Scientific Games to hold online Asia summit

Gaming tech company Scientific Games Corporation will hold a customer-only Asia Summit & Virtual Experience event on May 11 and 12, with the main topic of the discussion being how 'navigate their way through today's challenging marketplace' and recovery plans amid the pandemic.

'Delegates will have access to a virtual booth where they can experience 360-degree demos of all the latest products from Scientific Games, with the company's game designers to share details of the latest and upcoming slot releases, including Duo Fu Duo Cai - Hurricane Horse, Jin Ji Bao Xi - Singing Cats, and 123 Wild.

'In these difficult and uncertain times, it's incredibly important to remain connected with one another and remain informed of the latest trends. We remain committed to helping our customers drive their recovery and with several new product developments to unveil and industry topics to analyze, we're looking forward to the Summit and engaging with both new and existing customers,' SG Gaming Business Unit CEO, Matt Wilson, stated in the announcement.

In 2020 SG generated some US$2.7 billion in consolidated revenue compared to US$3.4 billion in the prior year after its gaming business was impacted by COVID-19 disruptions, reporting some US$548 million in net losses.

The group is currently considering an Australian initial public offering and sharemarket listing, which could help raise fresh funds and pay down debt.

Major board gaming awards are now recognizing the best 'Zoomable' games

The 15th annual Golden Geek Awards were announced on Sunday, and they include an entirely new category for tabletop games you can play on a video conference, such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams. It's further evidence that the ongoing global pandemic is changing the way we play, and that will undoubtedly feed back into how games are made going forward.

The Golden Geeks are organized each year by the community at Board Game Geek, perhaps the largest collection of tabletop fans in the world. This list of awards was very different than previous years, especially since there was no single winner for Board Game of the Year. Instead, the decision was made to break that honor up into three different categories -- Light, Medium, and Heavy. It's a move mirrored by The American Tabletop Awards. We've included a list of all the winners below.

But the biggest change by far was the addition of the Zoomable Game category. The winner was Forgotten Waters, a game designed by Isaac Vega, J. Arthur Ellis, and Mr. Bistro. It was published by Plaid Hat Games, and is closely related to another of that company's award winning games called Dead of Winter.

Zynga Buys Chartboost To Drive Online Ads, Reports Record Quarterly Revenue

Mobile game publisher Zynga ZNGA +5.6% said it would buy mobile ad and monetization platform Chartboost for $250 million in a bid to diversify its revenue base amid major changes in Apple AAPL +1.5% ad rules. The company also reported record first quarter revenues and bookings, and raised its full-year guidance.

In a letter to investors, the company called the Chartboost deal a "transformational acquisition" for the company, whose prominent titles include Words With Friends, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, and Empires & Puzzles. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter, pending regulatory approvals.

"The combination of Chartboost's scale and ad tech capabilities with Zynga's high-quality games portfolio and first-party data will meaningfully enhance Zynga's competitive advantage in the mobile ecosystem," the company's latest investor letter says. "Over the coming years, we are confident in our ability to increase our total addressable market while driving strong topline growth and margin expansion as we continue to execute on our growth initiatives."

The deal will expand Zynga's ad network to 700 million people, a big jump from its current Monthly Active Users network of 164 million, the company said. It will also help the company navigate expected big changes in the mobile ad space precipitated by Apple's IDFA policy changes affecting tracking and ad targeting.

"Not only are we investing in our mobile advertising ecosystem in the way we generate revenue," said Bernard Kim, the company's president of publishing. "Also what Chartboost will do is change the way we bring players into our network, the way we monetize players."
