possible headspace right now. After pocketing the ODI series with a stunning victory in the previous match, the likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Devdutt Padikkal, Sauryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav indulged in a game of 'wrong answers only' ahead of their third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

In the video posted by BCCI on Twitter on Thursday, the young guns were seen giving 'wrong answers only' to some quirky questions like 'what is your name?' 'which sport do Messi and Ronaldo play?' 'what is the shape of the earth?' 'who were the actors in 3 Idiots?' and so on.

While almost all of them came up with some hilarious replies to all the questions, opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal perhaps took the cake when said his name was Roger Federer.

Chakravarthy gave a tough fight to Padikkal when said "My name is Rajnikant."

The Pandya brothers too were at their best while giving the 'wrong answers.' Hardik said the actors in 3 Idiots were he, Krunal and Kieron Pollard.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan-led India won the first game by seven wickets, Deepak Chahar pulled a heist in the second one with his match-winning unbeaten 69 as the visitors won by three wickets.

Now, it remains to be seen whether India continue with Prithvi Shaw, who got scores of 43 and 13, to partner the skipper at the top, or go in for classy Devdutt Padikkal or an equally elegant Ruturaj Gaikwad -- both superb List A players.

Committed to solving issues related to Char Dham Board: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

Dhami's statement came amid protests by the priests of the four revered shrines of Char Dham--Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri--for the abolishment of the Board constituted last year

Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said his government is committed to solving issues related to Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board amicably by talking to the parties concerned including the priests. "We have been already doing that, but despite that, it seems that the priests of the four shrines have doubts that we are going to snatch their rights," he said during his visit to the rain-affected villages in Uttarkashi district on Wednesday.

Dhami's statement came amid protests by the priests of the four revered shrines of Char Dham--Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri--for the abolishment of the Board constituted last year.

"I want to assure them that their all rights will be kept intact. The government only wants to assist them in improving the facilities for pilgrims. Having said that, we are in favour of any positive changes in the Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board," Dhami said. He added the government plans to form a committee to speak to the parties concerned on the issues related to the Board. "Based on the recommendations of the committee, further action will be taken."

Dubai creates fake rain to deal with sweltering heat. Watch

UAE's National Centre of Meteorology shared the video of fake rain created in Dubai.

Dubai is undergoing a sweltering summer. In fact, the temperatures in the place surpassed 50C at a point. To beat the heat, the UAE's National Center of Meteorology came up with a solution that resulted in monsoon-like downpour on the highways.

The enhanced rain is created using drone technology known as cloud seeding, reports Daily Mail. The innovative tech gives clouds an electric shock that makes then clump together to produce precipitation.

A video of the downpour was also shared on the official Twitter handle of UAE's National Centre of Meteorology. The video shows rain pouring down on a highway as the cars navigate through it.

Heavy rains cause floods in parts of Maharashtra

State authorities have deployed two teams of National Disaster Relief Force in Kolhapur as the Panchganga river has started swelling

Coastal Konkan, parts of Mumbai metropolitan region and several districts in western Maharashtra and Vidarbha witnessed floods on Thursday following heavy rains since Wednesday.

Chiplun town in Ratnagiri district of Konkan is badly hit as floodwater from nearby Vasisthi river submerged several areas. The state administration is planning to evacuate hundreds of residents who have been stranded at home in submerged areas.

State authorities have deployed two teams of National Disaster Relief Force in Kolhapur as the Panchganga river has started swelling.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur for Thursday while nine other distircts, including Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane, are under orange alert.

Water level of Panchganga river in Kolhapur, and Krishna in Sangli has been on the rise nearing the danger level. The district administration has started discharge from the Koyana dam in Satara after it reported a rise in the water level. Many rivers in Ratnagiri district in coastal parts of the state have crossed their danger level.

In Mumbai Metropolitan Region, governed by nine municipal corporations, including Mumbai and Thane, the incessant rainfall over the past couple of days has resulted in waterlogging and disruption in the local train operations. Of the seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai, Modak Sagar started overflowing early Thursday morning and Tansa is almost full. Two other lakes, Tulsi and Vehar, began overflowing last week. The rainfall in the catchment areas of the lakes has resulted in the rise in the water stock that will last for 64 days.

Local train operations are also disrupted on Central and Harbour line. Train services on the Konkan railway too have witnessed disruption owing to the waterlogging on the tracks in Ratnagiri. "Eight trains have been regulated due to a disruption on the route," Konkan Railway said. Water level of the Vashishti river between Chiplun and Kamathe stations in Ratnagiri rose above the danger level early Thursday morning.

After the water level in Panchganga river started rising rapidly, state authorities deployed two teams of NDRF in Kolhapur. "Each team has 25 personnel. More teams have been kept on standby for other parts of the state," said an official from the disaster management unit of the state government.

With moderate to heavy rainfall across the state over the past few days, the water level in reservoirs has increased to 34.28%. The state has received 57.3% of the season's -- June to September -- rainfall with 575.1mm rainfall till date against season's average rainfall of 1004.2 mm. The state has received more than 88mm rainfall in the last 60 hours, according to the state government website.

Two NDRF teams have been deployed for Khed and Chiplun, Ratnagiri tehsils that have been badly hit. The local administration has started rescue operations with the help of three boats of Indian Coast Guard and police department. The district administration has also demanded a Coast Guard helicopter for the rescue operation in these tehsils, a statement by district collector read.

Suzuki joins Toyota's electric vehicle venture, to focus on small electric cars

Suzuki, along with Daihatsu, will offer their expertise in small cars as one of the key challenges of bringing electrification and autonomous technology to such vehicles is keeping costs under control to make them affordable.

Days after reports emerged that Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corp is likely to enter the electric vehicle market in India by 2025, the company has entered a joint venture with Toyota Motor to produce EVs. Suzuki, along with Daihatsu, will join the commercial electric vehicle coalition led by Toyota to help the alliance expand its focus from trucks to smaller cars.

Toyota released a statement on Wednesday, confirming some of the details about this agreement. It says that both Suzuki and Daihatsu will own 10 per cent stake in the joint venture, along with other stakeholders like Isuzu Motors. Toyota will keep the majority 60 per cent stake to itself.

Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor, said, "With Suzuki and Daihatsu joining the project and working together, we'll be able to expand our circle of cooperation to not only cover commercial vehicles but also mini vehicles. With this expansion, I believe that we'll be able to take one step closer to a better mobility society."

As part of the collaboration, Suzuki and Toyota will work towards small cars with advanced safety technologies and cooperate in use of technologies for the electrification for affordable, high-quality small cars.

Suzuki, along with Daihatsu, will offer their expertise in small cars as one of the key challenges of bringing electrification and autonomous technology to such vehicles is keeping costs under control to make them affordable.

The agreement comes at a time when Japanese carmakers are facing tough challenges from rivals, even tech companies, who are venturing into the electric vehicle market.

According to a report recently published in Nikkei Asia, Suzuki Motor will launch its first electric vehicle in India within the next four years. Suzuki's four-wheeler business, which operates in India in partnership with Maruti, is reportedly planning to launch an all-electric compact model for the Indian customers. Though not much detail has been divulged in the report, the electric car is likely to be priced in the range between ₹10 lakh and ₹11 lakh.

This Battista model is part of Pininfarina's special customisation program. Under this project, Pininfarina will offer 150 customers limitless personalisation options. This customisation program offers 13.9 quintillion unique exterior combinations and 128 million interior combinations.

Despite coming with the same silhouette as the standard Battista, the bespoke electric hypercar gets Red, White and Blue colour schemes. The deep blue colour is not exactly a solid colour, but a blue carbon fibre weaving.

Pininfarina has touted this colour theme as Exposed Signature Carbon with Blu Iconica thread. The Italian coach specialist turned automaker claims that this is the first such application in the automotive industry. It also says that the entire painting job has been done by hand taking hundreds of hours to finish.

It also gets hand-applied performance stripes and pinstripe Bianco Sestriere Metallic colour. The car's exterior also received a red strip as well as the Furiosa Carbon Accent Pack in black Exposed Signature Carbon. The Impulso wheels come finished in Dark Matt Grey colour. They sport black aluminium centre-lock rings. The roof, diffuser, rear wing, and headlight engraving of the Battista gets a matching colour theme.

Not only exterior, inside the cabin too this bespoke Battista has received a host of updates. It comes with Pilota seats upholstered in black leather. The carbon seatbacks received the same Iconica Blu thread as the exterior. POther design elements include Iconica Blu Alcantara with navy colour inserts, Iconica Blu stitching with red and white cross contrast threads, red headrest logos, and white coloured seatbelts. The red brushed aluminium trim complements the red exterior stripes.

Sara Campagnolo, Head of Colour and Materials Design at Automobili Pininfarina, said that Battista comes carrying the legacy of car designing the company is known for. "Our clients have the unique opportunity to join the Automobili Pininfarina family, immersing themselves in the design process with our talented craftspeople to ensure their vehicle authentically reflects their personality and tastes, created with a truly personal touch," Campagnolo further added.

KTM RC 8C is housed around a bespoke steel tubular chassis and draws power from the 890 Duke R sourced engine.
The limited-edition KTM RC 8C won't be launched for Indian customers any time soon.

KTM has unveiled the limited-edition RC 8C sportsbike for the world market. The motorcycle is limited to just 100 units and has been developed specifically for track use only.

The motorcycle is housed around a bespoke steel tubular chassis and draws power from the 890 Duke R sourced engine. It is an 889cc, liquid-cooled, eight-valve, parallel-twin engine that is responsible for developing 126bhp of power.

Needless to say, the new KTM 8C will be a very close reflection of the company's race bike and the icing on the top - the company claims that it doesn't need a specialist race team to maintain the motorcycle. The bike is completely hand-built and is powered by a high-torque production engine.

It sports KTM RC16-inspired carbon Kevlar-reinforced GRP bodywork. Apart from adding to its razor sharp looks, the aerodynamic winglets contributes to added downforce and grip on racing tarmac.

Some other key exterior updates on the model include its full-fairing design, clip-on handlebars, rear-set footpegs, and an Akrapovic exhaust system. It gets a five-inch TFT display with the integrated data recording. The AIM MXS 1.2 RACE dashboard on the motorcycle comes with data logger and gets an integrated GPS function.

Other key highlights of the bike include its quick-release tank and body panels, lightweight Dymag wheels, and Pirelli SC1 race slick tyres.

The suspension kit on the bike includes 43mm WP APEX PRO 7543 closed cartridge front forks that are complemented with a WP APEX PRO 7746 rear mono-shock. For braking, it uses twin 290mm discs with Brembo Stylema callipers at the front and a single 230mm rotor with a Brembo two-piston calliper at the rear.

Tesla Model 3 in Red paint reaches Bangalore while India awaits official launch

Tesla is expected to officially launch its Model 3 sedan in end of this year.
Tesla Model 3 is the most affordable car from the EV brand.

Tesla announced its entry into the Indian market and registered itself in the country on January 8 this year. This was a milestone for India's EV industry and since then electric vehicle enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for the official launch of the Tesla cars here.

Tesla has already started testing the Model 3 electric compact sedan in India in camouflaged guise, but we are still awaiting the official launch. Meanwhile, the first Tesla Model 3 is here, delivered to a buyer in Bangalore. The picture of this blood-red coloured Model 3 EV has been shared online fuelling the enthusiasm further. The Model 3 spotted in Bangalore is a dual motor variant.

While this is the first Tesla Model 3 in India, there are other Tesla models already in the country. Some of the buyers have privately imported the Tesla models already. Industrialists such as Mukesh Ambani and Prashant Ruia are two of them.

The automaker is expected to bring the Model 3 as its first official electric car in the Indian market. The EVs will be sold here through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route. The Model 3 is sold in the US at a starting price of $39,990, which is around ₹30 lakhs as per the current exchange rate. However, it may actually cost around ₹70 lakh in India due to high customs duty slapped on foreign-manufactured cars.

Tesla Model 3 is available in both single and dual motor setups. The base variant of the Tesla Model 3 can run up to 423 km on a single charge. It can accelerate 0-100 kmph in less than 6 seconds. The top variant of the EV is capable of running 586 km on a full charge. It can accelerate to 100 kmph from a standstill position in 3 seconds.

Will Ola Electric galvanize India's EV movement like how Tesla did worldwide?

Massive manufacturing facility, low booking amount, high production capabilities and claims of breakthrough product - Ola Electric and Tesla appear to have more similarities that you would expect.

Ola Electric may not be regarded as pioneers of Indian electric vehicle movement and at first glance, comparisons to global EV leader Tesla may seem rather far fetched. Yet, there is no denying that in the last week or so, Ola Electric has generated a humongous buzz around its upcoming - and first - electric scooter. Now raring for an official launch, Ola Electric received one lakh orders for its electric scooter within 24 hours of the booking window being opened.

Rivals are sitting up and taking note. Much like how Tesla's rise resulted in - and continues to - get competitors to constantly up their game, several companies manufacturing electric scooters in India have started announcing a gamut of initiatives and investments in recent days. Is it the Ola effect?

Many believe why Ola Electric's bookings' invite for its debut product has been as successful as it has been is because of the 'paltry' amount of ₹499 to book a unit. At less than the cost of a medium-sized pizza, the amount is also refundable. Rewind a little less than two years ago when Tesla showcased its Cybertruck and opened booking windows. The EV giant started taking deposits of just $100 (approximately ₹7,400 at current exchange rate) for an EV touted as a capable pick-up with the performance of a sportscar. Bookings may not always translate to sales but it still stands as a strong sign.

Ola is also backing its electric scooter to have class-leading acceleration, largest-in-class storage space, high top speed, among other highlights.

It is also being speculated that the Ola electric scooter could be priced between ₹80,000 and ₹1 lakh. If true at launch, it could be one of the most affordable electric scooter options in the country. And affordability is crucial as has been seen with the success that Model 3 - Tesla's cheapest EV currently - has had.

There are also reports that Ola may follow a direct-to-home sales system and not rely on a dedicated dealership network. While HT Auto cannot confirm this, if true, it could well be similar to how Tesla goes about its business of having no private dealership network and itself owning the supply and delivery chains. It also helps Tesla that CEO Elon Musk has a massive fan following on social media. Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal too has been using his Twitter account to share photos and videos of his company's upcoming product.

Then there is the big question about scalability. Ola's under-construction mega facility in Tamil Nadu is nearly ready to initially roll out two million units each year. The figure will be 10 million per annum in the times to come. Called FutureFactory, it will also serve as base for exports to foreign markets.

Tesla's Gigafactory units across the world are known for being massive - both in terms of area as well as capabilities. Its main facility in California has a capacity to drive out half a million EVs each year. The Shanghai facility too has been designed to have a similar roll out capability. Tesla delivered 201,250 vehicles in the first quarter of the year, a record, and is now looking to scale up even more. Scalability, therefore, is a massive bragging point - especially when it comes to the world of EVs.

So while it may seem rather outlandish to compare Ola Electric with Tesla, the point is that there are similarities in ambitions and business model and scale that just cannot be written off. Will Ola Electric be the giant of electric scooter space in India just as Tesla is in the world of electric cars? Guesses are fine but solid verdicts may be a bit premature currently.

The first promo videos for the Realme GT Master Edition show the inspiration behind the design

Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa is known for his unorthodox creations and has a long-standing partnership with Realme. Remember the Onion and Garlic-themed Realme X? The Brick and Concrete Relame X2 Pro Master Edition? The Lines and Cricles X50 5G Master Edition? Well, now it's time for the Realme GT Master Edition.

This time Fukasawa drew inspiration from travel and more specifically from suitcases. Soft touch leather that has been shaped to match the curves of the back of the phone. This Master Edition also has a ribbed design, reminiscent of suitcases, and comes in two neutral colors: gray and apricot.

Here's a short video featuring Fukasawa and his creation:

After long lockdowns, people are looking to start traveling again and the designer took inspiration from that - a journey can reignite your curiosity and sense of exploration.

And here is a hands-on video showing off both designs of the Realme GT Master Edition:

Besides the two suitcase-inspired models, there are two without the bumpy backs but still with a theme of exploration: Snow Mountain and Dawn.

And note that this Master Edition design is shared by two fairly different models. The Explorer Edition is powered by a Snapdragon 870, while the base model comes with a Snapdragon 778G.

Mahindra Bolero has been one of the most successful utility vehicles in the Indian market for a long time. Its practicality, go-to-anywhere capability and reliability of the strong mHawk diesel engine have played key roles in making the Bolero a successful model. Using the iconic Bolero nomenclature might help the new SUV but only time will how successful it is going to be.

Here are the design elements, features and specifications that are new in Mahindra Bolero Neo compared to the original Bolero.

Mahindra Bolero vs Bolero Neo: Price and variants

Mahindra Bolero Neo is available in four variants - N4, N8, N10 and N10(O). The standard Bolero on the other hand comes in three variant options - B4, B6 and B6(O).

The Bolero Neo N10 variant's price will be announced later although some reports suggest it sits under ₹11 lakh. The N4 and N8 variants are priced at ₹8.48 lakh and ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. Standard Bolero price ranges between ₹8.63 lakh and ₹9.61 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mahindra Bolero vs Bolero Neo: Design

Mahindra Bolero Neo looks a lot like the discontinued TUV300. It won't be an exaggeration if the new SUV is described as a facelift version of TUV300. The Bolero Neo looks more premium than the original Mahindra Bolero.

Despite carrying design elements such as a boxy and upright stance with a sub-four metre length, the Bolero Neo looks quite different compared to Bolero. It gets a smoother look than the original Bolero. The car has ditched Bolero's old school looks.

Bolero Neo gets bending head lights with LED daytime running light, which is missing in the original Bolero. Its wheel arches are also slightly more pronounced. There are, however, similarities between these two models as well. Side body mouldings, clamshell bonnet are similar in both models.

Mahindra Bolero vs Bolero Neo: Dimensions

Both the SUVs come with several dimensional similarities. Length and wheelbase of both Bolero Neo and Bolero are same at 3,995 mm and 2,680 mm respectively. Bolero Neo is 50 mm wider than Bolero - at 1,795 mm. The original Bolero trumps Bolero Neo in height by around 63 mm - at 1,880 mm.

Mahindra Bolero vs Bolero Neo: Interiors and features

Bolero Neo's cabin looks slightly different from the TUV300. It gets a dual-tone dashboard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity, a height-adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, front-seat armrests, cruise control, remote locking etc. The Bolero Neo can accommodate up to seven occupants inside the cabin just like standard Bolero.

Original Bolero's cabin on the other hand looks very much utilitarian and lacks frills. It gets a rather conventional audio system, a not-so-impressive digital instrument cluster, apart from power windows, remote locking etc.

Bolero Neo gets safety features like a strong rigid body structure, dual airbags, ABS and corner braking control (CBC) etc. Standard Bolero gets safety features like driver airbag, ABS, reverse parking sensor, seat-belt reminder etc.

Mahindra Bolero vs Bolero Neo: Powertrain and mechanicals

Both the Boleros are powered by the automaker's mHawk 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines. Bolero Neo gets mHawk100 and mHawk75 powers Bolero. Bolero Neo gets variable geometry turbo for increased power output at 100 hp and 260 Nm of torque. Bolero on the other hand churns out 76 hp of power and 210 Nm of torque. Both the SUVs get micro-hybrid technology and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

    Mahindra Bolero   Mahindra Bolero Neo
Engine   1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo diesel   1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo diesel
Transmission   5-speed MT   5-speed MT
Power   76 hp   100 hp
Torque   210 Nm   260 Nm
Both the Bolero Neo and Bolero are built on the automaker's sub-four metre ladder-frame chassis. Both the SUVs get longitudinal engines and RWD drivetrain. But the Bolero Neo is based on the OEM's third-generation chassis that also underpins Scorpio and new Thar SUVs.

Bolero Neo gets a much better suspension compared to standard Bolero. It comes with an independent front and multi-link rear suspension, both with coil springs and stabilizer bars. Bolero on the other hand comes with independent front suspension and leaf springs at rear.

Canada extends ban on passenger flights from India till Aug 21 over Covid-19

The ban, which was imposed on April 22 when India was witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases, was set to expire on July 21, but will now remain in place until August 21, Global News Ca reported.

Canada on Monday announced that it is extending the ban on incoming passenger flights from India for another month due to the Delta variant of Covid-19.

The ban, which was imposed on April 22 when India was witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases, was set to expire on July 21, but will now remain in place until August 21, Global News Ca reported.

It is for the fourth time that the ban has been extended.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra told reporters during a news conference that the reason for the extension was due to the Delta variant, which is considered the dominant strain of Covid-19 worldwide.

"While progress is being made, the situation in India is still very serious," he said. "The decision is based on the advice received from the Public Health Agency of Canada, and will best protect Canadians from an increased introduction of the Delta variant, which is prevalent in India."

The Canadian government on Monday announced that fully vaccinated American citizens and permanent residents who want to come to Canada for non-essential reasons can do so starting on August 9.

52 years of Apollo 11 mission: Here's Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin describe what it's like to be on Moon

The mission made Armstrong the first person to step on the Moon, while Buzz Aldrin was second as he joined his astronaut friend almost 19 minutes later. The spaceflight was piloted by another Nasa astronaut Michel Collins.

Tuesday marks 52 years of the Apollo 11 mission that carried three US astronauts to the Moon and landed them on the surface of the planet's satellite for the first time in human history. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin landed Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, as they took giant leaps for mankind.

Here are some quotes by the astronauts from past briefings and interviews as they describe the "lunatic" experience":

"I was surprised by the apparent closeness of the horizon," Armstrong said after mission while describing his experience, as per an AFP report. "I was surprised by the trajectory of dust that you kicked up with your boot, and I was surprised that even though logic would have told me that there shouldn't be any, there was no dust when you kicked. You never had a cloud of dust there," he added.

Rain, thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR for next 2 hours; ITO, Lodhi road affected. Full list here

"Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of many places of Delhi ( Punjabi Bagh, Rajauri Garden, Patel Nagar, Red fort, ITO, President House, India Gate, Delhi Cantt, Lodi Road, Safdarjung, R K Puram," IMD tweeted.

Delhi will receive light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday accompanied by thunderstorms, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted. Adjoining areas of Delhi like Gurugram, Faridabad, Hindon Air Force Station, Noida, Ghaziabad and those in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh will also witness thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain in the next two hours, IMD said.

"Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of many places of Delhi ( Punjabi Bagh, Rajauri Garden, Patel Nagar, Red fort, ITO, President House, India Gate, Delhi Cantt, Lodi Road, Safdarjung, R K Puram," IMD tweeted.

The moderate rains are likely to continue through the rest of the day, IMD officials told HT. However, from Tuesday onward, the temperatures are likely to rise by a few degrees.

"Light rainfall is likely on Tuesday as well. However, the activity will slow down thereafter and may pick up again on July 23-24," said Kuldeep Srivastava, head, regional weather forecasting centre, IMD.

In what was termed as an 'early monsoon' prediction, rains reached Delhi on July 13 - the longest such delay in recent history. It was earlier predicted to reach Delhi by the end of June.

However, even after moderate showers on the first two days of its onset, the city got only "traces" of rainfall, despite predictions of light rain and thundershowers, and an "orange alert" that was issued for the weekend.

However, Delhi covered the deficit on Monday after heavy showers lashed the city throughout the day. The Capital covered the rainfall deficit of nearly 51% recorded till Saturday ending the heatwave spell it was reeling under.

Delhi and NCR received incessant rainfall on Monday morning, resulting in waterlogging affecting vehicular movement in Gurugram, Noida and Delhi. Severe waterlogging was also reported in Gurugram's Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) due to heavy rainfall, while vehicles were seen partially submerged in water in Sector 10.

The early morning showers that continued throughout the day led to roads being inundated, the Delhi Police said. While traffic was diverted at several places, some areas were barricaded because of a portion of the road caving in.

There are around 150 waterlogging-prone stretches across the city, of which civic authorities consider five crucial -- Minto Bridge, Pul Prahladpur, Zakhira, Moolchand and Peeragarhi.

Following Acer and Samsung's footsteps, ASUS has launched a barrage of new Chromebooks for the Indian market. Except for the Chromebook C223, all other models can be configured with touchscreens. Chromebooks are, in essence, meant for students and users looking for a barebones computing experience. Let's take a look at what the ASUS Chromebook C223, Flip C214, C423, and C523 have in store for us.

It will be available for purchase via Flipkart and the official ASUS website.

ASUS Chromebook C423 -- Rs 19,999

It reuses the same Intel Celeron N3350 processor but bumps up the storage from 32GB to 64GB while keeping the same 4GB of RAM. Everything else is pretty much identical across the board, including the number of USB Type-A ports (1), Type-C ports (2), Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi support, and the 38Wh battery. The ASUS Chromebook C423 variant with no touchscreen costs Rs 19,999, whereas the one with the touchscreen costs Rs 23,999. It, too, can be bought via Flipkart and ASUS' official website.

The phone is said to come with a 50MP primary camera, an 8MP secondary sensor, and a 2MP secondary lens
Redmi 10 launch date is yet to be revealed by the company

Xiaomi Redmi 10 lineup seems to be in the final stages of development and is expected to launch soon. According to him, the Redmi 10 will feature a 50MP Samsung S5KJN1 sensor, 8MP Sony IMX355 wide-angle lens, and a 2MP macro lens. However, the front-camera details remain a mystery, for now. Some of them include the Super Smooth game mode not working and the inability to get to in-game events via the Mini Ray TV.
Krafton has stated that it will issue a fix 'at the earliest'.

Now that Battlegrounds Mobile India is finally out and about, some of the game's bugs are beginning to surface. The game's developer, Krafton, happens to be cognizant of the said buds and is said to be working on a fix. Some of them include the inability to adjust the Sprint button in settings, Super Smooth game mode not being available, and players being unable to proceed to ongoing events through Mini Ray TV. Anyone experiencing the aforementioned bugs can reach out to Krafton by navigating to the bottom right corner of the lobby, go to Settings > Basic > Customer Service.

These bugs crept into the game via the Battlegrounds Mobile India July update, which was rolled out just a few days ago. Among other things, it added new weapons, a new game mode, and a few other QoL upgrades. There's a monthly Battle Pass thrown in the mix, too. The bugs listed above were also a part of the July update. Super Smooth mode was meant to make the game playable on low-end devices and the Mini Ray TV was an in-game mechanic that allowed you to keep up with in-game events in real-time.

A future Battlegrounds Mobile India update will add Tesla Gigafactories to the map. One can watch a Tesla being built end-to-end and even ride one of the cars. The same update also will add Clan Clash mode that pits one clan against another, with the clans competing for dominance and in-game rewards.

Counterpoint: half of mid-rangers sold in Europe support 5G, but Huawei's departure increased prices

In the first quarter of last year there were no mid-range 5G phones available on the European market. Then in Q3 they made up 20% of the segment. In the first quarter of this year 5G mid-rangers account for half of devices sold in Europe in the $250-$500 range, according to Counterpoint Research.

Support for the next-gen networks is only part of the story - the mid-tier ($250-$500) and "affordable premium" tier ($500-$700) are what drove the growth of smartphone sales on the Old Continent last year. And this came at the expense of Huawei.

Huawei is now all but gone from the Western market. It was highly popular in the sub-$250 segment, but the companies that gobbled up its market share chose to focus on the higher price tiers instead. The analysts argue this is why the $250-$500 and $500-$700 segments grew even during an economic slowdown caused by the pandemic. Also, there is now a shortage of attractive sub-$250 devices.

Relatively new brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus showed a significant four-fold increase in sales compared to Q1 last year. Over one third of phones sold in the mid and affordable premium tiers now come from these three companies.

That is putting pressure on Apple and Samsung in those segments, but according to Counterpoint the two market leaders are not safe even in the flagship segment as Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme and vivo all gaining traction. They are working on foldable flagships, which will increase the pressure on Apple and Samsung even more, predict the analysts.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 gets FCC certification, 22.5W charging and MIUI 12.5 confirmed

Plenty of recent evidence points to a new Xiaomi tablet in the works and now an FCC listing has yet again confirmed its existence.

The new info about a Xiaomi tablet with the 21051182G model number brings a few more spec details including MIUI 12.5 on the software side, 22.5W charging speeds and dual-band Wi-Fi capabilities.

Last week we saw an MIIT certification for the alleged Mi Pad 5 Pro which confirmed 5G connectivity and a Snapdragon 870 chipset at the helm. This version should come with an 11-inch LCD with 120Hz refresh rate and 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution. The screen is also expected to support 4,096 levels of pressure which would come in handy for the Xiaomi stylus expected to drop alongside the Mi Pad.

The vanilla Mi Pad 5 is expected to run on MediaTek's Dimensity 1200 chipset and was spotted with a 8,250 mAh battery capacity. We've also seen a keyboard case accessory leak in a CNIPA listing. The new Mi Pads are expected to arrive later this month.

Huawei may resort to using Qualcomm chips for its P50 series, due to Kirin SoCs shortages

According to a new report, Huawei is going to do some mix and match when it comes to chipsets and its P50 series of smartphones. The rumor appears to be perfectly in line with a similar report in June too. Due to the US trade ban, the company has a limited supply of Kirin 9000 SoCs and they just won't be enough for all P50 units. So Qualcomm chips are the obvious substitution here.

Since the US government has to explicitly allow each US company to do business with Huawei, there are some obstacles that arise. For instance, Huawei can't produce more of its Kirin 9000 chipsets and the amount it has in stock just won't cut it for a full-fledged P50 lineup release.

However, using Qualcomm chips has some trade-offs of its own and that's the lack of 5G support. The current trade ban restricts Huawei from using 5G tech so the source expects the vanilla P50 to use a 4G version of the Snapdragon 888. It's supposed to launch sometime in early to mid-August.

The Pro model, on the other hand, will start off with Kirin 9000-equipped units, again in August. But by December, experts think that the Kirin SoC supply will be depleted and the company will be forced to use Snapdragon chips.

There was no word about the P50 Pro+ on this report so we can only guess its faith.

vivo Y72 5G launched in India with Snapdragon 480, 90Hz refresh rate LCD

The first 5G handset in vivo's Y-series in India is now official with the launch of the Y72 5G. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 480 chipset instead of MediaTek's Dimensity 700 on the global model. The rear cameras are slightly different here as well with a 48MP main shooter in place of the 64MP one on the international variant and a 2MP auxiliary snapper instead of the 8MP ultrawide. Another change comes in the screen which now sports a 90Hz refresh rate but gets a downgraded 8MP selfie cam.

The rest of the specs are matching with a 6.58-inch IPS LCD and FHD+ resolution. The battery comes in at 5,000 mAh and sports 18W charging. On the software side, we have vivo's Funtouch OS 11.1 which is based on Android 11. The Y72 5G also sports a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button as well as a headphone jack and 128GB internal storage which is expiable via microSD.

Sales are already underway on vivo's online store. Pricing starts at INR 20,990 ($282) and users can choose between Prism Magic and Slate Gray colors.

Realme GT Master design reveals two versions incoming

The Realme GT Master Edition leaked multiple times earlier this month, and at the same time, another unknown phone with model number RMX3366 also claimed to be a part of the Realme portfolio of upcoming devices.

Today, the Chief Marketing Officer posted a photo of the phone, while at the same time the official company page on Weibo uploaded a video - both phones claim to be the Realme GT Master Edition, but they come with a different design of the camera island.

The common thing between those two phones is the leatherback, designed by Naoto Fukusawa - a Japanese designer that has been partnering with Realme for the past few years. The rectangles imitate a suitcase because sometimes a phone is all you need when you travel.

Both versions also have three cameras, but one of them has a pill-shaped main dual-LED flash with two more underneath the trio of shooters. That solution was also used by Realme's fellow BBK Electronics brand Oppo in the Reno5 Pro+ 5G, but that device came with a quad-cam setup and a periscope lens, so we're confident the Realme GT Master is a new phone.

We know some specs of the upcoming phone like a Snapdragon 778G chipset, a 4,300 mAh battery with 65W fast charging and a 120 Hz refresh rate of the AMOLED, combined with a 360 Hz touch sampling rate. The big question is what will be the difference between those two devices, and we'll get the answer on July 21 when the official launch will take place in China.

Daimler's preliminary second-quarter earnings exceed projections

Daimler cited strong sales and robust pricing for its vehicles, which offset the negative impact of limits on factory output.
The automaker forecast in April that its main Mercedes-Benz unit will be more profitable than it has been in years, thanks to resurgent demand for cars, trucks amid pandemic.

Daimler AG said preliminary second-quarter earnings beat estimates as the pricing power of its Mercedes-Benz luxury cars overcame lower production volumes due to a global chip shortage.

Earnings before interest and taxes surged to 5.19 billion euros ($6.14 billion) in latest three-month period on a preliminary basis, the Stuttgart, Germany-based manufacturer said Thursday in a statement, handily beating the Bloomberg estimate of 3.91 billion euros.

"We continue to deliver a strong financial performance in all divisions despite the ongoing low availability of semiconductors, which negatively impacted our production and sales in the second quarter," Chief Executive Officer Ola Källenius said in the statement.

The automaker forecast in April that its main Mercedes-Benz unit will be more profitable than it's been in years, thanks to resurgent demand for cars and trucks in the midst of the global pandemic.

The world's biggest luxury-vehicle maker expects a 12.8% annual return on sales for its cars and vans division, up from analysts' consensus estimate of 11.5% and a historically strong showing. The car operation has fallen short of double-digit margins every year following Daimler's 2007 sale of Chrysler.

A year after the auto industry's worst crisis in decades, business for German premium-car makers has roared back to record levels, driven by red-hot demand in their largest market, China. Getting earnings back on track will be pivotal to financing investments in electrification and software development as the industry segues to more technologically advanced, battery-powered vehicles.

Mercedes this year revved up its electric-car rollout with the new EQS sedan, the battery-powered sibling to its flagship S-Class, as traditional carmakers broaden their attack on Tesla Inc. The company will be making eight fully electric cars on three continents next year.

Daimler is preparing to spin off of its sprawling truck division later this year. The company expects the move to help it better tackle diverging technology trends in the passenger-car and commercial-vehicle industries.

Full quarterly results will be released on July 21.

Petrol, diesel rates see significant hike after two-day pause. Check fuel rates

Fuel prices have been on a rise since the early parts of May and petrol rate, in particular, has seen a hike of ₹11.14 per litre over the past several weeks.

Petrol and diesel prices shot up once again on Thursday after staying mute for two days. While petrol became costlier by 35 paise per litre, diesel rates went up by 15 paise after being reduced by 16 paise on Monday. The hike in prices of both fuels come at a time when international crude prices have tumbled by around 2% over possibility of easing of supplies.

Fuel prices have been on a rise since the early parts of May and petrol rate, in particular, has seen a hike of ₹11.14 per litre over the past several weeks. Diesel rates in the same time frame have shot up by ₹9.14.

In Delhi, a litre of petrol is now at ₹101.54 while a litre of diesel is at ₹89.97. Petrol prices now are well and truly north of ₹100 mark in the five metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Of these metropolitan cities, fuel rates are the most expensive in Mumbai where a litre of petrol is now at ₹107.54 while a litre of diesel costs ₹97.45.

In Rajasthan's Ganganagar, a litre of petrol and diesel costs ₹112.90 and ₹103.15, respectively.

The varying prices of petrol and diesel across states is because of the differences in taxes and levies imposed by different state governments. Taxes imposed by the central government, however, also form a bulk of the portion of the final selling price of the two fuels.

While international crude rates also have an impact on the daily price revisions in petrol and diesel prices, many point out that in recent times, this has not been the case and that falling global rates haven't provided much - or any - relief to consumers in India. The central government in recent times has also highlighted the need to fund welfare measures and for this, taxes on fuel are crucial, especially in Covid-19 times.

Toyota buys US mapping, road data firm to bulk up driverless tech

Buying US-based Carmera will give Toyota access to real-time, high-definition maps and crowdsourced inputs that are essential for autonomous vehicles.
Toyota also has other self-driving partnerships, including a joint venture with SoftBank, stakes in China's Didi Global and Singapore's Grab.

Toyota Motor Corp's research arm said on Thursday it acquired US-based Carmera, a provider of maps and data for driverless vehicles, marking the Japanese car maker's latest investment in autonomous technology.

The purchase, through newly created subsidiary Woven Planet for an undisclosed sum, underscores Toyota's push to bulk up its self-driving arsenal as traditional automakers compete with the autonomous ambitions of tech giants including Apple and Amazon.

Buying Carmera will give Toyota access to real-time, high-definition maps and crowdsourced inputs that are essential for autonomous vehicles to locate and navigate themselves, the companies said in a statement.

The two companies have collaborated since 2018 on projects including technology that updates repainted lane markings on high-definition maps with accuracy.

"It's very well aligned with our expansion globally as a company," Woven Planet chief executive James Kuffner told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

Woven Planet was established in January to invest in and develop mobility with artificial intelligence. It is building a prototype "city of the future" called Woven City at the base of Mount Fuji, powered by hydrogen fuel cells that would be a laboratory for autonomous cars.

"With Carmera, we're just accelerating. We'll continue to accelerate ... and look for strategic partnerships or acquisitions," Kuffner said, adding he wanted to "double or quadruple" the size of Woven Planet in the next couple of years via organic growth and acquisitions.

Earlier this year, Toyota bought ride-hailing service Lyft Inc's self-driving technology unit for $550 million, and invested in Ridecell that provides automation for fleet businesses.

The Japanese firm has other self-driving partnerships, including a joint venture with SoftBank Corp, stakes in China's Didi Global Inc and Singapore's Grab, and is forming a consortium with General Motors Co, suppliers and chipmakers.

US urges 50,000 Chevrolet Bolt owners to park EVs outside due to fire risk

The 50,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles belong to 2017-2019 model years and were recalled last year in November for a potential fire risk.
In April this year, General Motors had announced a software update for the Bolt EVs under fire risk.

About 50,000 owners of General Motors' Chevrolet Bolt EVs have been urged by US auto safety regulators to park their vehicles outside and away from homes or other structures post charging as they face risk of catching fire. These Bolt EVs were recalled last year in November.

General Motors also recommended the Bolt owners to not leave their vehicles charging overnight as they have a risk of catching fire if charged to 100%. The recommendation was made after the largest US automaker said it was investigating recent reports of Bolt EVs, that were recalled in November, catching fire.

The 50,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles belong to 2017-2019 model years and were recalled last year for a potential fire risk in the high-voltage battery pack placed underneath the backseat's bottom cushion. The batteries are made by South Korea's LG Chem.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had first opened an investigation into the fire risk of Chevrolet Bolt EVs in October last year and the November recall was conducted after reports of five fires and two minor injuries. The safety agency told Reuters that it "continues to evaluate the information received, and is looking into the latest fires."

In April this year, General Motors had announced a software update for the Bolt EVs under fire risk and informed owners that company dealers would use "diagnostic tools to identify potential battery anomalies and replace battery module assemblies as necessary." The carmaker had also said that it would make the diagnostic software standard in all the 2022 Bolt EVs and other electric utility vehicles as well as in the future GM electric vehicles. It also announced that it would offer the software update for all other Bolt EVs on the road.

However, NHTSA mentioned that Bolt EV owners should park their vehicles outside indefinitely regardless of whether they have had the software update completed.

Samsung unveils its first image sensor for cars, signs $436 million deal with Tesla

Today Samsung unveiled the ISOCELL Auto 4AC, its first image sensor that is tailor-made for cars. It is intended to be used as a reverse camera or (on more advanced systems) to power surround view monitors.

This isn't about image quality and certainly not resolution - instead the focus is on practical things like a high dynamic range (120 dB) and LED flicker mitigation. Both are based on what Samsung calls CornerPixel.

This technology combines two photodiodes per pixel - one 3.0 µm for low-light operation and one 1.0 µm one placed in the corner (hence the name) that will be used for bright environments.

This setup allows the sensor to quickly adjust to changes in the surrounding light, e.g. when exiting a tunnel. It also provides a high dynamic range with little motion blur and reduces the flicker of LED lights. If you're wondering why that is important, consider that many modern headlights on cars as well as street lights have transitioned to LEDs. Anyway, the flicker reduction is achieved by extending the exposure time of the small photodiodes.

The ISOCELL Auto 4AC is a 1/3.7" sensor with 1.3 MP resolution (1,280 x 960). There is an ISP embedded into the sensor. The sensor meets the AEC-Q100 Grade 2 requirements, which include operating in a very wide temperature window of -40ºC to 125ºC (that's -40ºF to 257ºF). Actually, it looks like it covers the stricter Grade 1 if we're reading this PDF correctly.

The 4AC is already in mass production. Note that it is not intended for autonomous driving applications or in-cabin use (e.g. monitoring the driver), Samsung plans to introduce more sensors to cover such use-cases.

Why does any of this matter? Well, The Korea Economic Daily reports that Samsugn Electro-Mechanics has signed a $436 million deal with the "top US EV maker". It's not hard to guess that this means Tesla.

With the 4AC being Samsung's first image sensor for automotive applications, the timing of the announcements is not coincidental. This move will put extra pressure on the current market leader in this segment, Sony.

There's more. While the KED report doesn't name names, there are rumors swirling in the industry that the Tesla/Samsung deal is to supply cameras for the Cybertruck. Once you get past its geometric design, you'll notice that it lacks side mirrors. Instead, it has cameras embedded into the fenders and one under the front bumper. There are probably more cameras dotted around the truck, but Tesla is being secretive with the details for now.

Oppo Reno6 Z images, specs and even price leak before the official unveiling

The Oppo Reno6 Z will be officially unveiled on July 21, the company already has warm-up pages live in several locales (Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam). These flaunt images of the device and confirm a couple of the key specs. In addition, leakster Evan Blass has dug up several images that appear to be from the actual product page.

The warm-up pages freely admit that the phone will be powered by a MediaTek 800U chipset (which we've seen in benchmarks) and that it will support 30W VOOC flash charge. That's the same chipset and charging system as on the Reno5 Z. Also, the 3.5 mm headphone jack will remain in place, next to the USB-C port.

One upgrade we do notice is that the main camera features a 64 MP sensor, up from 48 MP, as per the label on the back. Rumored specs claim that the selfie camera will also get an upgrade (from 16 MP to 32 MP), while the 8 MP ultra wide module and 2 MP macro cam remain the same (the 2 MP depth sensor is gone and it will not be missed).

Some stores in Vietnam are not overly patient and have posted specifications and even the price. Note that such early uploads aren't always 100% fact-checked, so the store listings may have some errors.

That said, the Reno6 Z appears to use the same 6.43" 60 Hz AMOLED display with 1080p+ resolution as its predecessor (20:9). This one supposedly has Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The Dimensity 800U chipset will be paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage.

This is a 5G-enabled dual-SIM device with a microSD slot (another upgrade) and the battery capacity is listed as 4,310 mAh. The cameras are 32 MP on the front and 64 + 8 + 2 MP on the back, as expected, with 4K @ 30 fps video recording.

As for the price, Chun tweeted an image form a store where the Reno6 Z is listed at VND 9,490,000 ($410/€350). There's even a pre-order bonus for the July 14-21 period, suggesting that it will be unveiled tomorrow and that July 21 is the start of sales date.

Google Lens update allows you to analyze photos from your gallery

As 9to5Google reported, the Google Lens app receives an update overhauling the design and the main focus of the app itself. The new design emphasizes on the ability to analyze already saved photos and screenshots rather than analyzing in a live preview.

That's a neat new feature, which is also available to the built-in Lens in default camera apps but you are still encouraged to use the live preview analyzer. Anyway, tapping on the rounded gallery preview button opens up your recently saved photos.

It's interesting to note that screenshot analysis has been available in the Google Photos app for some time now but letting users do all of this in one place, hence the Google Lens app, is much more convenient.

Keep in mind that this is a server-side change so it may take a while before you get the redesigned Google Lens app.

New ZTE Axon 30 live photo reveals improved UD camera

ZTE is expected to bring the Axon 30 this month, and the phone will have an under-display camera, just like the predecessor Axon 20. Ni Fei, President of Mobile Devices at the company already promised a next-gen solution of the technology, and today we saw a leaked live photo, revealing the final product.

The issue with the Axon 20, the first commercial smartphone with an under-display front-facing camera, was the OLED matrix did not allow enough light to go through and Visionox had to compromise with the viewing experience.

We expect ZTE will reveal what exactly was improved at the launch, but our assumptions are there is a combination of OLED improvements and UI fixes.

What we do know is the screen will support a 120 Hz refresh rate and will have 400ppi above the camera - that's twice what ZTE offered in the Axon 20.

The phone has been certified with 55W fast charging, and while we don't know much more, it will likely run on a borderline flagship chipset such as the Snapdragon 870 or Dimensity 1200.

Penalty for cheating. Chinese woman runs 49 red lights in ex-boyfriend's car

A Chinese woman in Zhejiang province of China racked up a speed violation and 49 red light violations with her ex-boyfriend's car.

Running a red light is not something one does deliberately. Still, we make that mistake once or twice in our lives and end up paying a fine for that. But, running 49 red lights deliberately is something enough to stun anyone.

This weird soap opera revenge event recently happened in China. A woman deliberately ran 49 red lights in her ex-boyfriend's car just to rack up the fines after he left her for another woman, claims a report by Global Times. Running red lights in another person's car for revenge purposes is something unusual and wicked at the same time.

As the report states, police in China's Zhejiang province came to know about an Audi breaking traffic laws left and right. The luxury car registered a single-speed violation and 49 red light violations over just two days. Understandably, the police's attention fell on the owner of the Audi, who was the ex-boyfriend of the woman.

However, a police investigation found that the car was being driven by the owner's ex-girlfriend. The woman was identified as Lou. She asked a man called Chen to rent her ex-boyfriend Qian's Audi, as the report stated. Chen gave the car to another man named Zhu, who reportedly used the car with Lou committing traffic crimes for two days continuously.

The report also states that Lou's accomplice Zhu was promised a date with the woman if he joined her in the four-wheeled revenge plot against Qian. Everyone involved ultimately confessed to their role in this event. Eventually, Zhu was arrested along with Lou. However, the report doesn't reveal what ultimately happened to the convicts.

Hero MotoCorp aims to introduce battery as service, vehicle as service and EV charging infrastructure in near future.
Hero MotoCorp says its 200 millionth vehicle might not be a two-wheeler.

India's largest two-wheeler brand Hero MotoCorp is aiming beyond the conventional two-wheeler segment. The homegrown auto company on Monday has said that it is focusing on electric mobility products. It is not only aiming to grab a chunk of the electric personal mobility space.

Pawan Munjal, chairman and CEO of Hero Motocorp, said in the company's annual report for 2020-21 that the brand plans to achieve the next 100 million units sales within this decade. He also said that the company's 200 millionth vehicle may not be a two-wheeler.

This clearly indicates the automaker is focusing on other segments beyond motorcycles and scooters. Talking about electric vehicles, Munjal said the company is working on multiple electric vehicle programmes and platforms. Besides personal mobility, Hero MotoCorp is claimed to be working on modular mobility solutions as well.

Hero MotoCorp's ambition about the premium two-wheeler segment is not new. The company has been aiming to enter the segment for quite a long time. Besides the Indian market, these premium motorcycles and scooters will be sold in other markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Latin America and Africa as well, as Munjal gave hint.
